Portugal's ZON Debuts NDS 'Snowflake' Guide

ZON TV, the largest cable operator in Portugal, has launched its next-generation interactive program guide based on NDS's Snowflake user interface and powered by the vendor's MediaHighway set-top box software.

The operator is using the IPG for its new IRIS service aimed at high-end subscribers, which provides access to a services including VOD, "catch-up TV," interactive widgets, DVR features and content recommendations.

"By placing the user at the heart of the TV experience we feel we've been able to offer a truly next-generation product that builds on TV's heritage as a shared experience, with simple, elegant navigation that redefines it for the internet generation," ZON head of TV products Nuno Sanches said in a statement.

ZON is the first operator to launch the NDS Snowflake UI. Liberty Global is developing a next-generation home media gateway that also uses Snowflake, slated for rollout in the second half of 2011.

NDS Snowflake was designed by Paris-based NDS Studio Design, which ZON also engaged for branding consultancy across the platform including advertising and point of sale design.

ZON Multimedia, based in Lisbon, has 1.6 million video, 666,000 broadband and 732,000 fixed-line customers.
