Disney+ Won't Be Available on Amazon Fire TV at Launch

The Walt Disney Company says that its new streaming platform, Disney+, will launch on November 12 in every major OTT ecosystem. But Amazon Fire TV didn't make the list of platforms the Disney+ app will be launching on.

Update: Disney didn't comment for MCN. But an individual close to the company said it would be "misleading" to indicate that a deal won't be carved out with Amazon before November 12.

Amazon said over the spring that it now has 34 million active users around the world. A number of research firms peg Roku’s distribution as being higher, but the company said it has 30.5 million active users during its second-quarter earnings call earlier this month.

In any event, suffice it to say that Amazon Fire TV and Roku control the lion’s share of the OTT player market. And if Disney’s ambition is to challenge Netflix for global subscription-based streaming supremacy, this will be an issue.

In a press release issued Monday, Disney said that Disney+ will launch in the U.S., Canada and Netherlands on November 12, and in Australia and New Zealand a week later. Disney expects to proliferate the platform across most global markets over the next two years.

In addition to Roku players and enabled smart TVs, Disney+ will have apps that support the following platforms”

> Apple’s iOS devices (iPhone, iPad and iPod) and Apple TV

> Google Chromecast and Android TV

> Sony PlayStation 4 and Android TV-based smart TVs

> Microsoft Xbox One
