Cox Rates Rising in Rhode Island

Cox Communications Inc. said it will raise rates for its standard service in Rhode Island by 4.8%, or $1.96 per month, to $42.95, AP reported.

Basic-service rates will remain unchanged, and the MSO said it will cut charges for subscribers with multiple digital-cable boxes by $2 per month to $1.95 for each extra box, according to AP.

Cox serves 97% of the state’s cable subscribers. The operator has not raised its rates in Rhode Island since 2002, AP reported.

“Our programming costs have increased by 21% since 2002, and the cost for sports programming alone has increased by 41%,” Cox New England vice president and region manager Paul Cronin told AP. “We simply are unable to continue absorbing all of these increased costs.”
