Fox News talk program The Five marks 10 years on the air on July 11. Dana Perino, Greg Gutfeld and Jesse Watters co-host, and Juan Williams departed the program in late May. Perino mentioned how the show launched as a five-week temporary program, so no one could’ve imagined it still being on in 2021.

“We’ve done a lot, been through a lot of stories,” said Perino, who was White House press secretary under President George W. Bush. “We’ve all grown professionally and personally.”

The hosts get more comfortable in their roles on the 5 p.m. show every day, according to Gutfeld, who launched a late-night show called Gutfeld! in April. “We’ve gotten looser and more surprising as we get more comfortable with ourselves,” he said. “There’s no difference between the way we are on that table and the way we are off the table.”

“I’m just as cranky and annoying,” Gutfeld added.

Perino credited Gutfeld for helping her find her voice. As a professional spokesperson, she said she rarely spoke what was on her own mind. “I never really expressed my personal opinion about policy, and policies in my life,” she said. “Greg helped me come out of my shell.”

She mentioned a discussion on the program years ago about legalizing marijuana. Gutfeld asked Perino what she thought, and she defaulted to talking points from her time in the Bush camp. Gutfeld pushed back. “He said, no, what do you think?” said Perino. “I felt like I was on a high wire without a net.”

Jesse Watters came on the show four years ago, so most of his time on The Five was during the Trump presidency. “The Trump term for The Five, I would call it eventful,” he said. “Every day was a blockbuster. There was never a dearth of content. Sometimes the rundown would change midday, depending on what Trump would say about people, what people would say about Trump.”

It’s different now. “We’re covering a president who doesn’t make news,” Watters said of President Biden, adding that Biden “doesn’t say much, doesn’t do much — it’s his political strategy.”

The show has pivoted with the White House change, he added. “It’s more cultural, more policy from different angles,” said Watters.

The hosts went remote due to the pandemic in the spring of 2020, with Williams in a van in front of his home in Washington, Perino at home in New Jersey, and Watters at a Jersey beach house. Gutfeld, for the most part, still came into the Manhattan headquarters. A guest host fills out the five on The Five.

They returned to the set June 1, a vital arrangement for a show built on host chemistry. “It means everything,” said Gutfeld. “The show wasn’t The Five when we were remote.”

It was a fun show, he added, but a different show.

Hosts talk about eye contact and body language when on the set together, aspects that were almost impossible to factor in when remote. “There’s an ease and flow of conversation you can’t get when you’re in separate rooms,” said Perino.

Perino said of the show’s chemistry, “you can’t manufacture it. You have it or you don’t.”

Watters said he was initially happy to be at his beach house, but is pleased to be back on the set with his co-hosts. “Conversations are more conversational,” he said. “It’s less delivering monologues and staring at the screen.”

The co-host chemistry is built on the set. They don’t hang out outside of work, according to Gutfeld. “Jesse has his kids, Dana has her dogs, and I have my collection of fine cheeses,” he quipped.

The program garners a substantial audience. The Five averaged 2.6 million total viewers in the second quarter, and 385,000 in the 25-54 demo.

Williams was the liberal voice on The Five. A rotating group of co-hosts are filling in until a replacement is named. Jessica Tarlov, Harold Ford Jr. and Geraldo Rivera have appeared.

The new host will push the current ones to consider new concepts. “Someone who has great energy and a fun attitude,” said Perino. “Someone who has smart things to say that challenges people’s thinking, including my own.”

Watters said Williams “played a critical role.”

“It was fun to have someone to bounce things off and argue with and try to persuade,” he added. “Though I’m not sure I persuaded him on anything.”

In terms of highlights across the tenure of The Five, Watters mentions road trips, such as doing the show from Miami during Super Bowl weekend and Nashville. Perino brings up the closing “One More Thing” segments, and road trips as well. Gutfeld mentioned any time Perino swears, faces Watters makes when he feels like he said “something awful”, and the time Gutfeld did the show with a knot on the head after being hit by a door just before the day’s program began.

Can The Five go another 10? The hosts hope so. “We didn’t even think it would go ten weeks,” said Gutfeld. “The fact that we’re having this conversation is almost surreal. It could go another ten years, who knows?”

As an accomplished TV news journalist, radio host, newspaper reporter and author, Fox News on-air host Juan Williams has participated in an industry’s slow evolution toward greater inclusion and acceptance of diverse images and viewpoints over his career of more than five decades.

Currently co-host of Fox News Channel’s political news program The Five, Williams has offered a unique perspective on breaking news and current events since joining the then-nascent network in 1997.

Williams, who has authored books about the African-American experience including Eyes on the Prize: America’s Civil Rights Years, 1954-1965 and Thurgood Marshall: American Revolutionary, will be honored at the CultureX Conversations event (March 16) for Talent Reflection of Inclusion in Television.

CultureX Awards: Starz Shows the Power of Diversity | Google’s Juanjo Duran: Leveling the Playing Field for Diverse Programming | Viewers See More of Themselves in ‘Access Hollywood’

In an interview, Williams said he was recently reminded that the industry still has a ways to go in its diversity efforts. In 2020, PBS initially invited Williams to speak as part of a show about that summer’s racial protests following the May death of George Floyd. Before he could respond to the invitation, it was withdrawn, because the producer felt Williams’s Panamanian ancestry excluded him from the African American centered conversation.

“If someone who has written best-selling books on this very topic, regardless of the person’s birthplace, you would think that’s a source of information and perspective,” Williams said. “Yet here you have a white PBS host turning away from somebody on the basis of their birthplace. It’s just bizarre.”

Juan Williams

Role: Fox News political analyst, Co-host of Fox News Channel's The Five

Company: Fox News Channel

Award: Talent Reflection of Inclusion in Television

Why They’re Being Honored: Juan Williams has been a consistent voice for rational thinking as it applies to inclusion on-air, especially in his coverage of public affairs stories.

Progress Proceeding Slowly

Williams does feel the media business has become more diverse, with more change on the way.

“I’m 66 years old now, so I’ve seen a lot of transitions,” he said. “It’s almost like Forrest Gump — he finds himself at various moments in history and these transitions. There’s been a tremendous transition since I started on the print side as an intern at the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin. When we think about race and ethnic diversity in terms of staffing, it’s been an incredible shift.”

Prior to Fox News, Williams worked for a decade at National Public Radio after working 23 years as a writer for The Washington Post.

“When I was coming along, if you saw someone like [syndicated news host] Tony Brown, it really stood out, because there was just about no one else,” Williams recalled. “That was true on the local and national news side.”

More CultureX Conversations: ‘CultureX’ to Celebrate Diversity, Inclusion | Byron Allen Wants to Save the World | Charting the Course of TV Representation

‘Change Is Coming’

“Change has come in very small increments, but it is coming,” Williams said. “It’s something that’s been difficult, because America media is a power base, and it's hard for people to welcome newcomers to power and to cede power, and information is power. Part of that information is what the person who is giving you that information is saying, what he looks like and what their perspective on the news is. This is all part of what I call the changing face of America.”

He agreed with the premise that he, as a person of color and having a more liberal leaning political perspective, has helped expand the Fox News audience.

“I think there’s no doubt about it, and I have some interesting ways of judging that fact,” Williams said. “I’m a real human being. I go outside, go to church, to the ballgame, pass through the train station, go to the airport and to the grocery store. So people, especially Fox News’s most ardent viewers, come up to me and say ‘I don't agree with you, but I like you.’ This is so interesting. It’s like I am given permission in their mind to come into their home, and I am an alternative point of view that they value. To me this is tremendous because it means I have some value in the overall package that is Fox News.

A Fox News on-air personality since 1997, Juan Williams is well-established in Washington both personally and professionally.

“The second part of that is I run into minorities who have a liberal political perspective and maybe don’t watch Fox News often, but what they say is, ‘Thank God you’re there. I’m glad someone is there to challenge people and to raise another point of view.’

“The demographics of the country are undergoing a tremendous shift,” Williams observed. “I think now the census has it at about 40% of the American population made up of people of color and heading higher. We've never been there before. If you look at the young people in the country, disproportionately over 50% of people under 18 are people of color, which is a huge audience.

“So if you look at everything from movies to news to television and music, you see that increasingly the successful organizations are the ones satisfying a more diverse market and population.

“When we come out of this pandemic phase and start getting open again — especially in the aftermath of what happened last summer — I think now we are compelled in terms of business interests to do a better job of representing different perspectives with this increasingly Fox News diverse demographic.”

Fox News Channel daily show The Five, featuring five co-hosts discussing the news of the day, is built on the banter of its personalities. But in this work-from-home time, the remote talent has to work a bit harder to make the banter happen.

“What makes The Five a success is the chemistry, the back and forth,” said co-host Greg Gutfeld. “It’s what people come to see. If we’re not in the same room, it reduces our ability to read faces and moods.”

Co-host Juan Williams sets up in a van parked in front of his home in Washington, D.C. Co-host Dana Perino is working out of a bedroom in her New Jersey home. Jesse Watters, also a co-host, is in a beach house in New Jersey.

Jesse Watters of 'The Five' has been handling hosting duties from a house at the Jersey Shore.

Gutfeld is actually schlepping to the midtown Manhattan studio each day. He sports a mask heading into and out of the office every day, washes his hands “like a crazy person,” he said, and does not socialize with co-workers.

“I like to go to the office every day,” Gutfeld said. “I really do enjoy leaving the house and going in.”

Executive producer Megan Albano is also working out of the Fox News headquarters.

Keeping Busy at Home

Williams mentioned an “ordinary white van” that pulls up in front of his house each day around 2:30 or 3 p.m. Since late March, he’s been climbing in for the 5 p.m. show.

Williams normally spends Monday-Friday in New York to shoot The Five. In the days after the coronavirus took hold, Williams would go to Fox’s Washington bureau each day. Recently turning 66, he said, “I don’t think there’s any reason for me to have unnecessary exposure.”

Perino has been working from home since March 23. She shoots The Daily Briefing with Dana Perino at 2 p.m., reads to children for the online segment “Story Time with Dana Perino,” shoots The Five at 5 p.m. and records a podcast. She upgraded her house’s WiFi to accommodate both her and her husband working from home.

Some viewers have noticed the train that zooms by near her house, tooting its horn.

“I’ve actually been able to fulfill all of my responsibilities in a pretty seamless way,” Perino said.

Watters began working from home last week. One hitch saw the show start without Watters, who was having WiFi issues. That worked out after a few minutes. Garbage bags are used to keep the sunlight out of the house. Watters got some laughs on the program last week when he revealed his pink shorts along with a suit jacket and tie.

“It’s a beachy vibe, but it works pretty well,” he said of his home studio.

Besides enjoying going to work, Gutfeld noted how pretty much everything works once he gets there. Garbage bags are not needed in the windows at 1211 Avenue of the Americas. “Everything is there, and you know it’s going to work,” he said.

In a nod to social distancing, Albano said the show shot on two floors in mid-March. Today, two control rooms dictate the action.

Much of the public has become accustomed to Zoom meetings and social gatherings since the pandemic took over, and the funky delays that make conversing challenging. Albano calls the remote hosts on The Five “a real-life scenario.”

The hosts deal with a one- to two-second delay that can make the quick quips a bit harder to deliver. “It’s just not as smooth,” Albano said.

Watters described not being able to read body language from home. “Our show is built around banter, around our close proximity on the set,” he said. “With a two-second delay, the quick retorts don’t translate as well.”

Perino, for her part, mentioned “verbal bumper cars” at times taking place.

The awkward pauses aside, Williams said the remote setup and its delays have pushed everyone to be a better listener. “We’re forced to listen to each other more intently,” he said.

More Viewers Tuning in

Ratings for The Five have skyrocketed. The 5 p.m. hour is challenging from those who work 9 to 5, but most of those folks are stuck in their homes. “People are home, and they’re invested in the story,” Albano said. “Hopefully they get some comfort in watching The Five.”

The show averaged 3.87 million total viewers in March, up 53% from March 2019. Daily briefings from President Donald Trump have helped ratings too.

Inconveniences aside, the hosts of The Five said they’re happy to be working with so many layoffs across the country. “We’re incredibly lucky to be working,” said Gutfeld.

They hope they add a bit of levity to viewers’ lives at this trying time. “We try to make everyone else’s lives at home a little less boring,” Gutfeld said.

Their conversation with R. Thomas Umstead of Multichannel News followed Univision anchor Maria Alena Salinas saying the presidential election’s surprising outcome left many people “crying and afraid.”

Guilfoyle, who has more of a conservative bent than Williams on the show, said the media has a chance to improve on how the country is covered with lessons learned from Donald Trump’s victory. “There is room for growth in all of us and across all of these platforms, to be able to make sure that we are hearing each other, that we are understanding exactly what’s going on across the country. So that people don’t wake up on election day and say, ‘Wait, what just happened? We weren’t prepared for it. We didn’t understand. There wasn’t a dialogue there, or there wasn’t the coverage to show perhaps how this evolved and what occurred.’ ”

Guilfoyle also said it would be helpful for the president-elect to “reach out to these communities that did feel that they were disenfranchised or being singled out” in the election.

She said she and Williams “I think … both remain optimistic and positive” Trump will take that opportunity.

Williams said formats like The Five in which people of differing viewpoints talk, debate and have “legitimate discourse that could lead to common understanding” can help at a time when people turn to information and opinion sources that support their own views (and prejudices). “What’s critical is in the midst of that that they would be able to hear a different idea, a different story, a different perception,” Williams said.

Viewers tend to tune to Fox News longer than other channels, which Williams said was “because they want to hear the end of the story,” equivalent to a “driveway moment” at his former employer, NPR.
