In calculating its Power Score, TVision, which measures activity across more than 1,000 apps, looks at the amount of time viewers pay attention to the program, the amount of program time available for the season and the program’s reach, as well as the application’s reach.

TVision said it chose that combination of metrics to enable a neutral look at the quality of programming and its unique, inherent ability to draw in viewers — regardless of the scale of the platform or the program’s release schedule.

The beleaguered Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its 2022 Golden Globe Awards nominations Monday (December 13) as the organization continues to operate with no TV home for its January 9 awards ceremony and under a cloud of controversy that threatens to undermine its relevance

With Snoop Dogg reading the names of the nominees — often incorrectly, to humorous effect — the Golden Globes will forge ahead even as the HFPA continues to face criticism over the lack of diversity among its board members. In a release, the HFPA said it had admitted “their largest and most diverse class to date of 21 new members, all of whom are first-time Golden Globe voters.” Still, it’s unclear if the January 9 show will air on traditional television after longtime distributor NBC announced earlier in the year that it will not televise the Globes ceremony due to the controversy.

This year’s Golden Globes nominations in the television categories featured more diversity than last year’s nomination class. Nods for Uzo Abdula (HBO’s In Treatment) and Michaela Jae Rodriguez (FX’s Pose) in the best actress drama category, as well as Issa Rae (HBO’s Insecure) and Tracee Ellis Ross (ABC’s Black-ish) for best comedy/movie actress, and Cynthia Erivo (National Geographic’s Genius: Aretha) for best actress in a television motion picture come one year after no actresses of color were nominated in any major TV category for 2021. That was despite industry recognized performances from Emmy-nominated actress Jurnee Smollett in HBO’s Lovecraft Country and Critics Choice Awards-nominated Michaela Coel in HBO’s drama series I May Destroy You.

Also, the HFPA recognized shows featuring people of color in lead roles such as Netflix’s Squid Game and Lupin as well as FX’s Pose (best drama series), Amazon’s The Underground Railroad (best television motion picture) and FX’s Reservation Dogs (best musical/comedy series).

The HFPA gravitated to streaming services in a big way in its nomination choices. Hulu and Netflix were the big standouts with 10 nominations each — behind only the 15 nods from the combined HBO/HBO Plus — with Apple TV Plus coming in with eight nods.

In addition, seven of the top 10 most-nominated shows were from streaming services, led by Apple TV Plus'sThe Morning Show and Ted Lasso with four nominations each, followed by three nominations each for Hulu’s Dopesick, The Great and Only Murders in the Building, HBO Max’s Hacks, and Netflix’s Maid and Squid Game.

Also, the HFPA has often been lauded — and at times criticized — for its penchant for nominating shows that are considered outside of Hollywood’s mainstream, but this year’s list of nominations seemed to have fewer surprise nominations than in previous years. With the exceptions of Netflix’s Lupin and Squid Game along with FX’s Reservation Dogs, many of its nominations were given to the industry’s most high-profile and most talked-about shows, from top-nominated series, HBO’s Succession, to Apple TV Plus's Ted Lasso. ■

Before the blissful delight of Ted Lasso, there was the weight of The Morning Show, which kicks off its second season Friday.

In 2019, Apple committed a reported $300 million for two 10-episode seasons of the heavyweight #MeToo-era drama, which is produced by Reese Witherspoon’s just sold Hello Sunshine, and stars Witherspoon alongside Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell, Mark Duplass and Billy Crudup in a fictionally loose adaptation of the scandal that consumed NBC Today Show host Matt Lauer several years earlier.

Apple touted a small number of big name stars and big projects in the run-up to the November 2019 launch of subscription streaming service Apple TV Plus—the Jason Momma-led See and the Steven Spielberg-produced Amazon Stories, among them. But it was usually collateral from The Morning Show you’d see first and most often every time Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage to tout his company’s splashy new entry into the “streaming wars.”

Despite all of the aspirations and star-power backing, the series didn’t take off with critics, many of whom felt The Morning Show was a little overwrought for first thing in the Apple TV Plus morning—Season 1 scored a 61% aggregation rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The series did provide Apple TV Plus with its first Emmy, via Crudup, who garnered a 2020 Supporting Actor trophy for his portrayal of fast-talking, pompous—and ultimately, complicit—executive producer, Cory Ellison. (That was, of course, only a small taste of the TV Academy lovefest that would come later for Ted Lasso.)

Whether or not the general public watched or liked The Morning Show is debatable—and perhaps even unknowable, based on how little information Apple releases about its SVOD service’s audience, even to this day.

Since its first day on Apple TV Plus, anyone using the widely distributed free Apple TV app could see the first two episodes of The Morning Show for at no charge before being asked to sign up for the subscription platform’s seven-day free trial. And up until recently, if you owned or purchased Apple hardware, there was a year-long free trial for Apple TV Plus.

According to a report in paywalled insider site The Information last week, Apple TV Plus now has around 40 million signups and about 20 million regular users. But this seems, to a degree, well informed guesswork—perhaps not too different from the anecdotal gut instinct that tells us that there just weren’t that many people watching Apple TV Plus 21 months ago, when the first season of The Morning Show hit the ol’ WiFi router.

And if The Information’s data is right, much of that audience only truly began coalescing in August 2020, when the first true Apple TV Plus watercooler hit, Ted Lasso, emerged, ultimately becoming the kind of Emmy darling and app download driver that Cook and his team originally hoped The Morning Show would be.

But now, after a COVID-induced hiatus, the sophomore season of The Morning Show is finally here. Based on Apple’s "California Streaming" event earlier this week, Apple executives haven’t given up hope that the series will fulfill their original ambitions for it.

Taking a break from his biggest agenda item--hyping the new iPhone 13--Cook prominently included Season 2 TMS clips in a video montage highlighting Apple TV Plus’ Lasso-led 35 Emmy nominations this year.

With Apple TV Plus only featuring a very finite number of premium original shows at launch—a limitation that was compounded when COVID-19 locked down TV and film production—The Morning Show production team, led by creators Jay Carson and Kerry Ehrin, not to mention the cast, undoubtedly felt the pressure to carry the entire platform.

According to The Information report, Apple plans to double the amount of original shows devoted to Apple TV Plus in 2022.

More content—and an already established hit—means that less is riding on the second installment of The Morning Show, which narratively picks up nine months after anchor Alex Levy (Aniston) had her own on-air Network-esque “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore” moment, following sleazy scandal that took down her ex co-anchor, Mitch Kessler (Carell)

That said, there's always pressure to perform, especially now that Apple TV Plus is no longer free. (Apple downgraded the one-year free trial for gadget buyers to just three months at the beginning of the summer.)

Maybe this time around, a bigger cohort of Apple TV Plus watchers will find that the excessive sweetness of Ted Lasso has jacked their blood sugar levels a little too, and they need some topical, relevant dramatic protein to balance things out.

Reviewing all 10 Season 2 episodes of The Morning Show, it can be safely stated that the series remains feel-good free. It’s still layered and loaded with subtext, covering topics including the pandemic, racial inequality, and of course, narcissistic egomaniacs. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep the finite number of Season 1 fans happy, while perhaps enticing a much larger audience of later adopters.

Plot twists aside, the show is just plain fun to watch, primarily due to Aniston and Crudup’s performances. Watching Aniston transform from America’s “girl next door” to a manipulative, insecure, businesswoman is pure joy—almost as much fun as watching Crudup as as the increasingly desperate Ellison.

The new season also introduces more can't-take-my-eyes-off-them characters like network executive Stella Bak, played perfectly by Greta Lee, and Julianna Margulies as news anchor Laura Peterson.

While The Morning Show is not aspirational like Ted Lasso, it’s arguably more compelling. Watching a show about characters who are unapologetically human—fearful, proud, insecure and who don't always end up doing the right thing—may not warm the heart.

But perhaps, in the end, it'll lead to an even more lasting watercooler discussion for Apple TV Plus.

While the rest of the entertainment world tries to get its head around the idea that Lebron James could sell his one-year-old production company, The SpringHill Company, for $750 million and Reese Witherspoon is considering unloading her Hello Sunshine production company for about $1 billion, Barclays media analyst Kannan Venkateshwar wrote Friday that streaming distribution has turned the way companies value programming on its ear.

James reportedly started SpringHill with a $100 million investment and has been fielding interest from several possible suitors, including Nike, according to The Information. Best known for the just-released Space Jam: A New Legacy film and the HBO series The Shop (it also owns a small marketing arm) a $750 million sales price represents a more than robust premium, even for an NBA legend.

Academy-Award-winning actress Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine has produced the hit HBO series Big Little Lies, Little Fires Everywhere for Hulu and The Morning Show for Apple TV Plus. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Hello Sunshine is working with investment bankers to determine its options, and there is no guarantee a sale will take place. No revenue figures were available, but other reports have said the production company is expected to turn its first profit this year. AT&T is part owner of Hello Sunshine, through its Otter Media unit.

But whether a sale happens or not, the lofty valuations placed on these assets seems to fly in the face of tradition. It used to be that a company had to accumulate a big library, establish a proven track record of hits and have a management team that could practically foretell the future before attracting Lotto-type valuations. Now, in the streaming era, that model is quickly becoming obsolete.

In his research report, Venkateshwar notes that every content library is valued differently, and rightly so. Volume alone doesn’t determine value, but the analyst said another factor -- distribution channels -- also is rising in the mix. But Venkateshwar added it isn’t the number of distribution channels available to a piece of content that determines its value, but the type of distribution.

“Unlike legacy channels for content distribution which were purely focused on content alone, today, the consumer value proposition of a given content distribution channel may actually have nothing to do with content,” Venkateshwar wrote. “In fact, the value of content may ironically be higher in channels where content is only a secondary offering, unlike the past where the more focused a distribution channel was on content, the more it could charge (theatrical, TV bundle etc.).”

He used Amazon’s Prime Video offering as an example. While Prime Video has a lot of content -- which should increase after Amazon agreed in May to buy movie studio MGM at a price ($8.5 billion) some have estimated is 37 times its annualized cash flow -- it’s main function is to serve as a complement to the Amazon Prime service, which offers customers free shipping on their Amazon retail orders. According to Venkateshwar, the real value of the video offering is in its ability to increase the value of the platform as a whole.

“Other emerging content distributors like Apple are also more oriented to use content to enhance the value of their broader platforms rather than as an end in itself,” Venkateshwar wrote, adding that the same holds true for audio, which has taken advantage of new distribution channels like Peloton, Fortnite and Tik Tok which is becoming an increasingly important driver for music labels.

“However, not every new distribution channel is a platform and therefore most new streaming services will have to justify the economics of a given piece of content or a library based on its ability to drive subscriber growth, engagement or pricing power. This is why it may make more sense for Netflix to spend $8 billion-plus on creating more local language programming across its footprint rather than buying a company like MGM.”

Specific windows for theatrical, pay per view, premium, cable and broadcast content were also a key factor in the way programming was valued previously. But streaming threw theatrical windowing, well, out the window as distributors either ignored them totally, like Netflix, or created a new day-and-date release strategy for movies like Disney Plus.

While Venkateshwar wrote that the new strategy could be good for consumers, who can switch between distributors for specific content without penalty, it ultimately will hurt lifetime valuations for that content.

The analyst pointed to Disney’s latest day-and-date release, Black Widow. While that film had a strong opening box office weekend of $80 million in North America and generated more than $60 million for Disney Plus, the drop off in box office after opening day (40%) was significantly greater for Black Widow than any other Marvel film, Venkateshwar said.

“Therefore, what will be interesting to watch is the overall collection for Black Widow across its entire theatrical and Disney Plus run and its impact on Disney Plus sub growth once the movie hits the normal subscription window (although Disney may not make these numbers available),” Venkateshwar wrote.

The elimination of multiple windows also could affect the cultural import of certain content, the analyst said, wondering aloud if Star Wars would have been as culturally significant over the past several decades if it had been released exclusively on Netflix rather than in theaters. Venkateshwar argues that marketing plays a huge role in not only promoting films but letting potential viewers cut through the clutter to discover programming they want to watch.

“A movie release tends to be akin to a high-profile new product launch, with franchise movies spending $100 million-plus on marketing alone,” Venkateshwar wrote. “Netflix’s movie releases, on the other hand, rely significantly on its own content discovery algorithms. While the latter may be more efficient in the short term, it limits the duration of cultural relevance of a given piece of content, especially in a world with significant content clutter. This is why we believe Netflix’s strategy of shunning theatrical windows may drive a lower return on investment for its franchises than, say, Disney.”

Venkateshwar goes on to consider ad-supported streaming (best to monetize library content) and the benefits of binge-watching (which highlights the value of original programming), but it all boils down to the fact that valuing content is hard. And you can’t point to one deal or even a series of deals as a blueprint for the rest of the business. So Lebron James and Reese Witherspoon may indeed have hit the content lottery with their respective content endeavors, or maybe not. Amazon may be spending too much on MGM -- there is still the question of regulatory approval -- or it may end up being considered a bargain 10 years down the road. Venkateshwar pointed to how many analysts thought Disney paid way too much for Pixar and Marvel back in the day.

The key, he wrote, is being willing to continually reinvest in what you buy, no matter the price. Buying a studio or a production company or what have you has to be the start of the investment cycle, not the end.

“In hindsight, however, the last decade of Disney’s growth including its streaming pivot and therefore its valuation has largely been fueled by these anchor assets,” Venkateshwar wrote of Pixar and Marvel “Valuation context, in other words, is a function of the post-deal strategic path of these assets more than a point in time estimate of asset value of a given studio.”
