CNN Sets New 'Black In America' Documentary

The issue of racial identity within the African-American community will be the focus of a Dec. 9 CNN Black In America documentary, according to network officials.

Hosted by Soledad O’Brien, Who is Black in America? -- the fifth installment of CNN”s Black In America documentary franchise -- will examine how much race and identity are personal choices versus reflections of what society thinks and believes.

The documentary features 2010 U.S. Census findings showing that 15% of new marriages are interracial, which is twice what was reported in 1980. Also, one in seven American newborns was of mixed race in 2010, representing an increase of 2% from the 2000 U.S. Census, according to the network.

CNN will continue the Who is Black in America? discussion online by featuring iReports, news stories, and opinion pieces on what racial identity means today from a variety of perspectives, said the network.
