Avgiris Upped At Comcast

Comcast has promoted Cathy Avgiris to senior vice president and general manager of communications and data services, responsible for aspects of the operator's newly rebranded Xfinity Internet and Voice services as well as the WiMax wireless data service.

Mitch Bowling, formerly senior vice president and general manager of Comcast Online Service, now serves as senior vice president and general manager of new businesses for Comcast Cable, overseeing "the identification and development of new business opportunities."

The executive changes took effect earlier in 2010.

Avgiris -- a member of Multichannel News' 2007 Wonder Women class -- was named head of Comcast's voice operations in 2005 and added wireless to her duties last year when the operator launched High-Speed 2Go service through its investment in Clearwire.

From 2000 to 2005, she served as senior vice president of finance for Comcast Cable, in charge of all financial and operations activities for the online and voice businesses.

"Cathy has done a tremendous job growing our voice business and launching our 4G wireless data service," Comcast Cable executive vice president David Juliano said in a statement. "Under her leadership, Comcast became the third-largest residential phone services provider in the U.S. in less than four years and I'm confident that Cathy's management expertise will enable us to continue to innovate and grow these other businesses, especially in light of our recent Xfinity launch."

Avgiris, who has a bachelor's degree in accounting from New York's Baruch College and is a certified public accountant, is a member of the Forum for Executive Women and has served in leadership roles with WICT Philadelphia.
