Cox Proffers Free Security Software, Backup For Broadband Subs

Cox Communications, looking to further differentiate its broadband services from telco competitors', is providing high-speed Internet subscribers security software and online backup for no additional charge.

The operator is providing a free download of Cox Security Suite Plus Powered By McAfee, which provides antivirus, anti-spam, anti-spyware, anti-phishing, and email and instant message protection features, as well as SiteAdvisor Plus website rating on up to five PCs or Macs.

Cox users also can download McAfee Family Protection, which lets parents block access to certain websites, social networks and other online threats; manage the amount of time children spend online; and block specific online TV shows, movies, songs with explicit lyrics in iTunes and "objectionable" YouTube videos.

The Cox Secure Online Backup service, provided through Broomfield, Colo.-based Digi-Data, provides a "virtual drive" for customers to backup files and also share them with friends. Storage amounts included are free and varies by tier: Starter and Essential customers receive 1 Gigabyte; Preferred, 5 GB; Premier, 50 GB; and Ultimate, unlimited. The MSO noted it offers DOCSIS 3.0-based services across its entire footprint.

"In addition to award-winning speed and service, Cox offers robust features that provide exceptional value and convenience and help ensure a positive and safe online experience," Cox vice president of voice and data product management and development Philip Nutsugah said in a statement.

According to the operator, some older Internet packages -- such as the Value and Economy tiers -- may not have access to online backup.

Cox customers can activate the features and configure settings on the operator's website. In addition to the new security and backup features, Cox provides online resources through its Take Charge! initiative to educate parents, caregivers and teens about Internet safety.
