Canoe Hires Former HBO General Counsel Redpath

Canoe Ventures, the advanced-advertising joint venture of the six largest U.S. cable operators, appointed John Redpath as senior vice president and general counsel.

Redpath, who started at Canoe on Jan. 25, will report to Canoe CEO David Verklin.

Redpath replaces Michael Davis in the general counsel role; Davis will become the deputy general counsel. Davis previously worked at CableLabs, where he was responsible for legal and business counseling on several development projects, including advanced advertising and Tru2Way interactive TV technology.

"We're pleased that John is joining Canoe's executive team," Verklin said in a statement. "John brings a wealth of experience and relationships that are critical to Canoe as we introduce new products, drive collaboration and roll out innovative technologies into the television ecosystem."

Redpath most recently was chief legal officer at the U.S. Golf Association. He previously spent 25 years at Time Warner Inc.'s HBO in various roles, including general counsel, before leaving in 2003 to become Time Inc.'s general counsel.

Canoe, after expecting to debut interactive ads before the end of 2009 and scrapping a targeted-advertising service, has said it is on track to launch a request for information (RFI) product sometime this spring.
