Lee Daniels, 20th Century Fox TV Sign Multiyear Deal

Lee Daniels, cocreator and executive producer of Fox’s breakout hit Empire, agreed to a multiyear deal Monday with Twentieth Century Fox Television.

Under the deal, Daniels will continue his role with Empire, as well as develop, write, direct and supervise projects for the studio under his Lee Daniels Entertainment banner.

“Lee Daniels has a gift for telling authentic, provocative stories that are both truthful and wildly entertaining,” said Fox Television Group chairmen and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman in a joint statement. “His casting instincts are incredible, whether he is discovering tomorrow’s stars or attracting the most accomplished performers to his projects. As a director, he elevates world-class material to even greater heights, balancing heart-wrenching poignancy with surprising moments of levity that are over the top and fun. Quite simply, we love working with this inspired storyteller, and this deal is about extending and deepening our relationship.”

Daniels, along with fellow executive producers Danny Strong, Ilene Chaiken, Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo, helped guide Empire as it became the highest-rated broadcast drama in seven years.

“I’m incredibly excited to continue my relationship with Dana and Gary, and the rest of the Fox team,” said Daniels. “I’m looking forward to developing content and finding alternative voices for both in front of and behind the camera.”

Twentieth, You On Demand Sign Licensing Deal

Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution has licensed a broad swath of its film library to You on Demand, a multi-platform subscription video-on-demand service in China.

Films included in the agreement include A-Team starring Bradley Cooper and Liam Neeson; Black Swan starring Academy-Award winner, Natalie Portman; 10-time Academy-Award nominated film, Master and Commander, starring Russell Crowe; Speed, starring Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves; and Unstoppable, starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pine.

You on Demand already had a licensing agreement with the programmer for transactional VOD. Under the new SVOD deal, subscribers can access the films via mobile, over-the-top streaming, digital cable and IPTV.

The service, based in New York and Beijing, also carries content from Disney Media Distribution, Paramount Pictures, NBC Universal, Miramax Films, Lionsgate and Magnolia Pictures, as well as a selection of content from Chinese filmmakers.

Jeff Eastin Signs Deal with TCFTV, FTVS

Creator and executive producer of USA's Graceland and White Collar, Jeff Eastin has signed a new overall deal with Twentieth Century Fox Television and Fox Television Studios, the networks announced today.

In the new role, Eastin will develop new cable and broadcast projects, but will continue to serve as executive producer on Graceland.

“Jeff is one of those very few writers who can write great characters and surprising plots, while at the same time infusing a really specific comedic tone. His offbeat sensibility gives him a unique perspective on franchise television shows, and we are excited to develop his next hit for broadcast, said EVP of TCFT Michael Thorn in a release.

Represented by CAA and Karl Austen, Eastin has previously served as the creator and executive producer of the NBC series, Hawaii.
