While it may be turning down the volume a bit on expensive action movies, Netflix is maintaining the star wattage when it comes to new TV series. 

On Wednesday, the streaming giant announced that Will Ferrell will co-create and star in a new comedy about a fictional golf legend, titled Golf. 

Netflix said it has placed a 10-episode order for the show, which doesn't yet have a drop date.

Ramy Youssef and Josh Rabinowitz will serve as co-creators, executive producers and showrunners of Ferrell's first TV comedy, with Youssef also appearing in front of the camera. 

Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum and Alix Taylor are executive producers for Gloria Sanchez Productions.

Netflix’s announcement Wednesday didn’t include a logline for the show, but IMDB describes the project’s story as revolving around “a professional golfer as he becomes the face of a new controversial league.”

Ferrell has long been established as one of the more reliable box office draws in cinematic comedy. But outside of the show that brought him to fame, Saturday Night Live, he has largely eschewed TV comedy. 

Apple TV Plus offers a new twist on the holiday movie classic A Christmas Carol with its upcoming musical comedy Spirited, debuting on the streaming service November 18.

The movie, which stars Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds and Octavia Spencer, retells the classic Charles Dickens tale from the perspective of the three ghosts, according to Apple TV Plus.

The musical follows the Ghost of Christmas Present (Ferrell) who, on Christmas Eve, seeks out one dark soul to be reformed by a visit from three spirits. But the chosen Scrooge (Reynolds) turns the tables on Christmas Present, who finds himself reexamining his own past, present and future, according to the streaming service.

Spirited is directed by Sean Anders, and written by Anders and John Morris.■

AMC Networks said it has taken a majority stake in Levity Live, the owner of several live comedy venues across the country, operating under brands like Copper Blues, Levity Live and the recently acquired The Improv.

Levity Live also operates a talent management arm and has a proven track record in television production, including prime-time specials with big-name comics like Trevor Noah, Tracy Morgan, Margaret Cho, Sebastian Maniscalco and Gad Elmaleh.

In a statement, AMC said it sees the partnership as an opportunity to bring together its IFC alternative comedy brand – home to quirky hits like Documentary Now! and Brockmire – with Levity’s venues to "create a multi-dimensional and fan-focused experiential comedy platform that can encompass live and televised comedy, digital extensions, and the development of new content formats, talent and IP." The move follows AMC's November 2016 minority investment in Funny or Die, the digital comedy hub and production studio created by comedians and film producers Will Ferrell and Adam McKay that reaches more than 60 million people globally. 

“In an era of continuing disruption to old models, IFC now has format, IP ownership and talent opportunities that are best-in-class across live, digital and linear TV,” said IFC president Jennifer Caserta in a statement. “Just as our recent investment in Funny or Die allowed IFC to expand in the digital comedy space and explore new forms of content creation, this partnership with Levity Live connects our leading comedy brand with live venues across the country, opening up a world of new fan-focused and experiential opportunities as well as enhancing our ability to identify and cultivate emerging talent. Through this strategic partnership, we can further bring the IFC brand to life by forging direct, real-world connections with fans across TV, digital and now, live events.”

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Hulu has picked up a new politically-themed series starring comedian Sarah Silverman, the OTT service announced Monday.

The Funny Or Die-produced series, I Love You, America, stars Silverman discussing the current political/emotional landscape of the country. According to Hulu, Silverman will look to “connect with people who may not agree with her personal opinions through honesty, humor, genuine interest in others, and not taking herself too seriously.”

Silverman will serve as executive producer of the series along with Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Amy Zvi.

HBO will air an Amy Schumer stand-up comedy special in October, one of several specials the network announced during its Television Critics Association tour session Thursday.

Amy Schumer: Live From Apollo, directed by Chris Rock, will debut Oct. 17, said HBO president Michael Lombardo during the session.

The network will also launch a Sept. 12 special featuring Will Ferrell dubbed Ferrell Takes The Field, in which the comedian visits five baseball fields during spring training. The special, in which Ferrell plays every position on baseball field for ten different teams in the same day, was dedicated to fight against cancer, said the network.

The network will also air a U2 documentary and concert performance over two consecutive weeks in November, Lombardo said.

Showtime has reached an exclusive output deal with recently created film, television and multimedia studio STX Entertainment, the network said Tuesday.

The deal, which begins this year, gives Showtime rights to air the studio’s theatrical releases through 2019, said network officials. The movies will air on Showtime Networks and its multiplex channels including The Movie Channel and Flix.

The first four features from STX Entertainment include projects from  Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit),  Billy Ray (Captain Phillips, The Hunger Games),  Mark Johnson (Rain Man, Breaking Bad) and Jason Blum (Whiplash) and will star Matthew McConaughey, Julia Roberts Nicole Kidman, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Will Ferrell and Jason Bateman among others.
