TiVo has landed yet another cable operator customer, signing a deal with Cable One to provide DVR software and multiscreen-video applications to the 10th-largest MSO in the U.S.
Cable One, owned by the Washington Post Co., plans to begin rolling out its TiVo offering in the first half of 2013. The MSO has about 600,000 video customers across 19 states.
With the Cable One deal, TiVo has secured deals or partnerships with 10 of the top 20 U.S. cable operators.
TiVo’s MSO customers include Charter Communications, Suddenlink Communications, Mediacom Communications, RCN, GCI, Grande Communications and Midcontinent Communications. In addition, Comcast and Cox Communications have agreements with TiVo to provide VOD to subscribers with retail TiVo DVRs.
As in its deals with other tier 2 operators, TiVo will be the exclusive provider of software for new DVRs deployed by Cable One.
Cable One expects to deploy multiple TiVo products, including the company’s four-tuner DVR, the TiVo Mini IP set-top box and the TiVo Stream device for delivering video to tablets and smartphones. The MSO intends to provide the TiVo interactive guide to subscribers as well as integrated search capability across linear TV, recorded programming, VOD and broadband-delivered video.
"The way our subscribers consume video entertainment is rapidly changing and we focused on a solution that will put an extensive amount of content choice right at the viewers' fingertips in a way that is easy to find and watch -- on any screen," Jerry McKenna, Cable One’s senior vice president and chief sales and marketing officer, said in a statement.
TiVo brings "a cost-effective and market-tested offering that immediately gives our subscribers access to the best TV experience on any screen in the home," McKenna added. TiVo's multiplatform solution will let Cable One use existing QAM linear video distribution coupled with next-generation IP video-on-demand, he said.
TiVo is scheduled to report results for its fiscal third quarter ended Oct. 31, 2012, after market close Wednesday.
For the quarter ended July 31, TiVo added 230,000 net subscribers -- the company's fourth consecutive quarter of positive subscriber growth, again driven by gains at U.K. cable operator Virgin Media, which surpassed 1 million TiVo subscribers in July. TiVo-owned subscribers declined in the period by 23,000, to 1.06 million, while operator subs increased 253,000, to 1.66 million.
Separately, TiVo has won large settlements against pay-TV operators in the past year, including Dish Network, AT&T and most recently Verizon Communications. TiVo currently has litigation pending against Time Warner Cable.
