UPtv, which offers uplifting programming that often touches on faith, kicks off its “Bring the Spring” stunt March 19 with movie God Bless the Broken Road. It tells the story of a young mother who loses her husband in Afghanistan, and gets by on faith, family and friends. Lindsay Pulsipher and Makenzie Moss star. 

Documentary I Go to the Rock: The Gospel Music of Whitney Houston premieres Friday, March 24. The film, hosted by singer CeCe Winans, focuses on Houston’s faith and love of gospel music. Barry Jennings produces. “The documentary will take viewers on a journey from her first-ever performance in front of an audience to her many breathtaking appearances performing gospel songs through 1996’s The Preacher's Wife soundtrack, the best-selling gospel album of all time,” according to UPtv. 

Houston died in 2012. 

Easter is the centerpiece of Bring the Spring.

Other Bring the Spring projects include The Confession Musical on Sunday, March 26. Based on the book series The Heritage of Lancaster County by Beverly Lewis, The Confession Musical features performances by Chonda Pierce and John Schneider and the story of two worlds colliding as a young Amish woman seeks to find her birth mother. 

Season two of drama The Chosen starts as part of a marathon Sunday, April 2, which goes on from 2 to 11 p.m. ET. Dallas Jenkins directs this project, about the life and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth. “Primarily set in Judaea and Galilee in the 1st century, the series centers on Jesus and the different people who met and followed him,” said UP. 

Jonathan Roumie plays Jesus.  

Movie Southern Gospel premieres Easter Sunday. It tells the story of a rock star's life that comes crashing down, and he must fight his demons to realize his childhood ambition of becoming a preacher. Southern Gospel stars Max Erich and Katelyn Nacon. ■

R&B singer Bobby Brown will be the subject of two A&E-based programming events debuting in May.

Brown, a member of the musical group New Edition and ex-husband of the late Whitney Houston, will be chronicled in a two-night, A&E documentary series Biography: Bobby Brown, debuting May 30. The documentary will offer an up-close and personal look at Brown’s journey to stardom and the fallout from his personal struggles with sobriety and the tragic deaths of Houston and two of his children, A&E said. 

Biography: Bobby Brown will feature interviews with such music personalities as Usher, Jermaine Dupri, Keith Sweat, Babyface and New Edition’s Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe and Johnny Gill, as well as his family and  friends, according to the network.

On May 31, A&E will debut Bobby Brown: Every Little Step, a 12-part docuseries which will follow Brown as he focuses on new business ventures while performing with New Edition during the group’s 2022 reunion tour, said A&E representatives.

Brown was the subject of 2005 Bravo reality series Being Bobby Brown, as well as a 2018 BET scripted movie, The Bobby Brown Story. ■ 

ABC debuts the summer series Superstar, focused on “the mavericks who shaped American culture,” in the network’s words, Aug. 11. Whitney Houston is the topic of the premiere episode. Kobe Bryant and Robin Williams will follow. 

There will be four episodes. Superstar comes from the producers of 20/20 and Truth and Lies. The episodes last for an hour and run in the 10 p.m. ET slot. They shift to Hulu the day after their premiere. 

“The series travels deep inside the lives of these icons and features interviews with friends and family who reveal the meteoric highs and the devastating costs of fame,” said ABC. 

Superstar: Whitney Houston features new interviews with musicians Brandy, Chaka Khan, BeBe Winans and Darlene Love; Narada Michael Walden, musician and producer; Michael Bearden, musical director; and Savion Glover, dancer and choreographer. It also includes interviews with Houston and Bobby Brown from the ABC News archives.

“It is exciting to watch the legacy 20/20 brand expand, first with Truth and Lies and now with the Superstar series,” said David Sloan, senior executive producer, ABC primetime content. “Our talented team uses the skills they’ve honed from producing two-hour 20/20 programs to provide unmatched reporting and fresh insight into these icons.”

Sloan is senior executive producer on Superstar and Muriel Pearson is executive producer.

David Muir and Amy Robach host 20/20. Season 44 premieres Oct. 8. 

Truth and Lies premiered in 2017 and has focused on the Menendez brothers, Charles Manson and Tonya Harding, among other crime stories. 

 Netflix’s original movie Malcolm & Marie and Prime Video’s sci-fi drama Bliss highlight an otherwise light schedule of show debuts heading into Super Bowl weekend.

The Feb. 5 debut of Malcolm & Marie showcases John David Washington and Zendaya as a couple who learn more about their relationship one evening after attending a party. 

Bliss also premieres Feb. 5 and follows Owen Wilson as he struggles to determine what is real and what is imaginary in his mind after meeting a stranger played by Selma Hayek.

AXS TV in October will profiles the lives and deaths of some of music’s most influential artists as part of a new series, The Day The Rock Star Died.

The 15-part series, which debuts Oct. 2, examines such artists as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley and Whitney Houston, with a focus on what made these artists so incredible and what makes their art so enduring, said network officials.

The series will precede the return of AXS’ news/interview series The Big Interview with veteran journalist Dan Rather.

“AXS TV is dedicated to providing viewers with the absolute best in classic rock programming, and we are proud to expand our growing roster of quality music-themed programming even further with the addition of The Day The Rock Star Died,” said Lucia McCalmont, vice president of program acquisitions and scheduling, AXS TV in a statement. 

TV One has set an Oct. 8 date for the premiere of its original movie Bobbi Kristina, the network announced Monday.

The biopic, which focuses on the life and tragic death of the troubled daughter of music stars Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown, stars Demetria McKinney (House of Payne, Saints and Sinners), Nadji Jeter (Grown Ups, Last Man Standing), Hassan Johnson (The Wire, E.R.), and Vivica A. Fox (Empire, Kill Bill).

Bobbi Kristina is directed by Ty Hodges and executive produced by Tracey Baker Simmons and Wanda Shelley, according to TV One. 

“The tabloids painted a picture of two superstars who lived a tumultuous life, but we often forget that in the process a little girl had to grow up in a limelight that she did not choose,” D’Angela Proctor, TV One Head of Original Programming & Production said in a statement. “In its simplest form, Bobbi Kristina is a story about a beautiful mother-daughter relationship intertwined with both of their desires to be loved; one just happened to be a superstar and the other an innocent bystander to her parents’ fame.”

Lifetime viewers couldn’t get enough of iconic performer Whitney Houston Saturday night. 

The female-targeted network’s original movie Whitney drew 4.5 million viewers, part of a prime-time block of Whitney Houston-themed programming that garnered a combined 11.8 million viewers.

The original movie, directed by Angela Bassett and starring Yaya DaCosta, was the network’s most-watched telecast across all key demographics since Flowers In The Attic last January, said the network. The movie, which chronicled the relationship betewen the late Houston and singer/writer Bobby Brown, also averaged 2.2 million Adults 25-54, 2.1 million Adults 18-49, 1.6 million Women 18-49 and 1.6 million Women 25-54.

Following the movie, the network’s Bobby Brown: Remembering Whitney special delivered 4.1 million viewers, as well as 1.9 million Adults 25-54, 1.8 million Adults 18-49, 1.4 million Women 18-49 and 1.4 million Women 25-54, according to the network.

At 11:00pm, the special Whitney Houston Live: Her Greatest Performances brought in an additional 3.2 million total viewers, said Lifetime.

Tonight Lifetime will encore the entire Whitney Houston-themed block beginning at 8 p.m. with the movie Whitney.

Lifetime will air iconic performer Whitney Houston’s greatest performances as part of its Saturday night lineup dedicated the late singer/actress.

Whitney Houston Live: Her Greatest Performances will feature several of Houston’s famous television and concert performances, including her first national television appearance at 19 years old in 1983 on The Merv Griffin Show, and her rendition of I Will Always Love You from the 1994 Concert For A New South Africa, said network officials.

The special will follow Lifetime’s airings of previously announced special Bobby Brown: Remembering Whitney and its original movie Whitney.

Lifetime this Saturday will air a special featuring singer/songwriter Bobby Brown immediately after the premiere of its original movie Whitney.

The special, Bobby Brown: Remembering Whitney will feature an interview between Access Hollywood correspondent Shaun Robinson and Houston's ex-husband Brown about his marriage to the late entertainer, the network said.

The special will air at 10 p.m., immediately following Lifetime’s original movie Whitney, which chronicles Houston and Brown’s relationship. Yaya DaCosta, (Lee Daniels’ The Butler) and Arlen Escarpeta (Final Destination 5) star in the movie, directed by Angela Bassett.
