NBC outlined its midseason plans, which includes comedy Night Court premiering January 17 and Magnum P.I. starting its NBC run February 19.

Mondays in the midseason, it’s America’s Got Talent: All-Stars and The Voice. AGT begins January 2 and The Voice premieres March 6. Chance the Rapper and Niall Horan are Voice coaches along with Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton.

On Tuesdays, Night Court begins January 17. Melissa Rauch plays the late Harry Stone's daughter and takes the gavel, sparring with new public defender John Larroquette.

The original Night Court went for nine seasons on NBC in the ‘80s and early ‘90s.

New Amsterdam ends January 17 with a two-hour finale. The show has gone for five seasons.

American Auto starts season two Tuesday, January 24, and That’s My Jam kicks off season two March 7.

Wednesdays have the Chicago shows -- Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. Thursday is Law & Order night, with the flagship, SVU and Organized Crime.

Magnum P.I. makes its NBC debut February 19, with Jay Hernandez in the lead role. NBC calls Magnum “a modern take on the classic series centering on Thomas Magnum, a decorated former Navy SEAL who, upon returning home from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator.”

Magnum had four seasons on CBS, years after it had eight seasons back in the ‘80s.

Greg Berlanti drama Found begins February 19 too. Shanola Hampton stars as a public relations specialist looking out for the forgotten missing people around the world, while keeping a chilling secret from those who know her.

The Blacklist season 10 premieres February 26.

“Following another winning fall, we’re looking forward to a great January and beyond with a strong schedule that delivers on the return of many favorites coupled with fantastic new premieres,” said Frances Berwick, chairman, Entertainment Networks, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “We continue to program with an eye toward a year-round schedule, constantly providing our audiences with new reasons to tune in and engage either live on NBC or stream next day on Peacock.”

There’s no premiere date yet for Grand Crew, The Wheel and L.A. Fire and Rescue.

“We can’t wait to share these terrific new series with our audience,” said Susan Rovner, chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “Found, from Greg Berlanti and Nkechi Okoro Carroll, is a stellar addition to our drama lineup while Magnum, P.I. comes to us with a passionate fan base already in place that we intend to nourish. On the comedy side, having John Larroquette and Melissa Rauch co-star in an updated Night Court is a dream come true, and our critically acclaimed comedy American Auto is back with its hilarious and ironic look at corporate America. Add AGT: All-Stars to that mix and it’s a great start to the new year.” ■

This is a quick snapshot of TV by the numbers for the week of Oct. 19-25, revealing the most-watched shows and networks using glass-level data from Vizio’s Inscape, and the top shows and networks by TV ad impressions with insights via iSpot.tv.

Most-Watched Shows and Networks

Via Vizio’s Inscape, the TV data company with insights from a panel of more than 16 million active and opted-in smart TVs. Data is linear, live TV only and includes all episode types (new and reruns). Rankings are by percent share duration (i.e., time spent watching).

Once again sports led for watch-time: NFL games captured 6.70% of the minutes watched last week, followed by the 2020 World Series (3.33%) and college football (1.53%). Various news programs also rose up in the rankings, and it’s worth noting that all of the shows that didn’t see week-over-week rankings changes were Fox News programs. The Voice, which had its two-night premiere on Oct. 19 and 20, jumped into 12th place with 0.57% of the minutes watched.

Fox took No. 1 on the network ranking for the second week in a row (10.09%), thanks in part to NFL and World Series games. NBC rose into second place with 8.19% of the minutes watched, partially fueled by NFL games and The Voice. Multiple cable networks also moved up, including two ranking newcomers: Hallmark Movies & Mysteries (0.92%) and TV Land (0.86%).

Top Shows and Networks by TV Ad Impressions

Via iSpot.tv, the always-on TV ad measurement and attribution company. Rankings are by TV ad impressions, for new episodes only.

TV ad impressions for NFL games jumped up 26.83% week-over-week, to 8.4 billion. MLB (3.4 billion) and college football (3.2 billion) maintained their second and third places, respectively. NBC’s The Voice, which kicked off its 19th season last week, snagged fourth place with 784.2 million TV ad impressions, nearly 110 million more than the No. 5 program (America’s Newsroom).

Not only did Fox keep its first-place position from the previous week, it delivered over 8.3 billion TV ad impressions, a 46.22% week-over-week increase. CBS, in second place with nearly 6.9 billion impressions, also saw an increase: 36.95%. Unsurprisingly, sports were critical to the impressions for both networks: On Fox, over 3.3 billion impressions came from MLB games and 3.2 billion from NFL games — combined, making up 78.8% of the network’s total impressions for the week. Over half of CBS’ impressions came from NFL games (3.2 billion), with Big Brother as the No. 2 impressions-driving program (419.3 million). Notable newcomers to the top 25 ranking included Hallmark (337.6 million impressions), which kicked off its “Countdown to Christmas” movie event on Oct. 24, and Big Ten Network (245.4 million), a result of the Big Ten conference finally starting their season.

NBC has shared its fall schedule. The Voice and Manifest go on Mondays. The Voice, This Is Us and New Amsterdam are on Tuesdays. Wednesdays, it’s Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. Thursdays have Superstore, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Law & Order: SVU and new show Law & Order: Organized Crime. Fridays have The Blacklist and Dateline NBC. On Saturdays, it’s Dateline Saturday Night Mystery and Saturday Night Live reruns in prime. Sundays it’s Football Night in America and Sunday Night Football.

Gwen Stefani returns to The Voice as a judge.

Law & Order: Organized Crime has Christopher Meloni reprising the Elliot Stabler role he plays on SVU. He “returns to the NYPD to battle organized crime after a devastating personal loss. However, the city and police department have changed dramatically in the decade he’s been away, and he must adapt to a criminal justice system in the midst of its own moment of reckoning,” according to NBC.

NBC touted the stability of its new schedule. “Thanks to the ingenuity of our creative teams and our partner studios, NBC has assembled a remarkably stable schedule at a time when stability is called for,” said Paul Telegdy, chairman, NBC Entertainment. “With the reopening of the Universal lot for select productions this week, we are confident that our schedule will premiere intact later this fall. We design shows for longevity and this schedule remains a powerful propulsive force for shows to start here and carry on entertaining across generations.”

Telegdy continued, “Our brand has always championed positive programming, and the events of this year have allowed us the time to take pause, examine our business with a new lens and take some immediate action. Since many of our writers’ rooms have not yet opened, we are taking this opportunity to offer all of this season’s showrunners the chance to enrich their team with an additional diverse writer at any level. It is not the solution by any means, but it is something we can do right now to take a positive step.”

The midseason and summer seasons feature the Tina Fey/Robert Carlock comedy Mr. Mayor, which stars Ted Danson; Kenan, with Kenan Thompson; and Young Rock, with Dwayne Johnson, and about his childhood. Those seasons will also have Good Girls, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Ellen’s Game of Games, musical game show That’s My Jam, alternative-scripted series True Story and game show Small Fortune.

The feature for X1 debuts with tonight’s episode, which starts at 8 p.m. ET.

All X1 boxes will support the voting feature. Comcast's X1 customers can vote via the voice remote by saying, “Vote for The Voice,” into their X1 voice remotes, or by pressing the “info” button on any X1 remote.

The ballot, appearing on the right side of the TV screen, categorizes the artists by team, allowing viewers to cast a vote for their favorite performers. Viewers can cast one vote per artist on X1 during the live broadcast and up until on hour after the conclusion of that night’s show.

Comcast said X1 is currently the only partner of NBC’s The Voice to offer a TV-based voting option (Comcast owns NBC).

About 57% of Comcast’s residential pay TV subscriber base, which stood at 21.34 million at the end of Q3, is on X1. Comcast has deployed more than 17 million X1 voice remotes so far.

Comcast hasn’t announced when it will extend similar voting capabilities to other shows from NBC or other programmers, but it’s already using X1 to deliver interactive features like its sports app, as well as widgets for weather, horoscopes, news, traffic, and access to voice mail and the Xfinity My Account app.

“We look forward to amplifying the excitement of the live shows even more by giving fans of watching The Voice on X1 a new way to interact with the show this season,” Daniel Spinosa, vice president, entertainment services for Comcast Cable, said in a statement. We believe X1 offers customers the best in-home entertainment experience, and this is another great example of how we are partnering with networks to leverage the platform to create new interactive experiences.”

“The Voice has always been a show that leverages the digital space, and each season we continue to innovate on ways to engage fans across platforms,” added Rob Hayes, EVP, digital at NBC Entertainment. “The X1 partnership, which gives audiences a seamless interactive viewing experience, is a natural extension of The Voice’s brand as one of the most social shows on television.”

Today, that is becoming reality at NBCU – it rebranded its Style Network as Esquire Network and shuttered its G4 channel in 2013 – and with other content companies as well.

“We and most other large media companies are concentrating on their big brands,” Burke said on the call. “We had a network called G4 and a network called Style, neither one currently exists. I think you will see more of that with us and others as the discussions with MVPDs get more and more contentious. You want to make sure that your big networks are fully supported and you’re more willing to reallocate. Normally when you do those reallocations they’re not all that negative for the content owner because you can take some of the programming and fees and ad sales and consolidate them on some of your bigger networks”

Burke said the focus on its larger brands like broadcaster NBC and cable channels like USA Network, Syfy, Bravo and others makes the programming bundle more compelling.

“The good news for us is if you have NBC, you really need to be in a bundle, if you have USA it needs to be in a bundle, if you have Syfy or Bravo or E! those are big substantial networks that are in the bundle,” Burke said. “We make most of our money in those big channels. And we’ve trimmed and I think you’ll see us and others continue to trim some of the more marginal channels. There are just too many channels. People are spending too much programming channels that are not fully distributed. You’d much rather put your money and have Mr. Robot on USA and The Voice and Blindspot on NBC and really go with your strong networks.

Burke continued that it is an ongoing process, and NBCU sees more to be done.

“I think there is more to do,” Burke said. “I don’t think it is going to have a material impact on the way our profitability looks in terms of cable channels one way or the other – it might be slightly positive. I think it will evolve itself over the next number of years. We’ll continue to invest what we need to invest in the big guys and try to trim some of the smaller ones.”
