RCN Calls to Latinos

RCN launched an international calling plan aimed at Spanish-speaking customers -- MiTeléfono -- with long-distance rates ranging from 4-89 cents per minute to Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Cuba and 21 Latin American and South American countries.

The cable-system overbuilder said it will waive MiTeléfono’s $2.95 monthly charge for subscribers to its complete 30-channel tier of Hispanic programming, MiVisión, or the Paquete de Variedades (“Variety Package”) bundle.

MiTeléfono will be available in all of RCN’s markets except San Francisco and Los Angeles. RCN spokesman Michael Houghton said the company is not introducing the service in California because it is in the process of selling its San Francisco assets to Astound Broadband and because the sale of the Los Angeles system is still pending.

Calling rates under the MiTeléfono plan start at 4 cents per minute to Puerto Rico and Spain, ranging up to 32 cents per minute to Guyana and Honduras and 89 cents to Cuba.

“RCN has been very active in creating new offerings for our Spanish-speaking customers, beginning with the introduction of our themed a la carte cable TV programming package, MiVisión,” RCN vice president of marketing and product development Mark Chinn said in statement. “MiTeléfono was specifically designed to expand Hispanic consumer’s choice in selecting a phone product targeted to their needs.”
