Daily Blast Live debuted Sept. 18 on 36 TEGNA stations as well as Facebook and You Tube, using VCC technology to do a live remote interview with a survivor of the recent mass shooting in Las Vegas.

VCC's Caller Cloud Video Service provides a caller acquisition and production system specifically designed to enable live, interactive broadcast remotes with celebrities, subject matter experts and everyday audience callers, according to the company. With the Caller Cloud TEGNA can:

Manage the process of screening and preparing callers for air in real-time. This includes the VCC’s team of call screeners and the use of Caller Queue, the VCC’s unique “green room in the cloud.”

Integrate video callers into the Daily Blast Live production control room located at TEGNA station KUSA in Denver where Daily Blast Live is produced.

Optimize the visual quality and reliability of video calls originating from smartphones and other devices using native video over IP applications and public Internet connections.

“Daily Blast LIVE is an innovative, fast-paced show that relies on the latest technology to engage with celebrities, experts and viewers no matter where they are,” said TEGNA senior vice president, programming Bob Sullivan in a statement. “TEGNA was an early adopter of the VCC and we are excited to work with them on DBL. Their innovative technology offers our production team numerous options to create an ever-changing and dynamic live program every day.”

TEGNA has had a long relationship with Video Call Center and was one of its first major investors back in 2015.

VCC CEO Larry Thaler said in an interview that the technology allows programmers to rapidly set up remote interviews by using the technology available to the subject, either their cell phones, laptops or tablets. And it brings a new twist to live segments, which he said are increasingly being demanded by advertisers and programmers.

“Live is dramatically more valuable with advertisers than pre-recorded content,” Thaler said.

VCC technology is showing up in other networks as well. The company has a long-standing relationship with Discovery Communications, which is using the VCC for a live segment near the end of Alaska: The Last Frontieron the Discovery Channelthat allows fans to call in and ask cast members questions. The technology also is being used by Discovery network TLC in an epilogue as part of its 90-day Fiancéshow, giving updates on couples after their segments finish taping. VCC provides a way around the logistical and costs constraints inherent in bringing the couples together from halfway around the world, Thaler said. It’s first epilogue show airs on Oct. 30.

The VCC provides comprehensive editorial control and in-depth call moderation to ensure that only the most compelling and appropriate callers make it to air. This interaction between the host and callers is accomplished without the need for an expensive control room.

“The combination of Facebook Live and the Video Call Center creates a remarkable opportunity for media companies to quickly and easily create compelling, live, programs for delivery to Facebook’s millions of members,” said Video Call Center CEO Larry Thaler in a statement. “The partnership will help to ensure seamless integration within Facebook Live so producers can focus entirely on creative content, rather than technology, and Facebook Live viewers have one click access to engage with show hosts. This is a major step forward for truly Social TV.”

The integration with Facebook Live works with any video call application, meaning callers can join live from anywhere using any device. VCC has successfully tested more than a dozen IP video calling services, including Facebook Messenger, Skype TM, FaceTime® and Gruveo (WebRTC). New apps and new distribution platforms such as support for Facebook Live are being added all the time.

With the VCC, callers become part of broadcast quality television programs for Facebook Live that combine video calls, video clips, graphics and web content, all under the direct control of a host who can be located anywhere in the world. The exclusive Caller Queue™—the world’s first “Green Room in the Cloud”—allows show producers to welcome video callers into their live caller-based television programs or video events. Scalable to support the audience of live TV programs, producers have complete creative control to bring the right people to air at the precise moment when they would contribute to create the most compelling program.

Former Wall Street media analyst Tom Wolzien’s Video Call Center, a content company with a patented technology that enables television shows and networks to conduct live video call-ins much like radio programs, has expanded the capabilities of its offering, introducing the Video App Choice, which allows producers to choose which IP Video is best for specific programs.

Wolzien received the patent for Video Call Center in 2014. In June he attracted broadcast TV station powerhouse Tegna as a “significant” investor in the company.

With Video App Choice, different callers can even use different IP video applications side by side within the same program. In its first full-system demonstration of the new approach, the VCC filled its eight caller system with callers using eight different IP video applications.

“Our customers told us they didn’t want to be locked into Skype or FaceTime or any other single IP video provider for good business reasons,” Wolzien said in a statement. “Therefore the VCC team designed and rewrote our 4TH generation Caller Acquisition Technology (CAT) to run on either PCs or MACs to handle any video application that doesn’t require proprietary hardware.”

Production manager and producer Tom Porpiglia has been running the tests using various IP video applications. Text overlays (lower thirds), and caller database and caller clearance information flow seamlessly between applications and call computers whether they are PCs or Macs. “In a show with dozens of callers, the Call Screeners can’t be worrying about whether a caller has the right video application, and with these advances we can now match the call computer’s software to the caller to get them on the air quickly and with the best possible quality,” he said in a statement.
IP Video applications that were part of the simultaneous demonstration included include Facebook, AOL video service, FaceTime® video calling, ooVoo, Skype, Viber, Google Hangouts and Gruveo. Additional successful tests have been done with conferencing services FUZE, WebEx, GoToMeeting, and Global Meeting, among others.

“Nobody in television likes being beholden to any one provider, particularly when IP video providers have many other and larger constituencies to serve,” Wolzien added in a statement. “Single web video providers can change their software functionality and terms without notice. Some have been trying to force producers to use specific equipment. We concluded along with our customers, that multiple IP video options are essential for the industry to maintain independence. That’s why The Video Call Center created this new Video App Choice approach.”
