Harmonic Debuts Standard-Definition Encoder

Harmonic introduced its DiviCom Electra 5400 third-generation MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) standard-definition encoder Monday.

The vendor said the 5400 delivers up to four full-resolution standard-definition channels in a one-rack-unit package, as well as simultaneous low-resolution content for picture-in-picture, mobile-video services or other applications, making it ideal for large deployments of Internet-protocol TV, direct-broadcast satellite and Digital Video Broadcast terrestrial services.

“Using IP-based technology in the network gives video-service providers much greater flexibility and scalability," Harmonic product-line manager for standard-definition encoders Tom Lattie said in a prepared statement.
