Apple TV Plus will look to crush the competition with a new live-action series based on the Monsterverse movie franchise.

The as yet-named series will follow the period after the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco to explore one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch, said the streaming service. 

The series comes on the heels of the successful 2021 film release of Godzilla vs Kong, which debuted simultaneously in theaters and HBO Max. Other films in the Monsterverse franchise include 2014’s Godzilla, 2017’s Kong: Skull Island and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Monsterverse films have accumulated close to two billion dollars globally at the box office, according to Apple TV Plus.

Chris Black (Star Trek: Enterprise) and Matt Fraction (Hawkeye) will serve as executive producer of the series, alongside Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell. ■

HBO Max has renewed two of its DC Comics-themed series, Titans and Doom Patrol, for fourth seasons, the streaming service said Saturday at the DC FanDome event.

Titans, which ends its third season on the streaming service Oct. 21, follows young heroes from across the DC Universe. The series, which moved to HBO Max for season three after its first two seasons were featured on the DC Universe streaming service, stars Brenton Thwaites, Anna Diop, Teagan Croft, Ryan Potter, Conor Leslie, Curran Walters and Joshua Orpin.

Doom Patrol, which is currently streaming its third season on HBO Max, reimagines one of DC’s most beloved groups of superheroes who all suffered a horrible accident that gave them superhuman abilities, but also left them scarred and disfigured. Part support group, part superhero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of super-powered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them, according to the streaming service.

The series stars Brendan Fraser, Matt Bomer, Diane Guerrero, April Bowlby, Joivan Wade, Timothy Dalton, Skye Roberts and Michelle Gomez.

A bevy of new and returning scripted series lead the list of original show and movie premieres this week.

FX on Hulu on Aug. 9 debuts Reservation Dogs, a drama that follows four Indigenous teenagers in rural Oklahoma who do whatever is necessary to travel to California. Sterlin Harjo, Garrett Basch and Taika Waititi serve as executive producers for the series, which features an all indigenous writing/directing staff and cast.

Starz jumps into the wrestling ring with its new original series, Heels, debuting Aug. 15. The series follows two brothers following their father's footsteps in the pro wrestling arena. 

Also this week, the third season of superhero-themed series Titans debuts on HBO Max Aug. 12. The first two season of the series streamed on the DC Universe service.

HBO Max has released the official trailer for season three of its superhero drama series Titans, which will debut Aug. 12.

Titans follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find where they belong. In season three, circumstances draw the young heroes to Gotham City, where they will reunite with old friends and face new threats, said HBO Max.

The series stars Brenton Thwaites, Anna Diop, Teagan Croft, Ryan Potter, Conor Leslie, Curran Walters,  Joshua Orpin, Alan Ritchson, Minka Kelly, Damaris Lewis, Savannah Welch and Vincent Kartheiser. Jay Lycurgo will recur this season, according to the streaming service.

The first two seasons of Titans streamed on the DC Universe streaming service before moving to HBO Max.

HBO Max said it will stream the first three episodes of Titans' third season Aug. 12, with subsequent episodes launching weekly through Oct. 21.

Streaming networks Hulu and Netflix lead what is a limited rollout of new, scripted shows premiering from Sept. 3 to Sept. 8.

Hulu’s Sept. 4 premiere of Wu-Tang: An American Saga (pictured) follows the origins of the legendary rap group Wu-Tang Clan, according to the service.

Netflix on Sept. 6 will debut The Spy, starring Sacha Baron Cohen as former Mossad agent Eli Cohen, who successfully goes undercover in Syria in the early 1960s, said Netflix.
