Gates a Surprise Stand In for mtvU

mtvU’s Stand In opened some “Windows” at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Microsoft Corp. chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates paid a surprise visit to the school’s “Introduction to Programming” class to serve as substitute professor for the day, and MTV Networks’ 24-hour college network was there to capture it.

The Stand In episode with Gates will debut on mtvU Über (www.mtvu.com) via broadband Tuesday, Oct. 25, airing the following day on the linear network.

The network said Gates led the class in a discussion about leading-edge technologies and their potential to change the way people live and work. He also discussed the vitality of the computer-science industry and the careers within it.

“The next Bill Gates is in college right now, reinventing the world as we know it," mtvU general manager Stephen Friedman said in a prepared statement. “It's incredible to be able to bring one of the greatest entrepreneurs of our time face-to-face with our audience, the next generation of digital pioneers.”

Other Stand In guests have included Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.); Global YouthAIDS Ambassador and actress Ashley Judd; Basketball Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar; music mogul Russell Simmons and Reverend Run; Nas and his father, Olu Dara; Snoop Dogg; Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.); Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt; and The Rev. Jesse Jackson.
