OWN’s original documentary series Black Love on Saturday (August 27) will end its sixth and final season of chronicling the relationships and lives of celebrity and everyday couples. 

Created by married filmmakers Codie and Tommy Oliver, The NAACP Image Awards-nominated series over its run has featured the intimate stories of marriage and love from some of America’s favorite Black couples, including Sterling K. Brown and Ryan Michelle Bathe, Grant Hill and Tamia, and Viola Davis and Julius Tennon.

Codie Oliver recently talked to Multichannel News about the series’ final season as well as the impact Black Love has had on the culture as well as her own relationship. Oliver also talks about future plans for the Black Love franchise in an edited version of the interview that appears below. 

MCN: Is the final season of Black Love a bitter/sweet experience for the two of you?

Codie Oliver: Definitely. For seven years, we have filmed couples, just the two of us and them in the room, with the intention of making it as intimate as possible and for the conversations to be as transparent as possible. It has been logistically challenging as our family has grown and our businesses have grown but we’re excited about ending the series on a high note. It is bitter sweet especially for me because I love meeting incredible couples and sharing their stories through the docuseries, but I look forward to channeling that energy through the rest of our Black Love platforms. 

MCN: What should viewers expect to see in the final season of "Black Love?

CO: We have some new love and parenting journeys that we’re very excited to share, that will create conversation and hopefully expand people’s view of unconditional love. We always do an homage to the couples in season during the finale, but we have some special moments celebrating the legacy couples as well. We aren’t going to lie, there were some tears while editing.

MCN: Do you feel that you've accomplished the goals that you set for the series?

CO: Absolutely. We set out to make sure that our community knows that we are worthy and deserving of love, but it is not without hard work and understanding the meaning of commitment. We have been touched countless times by people sharing the impact that Black Love has had on them, whether they are single, engaged, married, married for decades, our show has been able to open their eyes to their relationship and its possibilities in new ways. 

MCN: What did you as a couple take away from having produced the series? Were there any major revelations and/or disappointments that you experienced in doing the show?

CO: We made a couple of observations having interviewed around 250 couples. One is that the commitment to being committed is what will see you through. It’s not revolutionary, but it is easy to get swallowed up by the ebbs and flows of a relationship when you don’t look at commitment in that way. Another thing is to always consider the 'why.' Your partner isn't perfect. You and they will make mistakes. But getting to the root of why something happened is the most worthwhile effort over thinking any one thing is insurmountable. Understanding why something happened helps diagnose and treat the underlying issues. We are the sum of all of our experiences, our past traumas, our baggage, our unexpressed expectations and sometimes that’s what's showing up in our relationship and course correction is needed.

MCN: What's next for the two of you?

CO: Tommy is running the production company he founded, called Confluential Films, and is a full-time producer, writer, director (and more). For me, Black Love is 365 days a year. We both run Black Love, Inc., but lead the team and oversee countless live and virtual events, custom video campaigns with brand partners, Black Love’s Podcast Network – I even host some of the podcasts, and I manage content for Black Love’s streaming platform, the Black Love+ App. We are committed to celebrating and affirming the Black community through the lens of love day in and day out.■

Showtime Thursday offered a sneak peek of life in the White House through the eyes of Michelle Obama, Betty Ford and Elanor Roosevelt as part of the official trailer for its upcoming anthology series The First Lady.

The 10-episode series, which debuts April 24 and stars Viola Davis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Gillian Anderson, provides a reframing of American leadership through the lens  of the First Ladies, exploring everything from their journeys to Washington, family life, and world-changing political contributions, according to the network.

The First Lady also stars Kiefer Sutherland, Aaron Eckhart, Dakota Fanning, Regina Taylor, Lily Rabe, Jayme Lawson and O-T Fagbenle. 

Executive producers for The First Lady include Davis, Cathy Schulman, Susanne Bier, Julius Tennon, Andrew Wang, Aaron Cooley, Pavlina Hatoupis, Alyson Feltes, Jeff Gaspin and Brad Kaplan. ■ 

Apple TV Plus has greenlit a second season of its unscripted biography series Dear …, which will debut March 4.

The new season of the series, which features leaders, entertainers and athletes gaining insight on their contributions to society by reading letters written by their fans, will feature the late fashion icon André Leon Talley, Viola Davis, Jane Fonda, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Ava DuVernay, Billy Porter, Sandra Oh, Malala Yousafzai and Laird Hamilton.

By reading these letters, each influential figure learns how they have unknowingly impacted others and gain new insight into how their work has made a unique contribution to the global community, said the streaming service.

The docuseries is executive produced by R.J. Cutler (Apple TV Plus's Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry) along with Jane Cha Cutler, Todd Lubin, Jay Peterson, and Donny Jackson.

The streaming service also announced an April 1 premiere date for its new espionage series Slow Horses, starring Gary Oldman.

The six-episode drama series, based on Mick Herron’s novels, follows a team of British intelligence agents who serve in a dumping ground department of MI5 – Slough House. Apple TV Plus will premiere the first two episodes, followed by one new episode weekly, every Friday. ■

Netflix continued its awards season success Sunday, dominating SAG Awards wins in both the television and motion picture categories during a televised primetime ceremony.

The streaming service won four SAG Awards in the television category to lead all distributors, doubling the take of second place Pop TV's two award wins.

Netflix was once again led by The Crown, which repeated as the top choice in the outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series category. The Crown star Gillian Anderson also won a SAG Award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series.

Pop TV’s Schitt’s Creek won two awards in the comedy category, including outstanding ensemble as well as best actress in a comedy series for Catherine O’Hara.

On the movie front, Netflix won three awards, including two for original movie Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom stars Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boesman, who took home SAG Awards for outstanding lead female and male actor in a motion picture, respectively.

Broadcast network ABC, led by its veteran comedy series Black-ish, secured more NAACP Image Awards than any other distributor in the television category, capping off the civil rights organization's week-long awards celebration recognizing the accomplishments of people of color over the past year.

ABC won eight NAACP awards, topping other multiple award-winning distributors including Netflix, Starz, HBO, Disney Junior, Comedy Central and the now defunct Quibi streaming service. 

ABC was led by Black-ish, which earned five NAACP Image Awards to top all shows. Starz’s Power Book II: Ghost and HBO’s Insecure also won multiple awards, including best drama and best comedy series, respectively. Netflix’s Self Made: Inspired by The Life of Madam C.J. Walker was the top choice for outstanding television movie. 

On the movie side, streaming service Netflix swept the major acting categories, including outstanding actor (Chadwick Boseman) and actress (Viola Davis) for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom; supporting actor (Boesman for Da 5 Bloods) and supporting actress (Phylicia Rashad for Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey). Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom also won for Outstanding Ensemble Cast. 

The 52nd NAACP Image Awards’ Saturday primetime telecast was hosted by Black-ish’s Anthony Anderson and aired across several ViacomCBS-owned networks, including CBS, BET and VH1. Along with television and film, the awards also honored excellence in the fields of music and literature.

In 2015 the entertainment industry called out the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences after none of the Academy Awards’ 20 acting nominations went to people of color. The #OscarsSoWhite hashtag became a rallying cry for greater inclusion and recognition of performances by and content from women and people of color.

While some may argue that this year’s crop of 2021 Oscar nominations snubbed many quality and arguably deserving and diverse film performances (Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods most notable), there’s no doubt that the Academy has made some strides with regards to inclusiveness, and presented one of its most diverse list of nominees ever.

Nearly half of the Academy’s acting nominations went to people of color this year, including three actors of Asian descent: two for best lead actor (Sound of Metal’s Riz Ahmed and Minari’s Steven Yeun) and one for best supporting actress (Minari’s Yuh-Jung Youn). In addition, six Black actors were nominated for acting awards: Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’s Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman; The United States vs. Billie Holiday’s Andra Day; One Night in Miami’s Leslie Odom Jr. and Judas and the Black Messiah’s LaKeith Stanfield and Daniel Kaluuya.

Davis’s best actress nomination for her performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom was her fourth acting nomination, the most for any Black actress.

Behind the camera, Chloe Zhao’s best director nomination for her work on Nomadland is the first for a woman of color in the category. Overall, a reported 70 women received a whopping 76 Oscar nominations, a remarkable and precedent-setting achievement.

In a pandemic-influenced year that featured an expanded Oscar field that for the first time included cinema-targeted movies that debuted first on streaming services along with theatrically-released films, diversity and inclusion was the big winner.

Netflix Monday unveiled the official trailer for its original movie Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, which will debut on the streaming service Dec. 18.

The movie, based on Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson's play and executive produced by Denzel Washington, stars Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman in his last film role, and follows the story of legendary "Mother of the Blues" Ma Rainey's 1927 recording session in Chicago, and the efforts of white management to control the process, according to Netflix.  

Also starring in the film are Colman Domingo, Michael Potts, Glynn Turman, Dusan Brown and Taylour Paige, said the service.

Amazon Studios and Viola Davis’s JuVee Productions company will team to produce a film on the life of political activist Shirley Chisholm, the first project under production deal reached between the two companies earlier this week.

Davis will star and serve as executive producer of The Fighting Shirley Chisholm, based on the life of the first woman and the first person of color to seek a major American political party’s nomination for President, said Amazon. 

The movie will be produced by Davis and Julius Tennon’s JuVee Productions company, which earlier this week inked a first-look production deal with Amazon Studios.

Davis and Tennon will serve as producers for The Fighting Shirley Chisholm along with Stephanie Allain and Mel Jones. Maggie Betts (Novitiate) will direct the screenplay, written by Adam Countee (Silicon Valley, Community, and Mindy Project), said Amazon. 

Amazon Studios has scored an exclusive first-look production deal with actress Viola Davis and actor/producer Julius Tennon’s JuVee Productions.

The deal calls for the Academy Award, Emmy Award and Tony Award winning actress and Tennon to create features for the streaming service. Davis recently wrapped up a comedy film, Troupe Zero, for Amazon Studios.

“Amazon Studios is passionate about building a home for both new and established filmmakers of all backgrounds, who share the same vision in telling incredible and engaging human stories,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios in a statement. “Viola and Julius Tennon’s JuVee Productions brings distinctive, fresh voices and high-quality content to our customers in both theaters and on Prime Video.”

The deal follows other recently announced Amazon Studios production deals with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Television for eight direct-to-service movies; Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman’s Blossom Films; The Handmaid’s Tale director Reed Morano; and Academy Award winning director Jordan Peele. 

As co-host of the 68th annual Emmy Awards nominations ceremony Thursday, black-ish star Anthony Anderson was overjoyed to read his name as an Emmy nominee for lead actor in a comedy series. 

He also enthusiastically cheered when his co-star Tracee Ellis Ross was nominated in the comedy lead actress category and when black-ish was chosen among the nominees for best comedy.

But Anderson’s humorous exploits were among only a few things the broadcast networks had to cheer about during the unveiling of the Emmy Awards nominations.

In recognizing the television industry’s incredible and unprecedented breadth and depth of content, the Television Academy this year leaned more toward cable networks as well as online streaming services like Netflix and Amazon when voting for the best quality series, original movies, limited series and original movies on television.

The big four broadcast networks were nearly shut out of the major drama categories, with Empire’s Taraji P. Henson and How To Get Away With Murder’s Viola Davis' nominations in the drama lead actress category keeping cable, PBS and online services from a complete sweep.

Moreover, cable nets and streaming services also generated a good portion of Emmy nominations for new shows that could rack up multiple Emmy Award nominations and wins in the years to come.

From freshman series such as Netflix’s Masters of None, which garnered nominations in the best Comedy and Best comedy actor categories for star Aziz Ansari, to USA’s sophomore thriller Mr. Robot -- a contender for best drama and best actor for breakout star Rami Malek -- the Emmy newbies were mostly from the cable and online arena.

That’s not to say that the broadcast networks are obsolete or incapable developing strong, new shows. But right now, the Academy has acknowledged that for this Emmy run the best and brightest new shows are on cable networks and online SVOD services.

Anderson’s enthusiasm for black-ish’s Emmy nominations could also be extended to television’s continued advancements in bringing quality, diverse shows, storylines and characters to the small screen. Non-white actors garnered a record 21 Emmy nominations this year, surpassing last year’s record of 18, according to Deadline.com.

FX’s American Crime Story: People v. O.J. Simpson and ABC’s black-ish led the way with multiple actors of color earning Emmy nominations, while the aforementioned Henson and Davis will again vie for lead actress honors in the drama category (Davis won last year, becoming the first African-American female actress to do so in the category). 

The stage is now set for a very fascinating Emmy Awards celebration in September. Bring on the winners.

Cable networks in general and HBO in particular were the big winners at the 67th annual Primetime Emmys Awards Sunday night as cable shows took home the lion’s share of awards in the major categories.

HBO series took home both the Best Drama series and Best Comedy series in Game Of Thrones and Veep respectively during the primetime awards telecast aired live on Fox.

Overall HBO won 14 primetime Emmy Awards, while Comedy Central won four. Amazon and Cartoon Network also won multiple awards with two each.

Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus also won the best actress in a comedy series for the fourth consecutive year, while Peter Dinklage won best supporting actor for his role in the Game Of Thrones fantasy series.

 HBO miniseries Olive Kitterage nearly ran the table in the newly-revamped Limited Series category, winning for best limited series, best actress in a limited series (Frances McDormand) best actor in a limited series (Richard Jenkins ) and best supporting actor in a limited series (Bill Murray).

The biggest non-cable award went to How To Get Away With Murder star Viola Davis, who became the first African-American woman to win the Best Actress in a Drama Series Emmy for her role in the ABC series.

Two cable personalities won Emmy awards after ending their respective shows. John Hamm won his first Best Drama Actor Emmy for his role as advertising executive Don Draper in AMC’s Mad Men, while Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show won Emmys for best variety talk series and best director for a variety series for Chuck O’Neill.

Amazon’s Transparent won several awards, including The Best Actor In A Comedy award for Jeffrey Tambor, as well as Best Director for a Comedy Series for Jill Soloway.

Mad Men will get one last chance to win Emmy hardware; the AMC series was nominated as part of an Emmy nominations announcement noted for its diversity and the inclusion of new shows.

Mad Men, which ended its run earlier this year, will compete in a very crowded Outstanding Drama series category that also includes fellow AMC series Better Call Saul and Downton Abbey (PBS), Game of Thrones (HBO), Homeland (Showtime) and Orange Is the New Black (Netflix), according to the the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which made the announcements during a press conference in Los Angeles and posted them on Emmys.com.

Mad Men's Jon Hamm will also look to garner an Emmy in the lead drama actor category.

The Emmy nominations  featured a number of multicultural actors and actresses in major categories, including two African-American actresss nominated in the drama category -- Viola Davis (ABC's How to Get Away With Murder) and Taraji P. Henson (Fox's Empire) -- in a category that no African-American actress has ever won. Also, Queen Latifah nabbed a best actress in a limited series or movie nod for her starring role in HBO's Bessie.

The nominations also featured several new series from streaming services like Amazon and Netflix. Amazon's Transparent was nominated for best comedy along with Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, while veteran actress Lily Tomlin was nominated for best comedy actress for her role in Netflix's Grace & Frankie. Tatiana Maslany, who has famously been snubbed by Emmy voters in past cycles despite her multiple-character exploits in BBC America's Orphan Black, was nominated for outstanding lead actress in a drama series.
