                                <p>MTV’s <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/vmas-salute-taylor-swift-shakira-50-years-of-hip-hop">2023 Video Music Awards </a>generated 1.82 billion total minutes consumed, the most ever, up 14.5% from last year.</p><p>MTV and parent company Paramount Global simulcast the VMAs across 13 networks Tuesday night to maximize viewing.</p><p>The telecast drew 3.92 million total viewers across the night and registered increases in all demos, including a 54% increase among young people 18 to 34. </p><p>The VMAs were also streaming on Paramount Plus starting Wednesday. Those viewers are not included in these figures.</p><p>On MTV alone, the VMA’s ratings were the highest since 2019 among people 18 to 34, up 118% from last year. Among all viewers, MTV was up 37%.</p><p>The VMAs generated 45 million social media interactions, according to SCR. That made it the  No.1 entertainment show in the U.S. for the past year.</p><p>The 2023 VMA were televised live from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. and <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/nicki-minaj-returns-to-vmas-as-emcee-and-performer">hosted by Nicki Minaj</a>, who also performed. Highlights included <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/taylor-swift-leads-with-eight-vma-nominations">Taylor Swift accepting nine awards</a> and a reunion of boy band Nsync.</p>

                                <p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/sean-diddy-combs">Sean “Diddy” Combs</a>, the hip-hop pioneer and media mogul, will receive the Global Icon Award during the<em> </em>2023 <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/video-music-awards"><em>MTV Video Music Awards</em></a><em>,</em> appearing live on September 12.</p><p>Diddy will also perform during the telecast and is nominated for four other awards, including Best Collaboration, Best Rap and Best R&B.</p><p>In 1997, Diddy made his first <em>VMA </em>appearance, performing <em>Mo’ Money Mo Problems. </em>He hosted the awards show from Miami in 2005.</p><p>The <em>VMAs </em>will appear live from Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Center on September 12 at 8 p.m. ET.</p><p>Scheduled to perform are Anitta, Demi Lovato, Doja Cat, Karol G, Kelsea Ballerini, Lil Wayne, Moneskin, Shakira, Stray Kids and Tomorrow X Together.</p><p>Shakira will also receive the Video Vanguard Award, presented by Toyota.</p><p>Official sponsors include Bacardi Rum, Burger King, Clearblue, Descovy, Doritos, Heinz, M&M’s, Swiffer and Toyota Motor North America.</p>

                                <p>Shakira will receive the Video Vanguard Award from MTV during the <em>2023 Video Music Awards,</em> the channel said.</p><p>The singer will also perform live at the VMAs on Sept. 12 for the first time in 17 years. </p><p>Shakira won her first VMA in 2000 and has since won three more Moonman trophies. This year, she has been nominated four times.</p><p>She made her debut as a VMA performer in 2002, belly dancing to her hit <em>Objection (Tango).</em></p><p>In the past, The Video Vanguard Award has been awarded to stars including Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna and Justin Timberlake. The Beatles and director Richard Lester were honored at the first-ever VMAs in 1984.</p><p>The Video Vanguard is sponsored by Toyota. In the previous four years, the automaker has sponsored the Toyota Stage.</p><p>“Toyota has collaborated with the MTV <em>VMAs </em>to bring five years of groundbreaking and memorable performances to the show,” said Jessamine Merrill, general manager, media and digital engagement, Toyota Motor North America. “This year is no different with the first-ever automotive sponsorship of the Video Vanguard Award presented by Toyota to recognize and celebrate Latin icon and global superstar Shakira.”</p><p>The Paramount Brand Studio has created music-centric content with Toyota to mark the tribute to Shakira. The content will debut in the <em>VMAs</em>.                                 <p>MTV revealed the list of nominees for the 2023 <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/mtv-sees-higher-viewership-for-2022-video-music-awards"><em>Video Music Awards</em></a>, with Taylor Swift leading with nominations for eight awards.</p><p>The <em>VMAs </em>will take place September 12  at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, and Swift, who already has 14 VMAs in her trophy case, could raise that total.</p><p>Swift&apos;s nominations include the Video of the Year award, which is presented by Burger King. She won Video of the Year last year.</p><p>Other artists receiving multiple nominations include  SZA (six), Doja Cat, Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo and Sam Smith (five each), and Blackpink, <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/sean-diddy-combs">Diddy</a> and Shakira (four each). </p><p>Fans can vote to determine the winner in 15 gender-neutral categories including Video of the Year and Artist of the Year, plus a new category Best Afrobeats. Voting takes place at vote.mtv.com.</p><p>Nominations for social categories including Group of the Year and Song of Summer will be announced at a later date.</p><p>Official sponsors of the 2023 VMAs include Bacardi Rum, Burger King, Clearblue, Descovy, Doritos, Heinz, M&M’s, Swiffer and Toyota Motor North America.</p><p>Bruce Gillmer and Den of Thieves co-founder Jesse Ignjatovic are executive producers for the <em>2023 VMAs</em>. CBS’ <em>Big Brother</em>. HBO’s <em>Insecure</em> and Showtime’s <em>Twin Peaks: The Return</em> rounded out the top five most social entertainment shows for the day.</p><p>NBC’s San Francisco 49ers-Minnesota Vikings NFL pre-season football telecast was drew the most social media interactions for a live sports telecast on Sunday, according to Nielsen.</p>
