CBS’s daytime panel talk show The Talk will end its run with a shortened 15th season, concluding the show in December, CBS confirmed Friday.

“The Talk broke new ground when it launched 14 years ago by returning daytime talk to CBS with a refreshing and award-winning format. Throughout the years, it has been a key program on CBS’ top-rated daytime line-up as it brought timely, important and entertaining topics and discussions into living rooms around the globe,” Amy Reisenbach, president, CBS Entertainment, and David Stapf, president, CBS Studios, said in a joint statement.

“It goes without saying that hosting and producing a year-round talk show is no easy task, and we express our sincere gratitude to our amazing hosts Akbar Gbajabiamila, Amanda Kloots, Natalie Morales, Jerry O’Connell and Sheryl Underwood, our Executive Producer/Showrunner Rob Crabbe and the hardworking producing team and crew,“ the statement continued. “We also want to acknowledge our former show hosts and colleagues who contributed throughout the seasons. We truly appreciate the skill, creativity, and dedication everyone involved brought to the show every day. And of course, we thank the numerous guests who appeared and the millions of viewers who tuned in daily. For the final season, we plan to celebrate the show and give it the proper sendoff it deserves when it concludes in December 2024.”

CBS has not said what will fill The Talk’s time slot come January, although it has soap opera The Gates, which will follow a wealthy Black family living in a gated community, in development. CBS also just handed multiseason pickups to both of its soap operas, The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful.

The Talk, developed and produced by actress Sara Gilbert, premiered in 2010. Its original panel featured Gilbert, Julie Chen Moonves, Sharon Osbourne, Leah Remini and Holly Robinson Peete. Over the years, the panel has changed with Marissa Jaret Winokur, Aisha Tyler, Eve, Carrie Ann Inaba and Marie Osmond all taking turns. The show made big changes in 2021, shaking up the panel by adding men for the first time in Gbajabiamila and O’Connell.

With the writers strike over, daytime shows are finally premiering their new seasons after initially having to delay.

On Monday, CBS’s The Talk posted on Instagram that it would debut next Monday, October 9. The Talk originally had been scheduled to premiere on Monday, September 18, but was forced to delay after Drew Barrymore, star of her own eponymous talk show, posted a lengthy video apology on Instagram for deciding to go ahead with her own show’s return. The post created an outcry among Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA members — all of whom were on strike at the time — and two days later, Barrymore posted that the show would not go on while pulling the apology video. CBS Media Ventures’s The Drew Barrymore Show still has not announced a return date, although it’s expected to come back this month.

A post shared by The Talk (@thetalkcbs)

A photo posted by on

That forced the hand of Warner Bros.’s Jennifer Hudson, which stayed quiet through the fracas, and CBS’s The Talk, which had seen protests outside its Radford studio prior to deciding to delay. After moving off of its initial plan to return on Monday, September 18, Hudson opens its second season on Monday, October 2, with first-week guests Gwen Stefani and Niall Horan, coaches on NBC’s The Voice, as well as Taye Diggs, Cedric the Entertainer and Shaquille O’Neal.

Debmar-Mercury’s Sherri had to return to repeats just two days after it debuted season two on Monday, September 18, because host Sherri Shepherd came down with COVID-19.
Akbar Gbajabiamila is the latest co-host to join CBS' daytime show The Talk for season 12, CBS said Thursday. Gbajabiamila, who appeared as a guest host in June and July, joins Sheryl Underwood, Amanda Kloots and Jerry O’Connell on the show, which premieres its new season on Monday, Sept. 13.

"It's a new day in daytime for season 12 of The Talk, and we are thrilled to welcome Akbar to the family. His engaging personality, openness and quick wit really impressed us when he appeared as a guest co-host last season," said Heather Gray, The Talk’s executive producer and showrunner in a statement.

Gbajabiamila and O'Connell are new members to the panel as Elaine Welteroth departed earlier this week. Also leaving in the past year have been Eve, Sharon Osbourne -- who departed after backing Piers Morgan when he made controversial statements regarding Meghan Markle after her primetime interview with Oprah Winfrey -- and most recently, Carrie Ann Inaba.

Gbajaiamila and O'Connell are the only two men who have been permanent members of the show's panel.

Also Read: Jerry O'Connell Is 'The Talk's First Male Co-Host

"To be a part of this diverse group is truly a dream and a new statement for The Talk. In a world as divided as ours, I look forward to showing up as my fun and authentic self every day and advocating for conversation over confrontation," said Gbajabiamila, also in a statement.

Former NFL player Gbajabiamila is the host of NBC's competition series American Ninja Warrior and American Ninja Warrior Junior. He became a published author in 2019 with his critically acclaimed debut book, Everyone Can Be a Ninja: Find Your Inner Warrior and Achieve Your Dreams.

He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, four children and two dogs.

Jerry O’Connell is replacing Sharon Osbourne as one of the co-hosts of CBS' daytime talker The Talk, making him the first man to occupy one of the show’s permanent seats. O’Connell has been a frequent guest-host of the show this summer.

Last month, Fox announced that O'Connell would host a test of game show Pictionary on select Fox stations starting July 12.

Also Read: Jerry O’Connell to Host ‘Pictionary’ Game Show on Fox Stations

O'Connell joins The Talk’s Sheryl Underwood, Carrie Ann Inaba, Amanda Kloots, Eve and Elaine Welteroth. He comes on board after Sharon Osbourne departed in March after defending English news anchor Piers Morgan's comments about Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle after her and husband Prince Harry sat for a primetime interview with Oprah Winfrey. Morgan stomped off the set of Good Morning Britain after co-host Alex Beresford challenged him on air for saying that he didn’t believe Markle’s claims of bullying and racism within Buckingham Palace or that she considered suicide as she said in the interview.

O'Connell has plenty of daytime experience. He has been a frequent co-host of Disney's Live with Kelly, sitting next to Kelly Ripa after Regis Philbin retired in 2011 and again after Michael Strahan departed in 2015. He was considered a finalist to become the show's permanent co-host.

He also guest-hosted for Wendy Williams during summer 2016 when Williams took time off to deal with some personal issues.

As a result of that guest-hosting stint, Fox tested a talk show called Jerry O in 2019 starring O'Connell but it didn't proceed into national syndication. In 2014, CBS developed a talk show pilot around O'Connell and his wife Rebecca Romijn called Man in the Middle that also did not go forward when CBS could not find available daytime time slots for it.

O'Connell also has guest-hosted ABC's The View.

With Fox testing Pictionary this summer, O'Connell could find himself with two shows on his hands by next year.

Rand Paul, Rep. John Lewis, Sen. Cory Booker and more, said the network.

The move is part of the network’s multiscreen-based campaign #The Talk – an expansion of its Look Different anti-discrimination initiative – that encourages its audience to have a candid conversation on race with family and friends, said network officials.

In addition, MTV’s online, mobile and social platforms will encourage audience members to share their own reflections using the #thetalk and get involved through its Look Different website, LookDifferent.org.

MTV will share many of the audience contributions on-air and online.

“Millennials believe strongly in fairness, but they can also find it difficult to talk openly about race – to be not simply ‘color blind’ but ‘color brave,’ said Stephen Friedman, President of MTV in a statement. “Our audience is looking for a way to bring the national conversation on race into their homes and this campaign will give them a forum to express true color bravery.”
