Showtime will not bring back its Vanessa Bayer-created comedy series I Love That For You for a second season.

The series, which debuted in May 2022, starred Bayer (a Saturday Night Live former cast member) as a childhood leukemia survivor who chases her lifelong dream of becoming a home shopping channel host. Along with Bayer, the series also starred Molly Shannon, Jenifer Lewis, Paul James, Ayden Mayeri and Matt Rogers.

Executive producers for I Love That for You include Bayer, Jeremy Beiler, Jessi Klein, Michael Showalter, Megan Ellison, Sue Naegle, Jordana Mollick and Allyce Ozarski. 

“I Love That For You has completed its run on Showtime,” the network said in a press statement. “We want to thank Vanessa, Jeremy and Jessi, along with the incredible cast and crew for their hard work and wish them the best going forward.” 

I Love That For You is the latest scripted series to be canceled by Showtime under new network head Chris McCarthy, following The L Word: Generation Q, American Gigolo and Let The Right One In. Showtime is set to be integrated into the Paramount Plus streaming service on June 27.

High profile returning series from HBO Max and Showtime highlight the shows premiering this week on cable and streaming services.

The sophomore campaign of HBO Max’s The Sex Lives of College Girls debuts November 17 and continues to follow the lives of four college roommates attending a prestigious New England college, according to the streaming service.

Showtime on November 20 will premiere the third season of The L Word: Generation Q  -- the sequel series from the pay service’s The L Word show that aired from 2004 to 2009 -- which follows the exploits of a group of Los Angeles-based friends.

Showtime will bring back its drama series The L Word: Generation Q for a third season, the network said Friday.

The show, a sequel to the The L Word series that ran on Showtime from 2004 to 2009, will continue to follow the intermingled lives of characters as they experience love, heartbreak, sex, setbacks and success in Los Angeles, the network said. The series stars Jennifer Beals, Leisha Hailey, Katherine Moennig, Arienne Mandi, Leo Sheng, Jacqueline Toboni, Rosanny Zayas, Sepideh Moafi and Jordan Hull. 

According to Showtime, season two found Bette (Beals) dealing with Tina (guest star Laurel Holloman) and Carrie’s (guest star Rosie O’Donnell) engagement, and daughter Angie’s (Hull) search for her birth father; Shane (Moennig) while ramping up her business and her feelings for Tess (Jamie Clayton). Meanwhile, a newly single Dani (Mandi) leaned on Gigi (Moafi) during her father’s trial; Finley (Toboni) and Sophie (Zayas) tried hard to make it work despite Finley’s spiraling addiction; and friends Micah (Sheng) and Maribel (Jillian Mercado) fell hard for each other.  

The L Word: Generation Q season three will be executive produced by Beals, Moennig and Hailey, along with Marja-Lewis Ryan, series creator Ilene Chaiken, Kristen Campo, Allyce Ozarski and Melody DerloshonIn. ■

The return of Showtime's The L Word: Generation Q leads the list of new shows, documentaries and movies debuting on cable and streaming services during the first week of August.

The second season of Showtime's The L Word spinoff debuts Aug. 8. The L Word:  Generation Q stars Jennifer Beals, Kate Moennig and Leisha Hailey. 

On the movie front, HBO Max will debut on Aug. 6 The Suicide Squad, a sequel to the 2016 Suicide Squad film starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman and Viola Davis. Robbie, Kinnaman, Courtney and Davis return for the sequel, which also features Idris Elba and John Cena. The movie will debut on HBO Max at the same time it hits theaters.

Showtime will offer the first episode of The L Word: Generation Q season two on streaming and on demand for subscribers Friday Aug. 6, before the season premieres Aug. 8. Each episode of the new season will be available on Fridays to stream on demand. 

The first five episodes will air Sunday nights on Showtime, and the final five air Monday nights. The season concludes Oct. 11. 

Generation Q is based on the drama The L Word. It follows the intermingled lives of Bette Porter (Jennifer Beals), Shane McCutcheon (Katherine Moennig), Alice Pieszecki (Leisha Hailey), Dani Nùñez (Arienne Mandi), Micah Lee (Leo Sheng), Sarah Finley (Jacqueline Toboni), Sophie Suarez (Rosanny Zayas), Gigi Ghorbani (Sepideh Moafi) and Angelica Porter-Kennard (Jordan Hull) as they experience love, heartbreak, setbacks and success in L.A.

The first week of December will feature the return of several veteran series including Emmy winning show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, as well as a sequel of Showtime drama series The L Word.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will debut its third season Dec. 6 on Prime Video with actress Rachel Brosnahan and Tony Shalhoub reprising their Emmy-winning roles.

Other shows returning this week include Netflix’s Fuller House for its fifth and final season (Dec. 6) and History's Vikings for its sixth and final season (Dec. 4).

On the new series front, Showtime will resurrect its drama series The L Word for a new series run. The Dec. 8 premiere of The L Word: Generation Q will feature Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig (pictured) and Leisha Hailey reprising their roles from the original series, which ran on Showtime from 2004-2009.

A&E presents Garth Brooks: The Road I’m On, a two-part Biography special that starts Monday, Dec. 2. It’s a close-up of Brooks as a musician, a father and a man. It shows the guy playing the college bars as a young man in Oklahoma, and moving on to becoming a global superstar.

Director Al Syzmanski describes himself as a giant music fan, but he hadn’t really tackled a musical project like this before. “I felt like I found one of those golden tickets,” he said.

He admitted to just a “cursory knowledge” of Brooks’s music before taking on The Road I’m On. “For me, this was as much a journey of discovery as it hopefully is for the viewer,” said Syzmanski.

During an initial meet-and-greet to discuss the project, Syzmanski asked the singer about the handlers who would take care of every trifling request for a photo or article or phone number. “I guess that’s me,” Brooks answered.

Syzmanski asked the question again, in a slightly different manner. Brooks reiterated that he would handle all the minutia.

And he did.

“He proved true to his word,” Syzmanski said.

Musicians offering their take on Brooks in the film include Trisha Yearwood, Billy Joel and James Taylor. Syzmanski spoke about Keith Urban turning up for a Brooks studio session, playing his part, then seeing Brooks haul Urban’s amp out to Urban’s car. “That was such an insight into the character of Garth,” Syzmanski said.

Brooks’s three daughters, Taylor, August and Allie, are in the documentary too, and really make their mark. “They are un-frickin-believable,” said Syzmanski.

The director came away from The Road I’m On with a whole new level of respect for Brooks. “I have a huge appreciation for what he does musically,” Syzmanski said. “But I’m a much, much bigger fan of the man. He’s an impressive cat.”

The L Word: Generation Q is on Showtime Sunday, Dec. 8. The original aired on Showtime 2004 to 2009.

“To say that this show is a labor of love is an understatement,” Gary Levine, Showtime entertainment president, said at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour. “We are so thrilled with [showrunner] Marja‑Lewis Ryan’s inspired take on this groundbreaking series, and the beautiful way she has blended the best of the original with an exciting new point of view.”

Ilene Chaiken, exec producer, noted that the world has changed in the decade since The L Word went off the air, “and lesbians still belong on television.”

“We’re telling the stories about what’s happened in those 10 years,” she added. “Where we are now, and where we’re headed.”
