IFC Adds Two Seasons of 'Documentary Now'

IFC has renewed its upcoming Documentary Now! for two more seasons ahead of its  Aug. 20 series premiere.

The network also said it is expanding the season-one finale into a two-parter, adding a seventh episode to the initial six-season order.

Documentary Now! parodies the canon of essential docus and the filmmakers behind them, with Dame Helen Mirren playing host. IFC posted an OTT preview of episode two -- "Dronez: The Hunt for El Chingon," starring Jack Black -- on Aug. 10 on Vice.com, IFC.com, YouTube, Dish channel 102 and IFC’s TV-everywhere extensions. It generated more than 250,000 views within the first week. (Read Kent Gibbons' review.)

"[We're] thrilled with the buzz and critical acclaim the show is already receiving,” Jennifer Caserta, IFC president, said, adding that IFC's first renewal of a series before its premiere is a "huge nod" to series creators and executive producers Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, Seth Meyers and Rhys Thomas. “We’re immensely proud of what they’ve created."

The second-episode OTT preview will be available through August 27. The first episode premieres on IFC Thursday at 10 p.m.
