Gates a Surprise Stand In for mtvU

mtvU’s Stand In opened some “Windows” at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Microsoft Corp. chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates paid a surprise visit to the school’s “Introduction to Programming” class to serve as substitute professor for the day, and MTV Networks’ 24-hour college network was there to capture it.

The Stand In episode with Gates will debut on mtvU Über ( via broadband Tuesday, Oct. 25, airing the following day on the linear network.

The network said Gates led the class in a discussion about leading-edge technologies and their potential to change the way people live and work. He also discussed the vitality of the computer-science industry and the careers within it.

“The next Bill Gates is in college right now, reinventing the world as we know it," mtvU general manager Stephen Friedman said in a prepared statement. “It's incredible to be able to bring one of the greatest entrepreneurs of our time face-to-face with our audience, the next generation of digital pioneers.”

Other Stand In guests have included Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.); Global YouthAIDS Ambassador and actress Ashley Judd; Basketball Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar; music mogul Russell Simmons and Reverend Run; Nas and his father, Olu Dara; Snoop Dogg; Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.); Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt; and The Rev. Jesse Jackson.
