Hawaiian Tel Picks Alcatel-Lucent for IPTV

The Aloha State’s incumbent phone company, Hawaiian Telcom Communications, picked Alcatel-Lucent’s Triple Play Service Delivery Architecture to launch Internet-protocol-TV services, in addition to new voice and Internet products.

Hawaiian Tel, which provides more than 645,000 local access lines, will deploy Alcatel-Lucent’s access and IP-routing solutions to replace high-speed-Internet network infrastructure. The new equipment will provide the speeds necessary to deliver IPTV and other services, the companies said in a Thursday announcement.

“The deployment of Alcatel-Lucent’s Triple Play Service Delivery Architecture is a significant element of our ongoing network-transformation strategy to IP-based technologies,” Hawaiian Tel chief marketing officer Michael McHale said in a prepared statement.

Privately held Hawaiian Tel was spun off from Verizon Communications in 2005.

Alcatel-Lucent will provide Hawaiian Tel with the Alcatel 7330 ISAM fiber-to-the-node and the Alcatel 7342 ISAM Gigabit passive optical network (GPON) fiber-to-the-premises platforms, as well as Ethernet routers and switches.

Hawaii’s incumbent cable operator is Oceanic Time Warner of Hawaii, a division of Time Warner Cable.
