Comedy Central’s The Daily Show With Jon Stewart announced Sunday that it will not broadcast a show on Monday and canceled plans to originate in Milwaukee during the Republican National Convention following the shooting of former President Donald Trump.

In a social media post, The Daily Show said its Indedecision 2024 coverage will resume Tuesday through Thursday, but emanate from its studio in New York.

“Our apologies for the inconvenience, but due to logistical issues and the evolving situation in Milwaukee, we need to reschedule our events on the ground in Wisconsin and will look to make those up in the coming weeks.”

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, crews were seen moving equipment from the Marcus Center in Milwaukee and loading it onto trucks.

The Daily Show also canceled a Sunday event called “Indogcision 2024,” where voter registration and pet adoption would both be promoted at a Milwaukee park, the paper said.

Trump has been the subject of jokes on many of the TV late-night shows and it remains to be seen how the assassination attempt affects comedians and humor between now and the election.

Comedy Central's desperate search to replace Jon Stewart's replacement has ended at the feet of Stewart himself.

The 61-year-old comedian, who famously hosted Comedy Central’s The Daily Show for 16 years until ceding the post to Trevor Noah in 2015, will return to oversee the program as executive producer through the 2024 election cycle. Stewart will also serve as host on Monday nights.

Paramount Global’s re-signing of Stewart isn't just a win for the fading Comedy Central linear brand, but also the company's emerging Paramount Plus streaming platform, which will feature The Daily Show as a tentpole asset. 

Stewart confirmed Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios' announcement Wednesday morning with this tweet:

“Stewart is the voice of our generation, and we are honored to have him return to Comedy Central’s The Daily Show to help us all make sense of the insanity and division roiling the country as we enter the election season,” Chris McCarthy, chief executive of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios, said in a statement.

“In our age of staggering hypocrisy and performative politics, Jon is the perfect person to puncture the empty rhetoric and provide much-needed clarity with his brilliant wit," McCarthy added.

Noah received broad critical acclaim amid his seven-year, er, stewardship of The Daily Show, but the talk show lacked the zeitgeist-bending power it enjoyed under Stewart. 

Comedy Central had been rolling with a rotating ensemble of Daily Show hosts since Noah left the program in October 2022. 

Stewart, meanwhile, veered into the more serious, topical hourlong show The Problem With Jon Stewart in 2020 on Apple TV Plus. However, that relationship came undone in October, with Stewart departing over reported creative differences.

Kal Penn takes his turn guest hosting The Daily Show December 11-14. The Comedy Central show has had an array of guest hosts, including John Leguizamo, Chelsea Handler and Sarah Silverman, since Trevor Noah stepped down as host at the end of 2022. No permanent host has been named. 

Penn’s TV credits include House, Designated Survivor and Clarice. His film work includes the Harold & Kumar comedy franchise. He previously was the Daily Show guest host in March, when he sat with President Joe Biden. 

It wasn’t Penn’s first time chatting with a president. He was President Barack Obama’s associate director of the White House Office of Public Engagement from 2009 to 2011.

Penn interviews filmmaker Zoya Akhtar December 11 and comedian Vir Das December 12. On December 13, Penn sits with Mike Massimino, former astronaut and author of Moonshot: A NASA Astronaut’s Guide to Achieving the Impossible. December 14, Taraji P. Henson is on to talk about The Color Purple.

Comedian Michelle Wolf will guest host Comedy Central’s The Daily Show during the week of November 27-30. 

Wolf has worked in the past as a writer and contributor to The Daily Show, as well as as a writer and performer on Late Night With Seth Meyers. She hosted the variety/sketch series The Break with Michelle Wolf on Netflix and the 2018 White House Correspondents’ Dinner. 

Wolf sits with comedian and actor Eric Andre November 27 and actor Da’Vine Joy Randolph on November 28. MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan is on November 29 and Dr. Stu Fischbein is the guest on November 30.

Trevor Noah departed as host in 2022 and an array of guest hosts, including Al Franken, Chelsea Handler, John Leguizamo and Sarah Silverman, have helmed the show since. Last week saw a “News Team Takeover,” with the show’s news team, including Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta and Desi Lydic, filling in as guest hosts. 

Leslie Jones is the guest host on The Daily Show the for week of November 13-16. Her guest Monday, November 13 is Lisa Leslie, WNBA superstar. Steve Kornacki, NBC News and MSNBC national political correspondent, is the guest on November 14. On November 15, it’s Allyson Felix, Olympic gold medalist in track and field, and co-founder and president of women’s footwear brand Saysh. On Thursday, November 16, Jones chats with Taika Waititi, director of movie Next Goal Wins.

Jones was on Saturday Night Live from 2014 to 2019, and hosted Supermarket Sweep on ABC and MTV's Movie & TV Awards. Her film work includes Top Five, Trainwreck and Ghostbusters.  

The Daily Show airs on Comedy Central at 11 p.m. ET/PT weeknights. 

Since Trevor Noah signed off as Daily Show host, a number of guest hosts, including Al Franken, Chelsea Handler, DL Hughley, John Leguizamo and Kal Penn, have taken a turn as guest host. Sarah Silverman did the job last week, following Charlamagne tha God. No permanent host has been named.

With the strike over and Writers Guild of America members OKed to return to work, Paramount Global’s Comedy Central said The Daily Show will return with new episodes on October 16.

The show will feature guest hosts through the end of 2023, Comedy Central said. A new permanent host will take over the anchor desk in 2024.

Trevor Noah signed off as host of The Daily Show in December after 7 years. He succeeded Jon Stewart.

Since Noah left, The Daily Show has had a rotating cast of guest hosts, including Leslie Jones, Cedric the Entertainer, Al Franken, Chelsea Handler, DL Hughley, John Leguizamo, Hassan Minhaj, Kal Penn, Sarah Silverman, Marlon Wayans and Roy Wood Jr.

With the Screen Actors Guild still on strike, talk shows and late-night shows are expected to return before scripted programming as they’re covered by the union’s network code. It is unlikely that actors will appear on talk shows before their strike is settled.

Roy Wood Jr. takes over as guest host on The Daily Show April 3, helming the Comedy Central show through April 6. Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) sits with Wood April 3, Robin Thede does so April 4, Cedric the Entertainer hangs out with Wood April 5 and author Jerry Craft is on April 6. 

Wood is a correspondent on The Daily Show, which he joined in 2015. His producing credits include PBS documentary The Neutral Ground and an as-yet-untitled comedy about the National Guard at Fox. His first stand-up special at Comedy Central came in 2017 and was called Father Figure. 

John Leguizamo was the guest host last week. Al Franken was the guest host the week before, and before him, the guest hosts included Kal Penn, Marlon Wayans, Hasan Minhaj, Chelsea Handler, Wanda Sykes, Sarah Silverman and D.L. Hughley. 

Trevor Noah hosted The Daily Show from 2015 through December 2022.

John Leguizamo is the guest host this week on The Daily Show. Leguizamo sits with CNN political commentator Ana Navarro March 27, actor and activist Diane Guerrero March 28, rapper Princess Nokia March 29 and Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) March 30. 

Born in Colombia, Leguizamo’s film work includes John Wick, Moulin Rouge!, Summer of Sam and The Menu. His work on Broadway includes the one-man show John Leguizamo: Freak. Spike Lee directed a film based on Freak.

President Joe Biden turns up on The Daily Show March 13. Kal Penn is the guest host. Comedy Central promises “an in-depth interview.”

The show runs at 11 p.m. ET/PT. 

It is Biden’s first interview on The Daily Show since becoming president. Biden and Penn discuss same-sex marriage, among other topics. The president shares his “epiphany” on the topic, dating back to high school, when he saw two men kiss as his father dropped him off at school, and his father said, “Joey, it’s simple — they love each other.”

Penn, whose credits include the Harold & Kumar movie franchise and TV shows House and Designated Survivor, worked in the White House during the Obama administration as associate director of the White House office of public engagement. 

Penn the guest host on the show this week. Also lined up as guest hosts are Al Franken and John Leguizamo. Marlon Wayans, Chelsea Handler, Wanda Sykes, Sarah Silverman and D.L. Hughley have also been guest hosts on The Daily Show since Trevor Noah stepped down at the end of 2022.

In his last episode Thursday night as host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Noah thanked his audience and black women, who raised him and educated him about America and the world.

Noah noted that when he started, there were days when it was hard to fill the studio.

"If you want to know about America, talk to black women," he went on to say. "Black women understand how bad it is when things go bad … Black people know that when things go bad it goes worse for them."

Noah suddenly announced he was leaving the show in September after seven seasons.

This week Comedy Central said The Daily Show will have guest hosts starting January 17. The guest hosts include Al Franken, Chelsea Handler, D. L. Hughley, Leslie Jones, John Leguizamo, Hasan Minhaj, Kal Penn, Sarah Silverman, Wanda Sykes and Marlon Wayans.

Some Daily Show correspondents and contributors will also take turns as host.

Comedy Central said that Trevor Noah's last day hosting The Daily Show will be December 8.

Two weeks ago, Noah abruptly announced he would be leaving the franchise after a seven-year run.

Paramount's Comedy Central channel cryptically announced that the franchise will return with a "reinvented" version on January 17, but said details -- including a new host -- would be released sometime in the future.

"Trevor is an incredible talent who has left an indelible mark on The Daily Show and we're grateful for his creative partnership over the past seven years," said Chris McCarthy, president & CEO, Paramount Media Networks and MTV Entertainment Studios.

Leading up to Noah's last show, Comedy Central will be looking back at Noah's best moments, starting December 5.

With cord-cutting and the collapse of basic cable, viewership of The Daily Show has dipped to under 400,000 viewers. In Jon Stewart's final season with The Daily Show, it averaged 1.3 million viewers.

"Chris has been an amazing leader and partner who has helped me realize my dream of working not just in front of the camera, but also behind the scenes, producing content which now airs across the Paramount family," said Trevor Noah.
"I'm truly excited to see what the future holds."

The Daily Show airs weeknights at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT on Comedy Central and is available the following morning on the Paramount Plus streaming service.

Trevor Noah is leaving The Daily Show after seven years of hosting Comedy Central’s signature late-night show.

The comedian, who took over as host of the late-night show from Jon Stewart in 2015, made the announcement during the taping of Thursday night’s program, saying that his “time is up.”

“I find myself filled with gratitude for the journey,” Noah said to the audience during the taping, in a statement released prior to the show’s airing. “It’s been absolutely amazing and something that I never expected. We’ve laughed together, we've cried together, but after seven years I feel like it’s time.”

There is no timetable set for Noah's departure, according to Comedy Central.

“We are grateful to Trevor for our amazing partnership over the past seven years,” the network said in a statement. “With no timetable for his departure, we’re working together on next steps. As we look ahead, we’re excited for the next chapter in the 25-plus year history of The Daily Show as it continues to redefine culture through sharp and hilarious social commentary, helping audiences make sense of the world around them.”

During Noah”s tenure, the show was nominated for several Emmy Awards, including a 2022 Emmy for Outstanding Variety Talk Series. Along with Noah, the series featured correspondents Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta, Desi Lydic, Dulcé Sloan and Roy Wood Jr., along with contributors Lewis Black and Jordan Klepper.

Noah’s announced departure from cable’s late night stage follows the July cancellation of TBS’s late-night series Full Frontal with Samantha Bee after seven seasons. ■

The Trump presidency continues to redefine the role of the U.S. commander in chief. Congress still bickers like The Lockhorns. School shootings continue.

One cannot help but wonder where Jon Stewart is amidst all this madness. “In many ways, I think this an environment that’s made for Jon Stewart,” Magid senior vice president of global media and entertainment Mike Bloxham said.

Stewart signed off on The Daily Show in August 2015.

A few months later, he inked a four-year deal with HBO that was to include short-form content. Almost two years ago, Stewart and HBO said the digital shorts would not happen, citing technical issues.

In summer 2017, HBO said Stewart would do a couple of standup specials. A spokesperson said those are still in the works.

Stewart hosted autism benefit Night of Too Many Stars on HBO in November 2017. A longtime champion of Sept. 11 first responders, he appeared on Fox News Channel in February to discuss the Never Forget the Heroes Act. He will direct a political satire film called Irresistible.

Stewart still has a hand in late night. He’s an executive producer on CBS’s The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Samantha Bee, host of Full Frontal on TBS, was a Daily Show correspondent under Stewart, as was Wyatt Cenac of HBO’s Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas. “He’s got his fingerprints on quite a lot right now,” Bloxham said.

Amanda Lotz, media scholar and professor at Queensland University of Technology (Australia), feels Stewart “passed a torch” to other hosts, many of them Daily Show alums. “Not only to Trevor Noah,” she said, “but the formats of John Oliver’s and Hasan Minhaj’s shows [Last Week Tonight, Patriot Act] in many ways add more depth to the informational side of the info-comedy equation.”

New Comedy Central president Kent Alterman, who earlier this month took over for departing network head Michele Ganeless, inherits a network that has struggled of late from a ratings perspective but is being looked upon by Viacom CEO Philipe Duaman to help spur the company’s financial fortunes.

Alterman recently spoke to Multichannel News programming editor R. Thomas Umstead to discuss the network’s brand, its appeal to millennials and the struggles of its late-night franchises The Daily Show With Trevor Noah and The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore.

MCN: How would you define the Comedy Central brand?

Kent Alterman: I’ll start by how our audience defines it, which is that it’s the No. 1 brand in comedy across all platforms. For me, what unifies all of our talent and content that we put out there is that they bring a very distinct point of view and voice to what they do that generally shares some degree of relevance, intelligence and an ability to reflect the world back at our audience in a way that gives them a break from the world.

MCN: You’re coming in at a time when the network’s ratings have been declining for some time. How do you view the network’s ratings performances and what can be done to curtail viewership declines?

KA: The entire industry is facing the same challenges, especially in reaching our young millennial audience. Viewing behaviors are changing, so we’re pursuing dual tracks.

We’re tending to the linear ratings – our audience consumes original content, and reruns don’t mean so much anymore, so we’re looking at ways to have more and better content.

We’re also making sure that we not only make our content available on all platforms, but also that we’re creating original content that is conceived and executed with these different platforms in mind so that it feels more organic. We were the only entertainment channel to be part of Snapchat Discover and we’ve been doubling down on how much original content we’ve been creating for that platform. It also affords us a development pipeline in the sense of making more bets with emerging talent and having more ways to working with talent in general on different platforms so that we can open up the aperture of our talent development.

MCN: Having said that, what would you consider to be the network’s core shows?

KA: The good news for us is that we’ve been having this great run of shows like South Park, Tosh 2.0 and The Daily Show, which has been an institution. We don’t have Jon [Stewart] but we’re bullish on Trevor. The Daily Show under Trevor Noah is the No. 1 late night show with male millennials and second overall after [The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy] Fallon. It’s been experiencing several months of repeated growth, so all the signs are pointing the right way, and creatively Trevor is taking the ball and running with it – we’re really pleased with his evolution.

There are other shows that are incredibly popular including Broad City, Inside Amy Schumer, Drunk History, Another Period,Nikki Glazer and so on. Ultimately what we feel gratified by is that in the last several years we’ve had a great run in introducing new talent, and they are all resonating with our audience.

MCN: You mentioned The Daily Show, and obviously a lot has been written about the show’s declining ratings as well as those of The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore since Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert left the respective shows. From your perspective, how have those shows performed with their new hosts and what if anything can be done to get ratings for the shows back to prior levels?

KA:  I think you have to look at a few things. It’s not like we replaced those shows at a time when there was stability in the marketplace of our business. It coincided with a period of incredible disruption in our business, and so its almost an unfair comparison; its not apples to apples. Even if you look at our late shows now and you include all the platforms where people are watching complete episodes – whether its on our website or our app or Hulu – the numbers are really significant, so it’s a tough comparison. What we care about the most is our fans and how [the shows] are resonating with our fans, and we try to keep our eye on that ball.

MCN: What are the biggest challenges the network is facing today?

KA: We’re living in a very tumultuous, disruptive time in our industry, and so I think we’re all facing the same challenges. No one knows how it's all going to settle out, and for the most part we try to keep our eye on what’s most important, which is our talent and our content. No matter what changes come in our industry, the thing that will never change is the importance of having content that resonates for our audience.

MCN: You mentioned programming for multiple platforms. How much does the digital platform influence the content development and distribution decisions you have to make?

KA: We’re trying to be very holistic about development and not so much separate linear with multiplatform distribution, but just continue to serve all masters simultaneously. We don’t just produce our content and then chop it up and distribute it on other platforms. We’re really expanding our aperture to work with different people and develop content that is targeted to different platforms because, ultimately, we are led more than anything else by our audience, and our audience is consuming content in different ways on different platforms, so we want to be able to meet them where they are.

Comedy Central Wednesday announced seveal additions to the lineup of its late night show The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.

Comedians Ronny Chieng, Desi Lydic and Roy Wood Jr. will serve as the newest correspondents to join the show under new host Noah when the series returns Sept. 28, said network officials. 

Chieng, Lydic and Wood will be joining the show's existing correspondents, including Jordan Klepper, Hasan Minhaj, Jessica Williams, Lewis Black, John Hodgman, Al Madrigal, Aasif Mandvi and Kristen Schaal, said Comedy Central.

 “I’m so excited to welcome these new members of the Daily Show Team," said Noah in a statement. "Now I get to share my stress with other new people.”

Comedy Central Wednesday released a new video spot touting incoming The Daily Show’ host Trevor Noah as he prepares for his Sept. 28 debut.

The South African-born Noah will take over for former The Daily Show host Jon Stewart, who retired earlier this month after 16 seasons.

Cable shows and specials led by Fox News’ Republican Presidential Candidate Debate dominated last week’s Twitter TV Ratings, according to Nielsen.

Thursday’s Republican Debate – which generated 24 million viewers -- drew more than 3 million Tweets that reached more than 9.2 million unique Twitter users to top all TV shows for the period of Aug. 3 to Aug. 9, said Nielsen.

Jon Stewart’s final episode as host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show on Aug. 6 drew 233,000 tweets across 4.2 million Twitter users to finished second for the week. Overall, the show generated 3.5 million viewers. 

ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars, USA Network’s WWE Monday Night Raw and HBO’s True Detective finish among the top five series and specials for the week, according to Nielsen.

New Daily Show host Trevor Noah says he will bring a different perspective to the late night show, but will not look to make a major overhaul.

Noah, who spoke during Comedy Central’s Television Critics Association press tour session Wednesday (July 29), said he will provide a different slant to stories than his predecessor, Jon Stewart, when he takes over for the longtime Daily Show host, but will not change the focus of the show.

The biracial 31-year old South African comedian said he draws his opinions from his life’s experiences, and perspectives will come through during the show, but he doesn’t plan to make any major changes to the look or the set.

“The way we tackle stories will be different,” Noah said.  “I still want the show to be recognized as The Daily Show.”

Kent Alterman, president of original programming for Comedy Central, told Multichannel News, “He is going to bring his point of view, but not imposing it in some way, but meshing it into the creative staff.”

Alterman said during the panel that the network “will be forever in debt” to Stewart for his stewardship of The Daily Show.

Following reports Monday morning, Comedy Central officially announced that Trevor Noah will succeed Jon Stewart as host of The Daily Show.

The little-known 31-year-old South African comedian will take over for Stewart later this year; Comedy Central will announce exactly when at a later date.

“Trevor Noah is an enormous talent. He has an insightful and unique point of view, and most importantly, is wickedly funny,” said Comedy Central president Michele Ganeless. “For the next host of The Daily Show, we set out to find a fresh voice who can speak to our audience with a keen take on the events of the day, and we found that in Trevor. He has a huge international following and is poised to explode here in America, and we are thrilled to have him join Comedy Central.”

Noah, 31, has only made three appearances on the show, having first debuted in December. Noah made his U.S. television debut in 2012 on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and also appeared on CBS's Late ShowWith David Letterman. Noah has hosted numerous television shows including his own late night talk show in South Africa, Tonight With Trevor Noah.

“It’s an honor to follow Jon Stewart. He and the team at The Daily Show have created an incredible show whose impact is felt all over the world,” Noah said. “In my brief time with the show they’ve made me feel so welcome. I’m excited to get started and work with such a fantastic group of people.”

Other potential successors to Stewart included Jason Jones and Samantha Bee, but each is bound for their own project with TBS. Jessica Williams, another young correspondent, had also pulled herself out of the running.

Comedian Jon Stewart is leaving Comedy Central's The Daily Show after nearly two decades as the host of late night series.

Comedy Central announced that Stewart's departure will come at the end of the year, leaving a big hole in the network's late night lineup.

Stewart also confirmed his departure during his show Tuesday night, saying the details of his final show have yet to be worked out. "It might be July, September, or December," he said.

Stewart's The Daily Show has become a late-night staple for the network, winning 20 Emmy Awards. It has also spawned several other shows including The Colbert Report, which ended last year after a nine-year run, and The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore, which launched last month.

Stewart took over as host of The Daily Show in 1999 from then host Craig Kilborn and built it into Comedy Central's most recognizable show, appealing to mostly young viewers with a comedic and satiric look at the news and issues of the day. During its run, The Daily Show showcased several comedians who have gone on to create higher profiles including Stephen Colbert, who will replace David Letterman on The Late Show this fall, and John Oliver, whose series Last Week Tonight With John Oliver premiered its sophomore season this past Sunday on HBO.

Stewart told NPR in 2014 that he's wrestled with how long to stay with the show, and its unclear what he will do after his The Daily Show run. In 2013 Stewart took an eight-week break to direct a feature fim, Rosewater. "I Got alot of ideas; I lot of things in my head," he said Tuesday night during The Daily Show.

Also unclear is whether The Daily Show will continue without Stewart. What is clear is that Comedy Central and its parent company Viacom will have a very difficult time filling some very large shoes, according to one executive. Viacom's Media Networks unit, which includes Comedy Central along with Nickelodeon and MTV, posted a 1% operating income loss during first quarter earnings reported last month.

"Comedy Central just lost Colbert and now is losing Stewart -- that is alot of talent walking out the door," said the executive.

Comedian Patton Oswalt tweeted his disappointment in hearing of Stewart's departure: "So we have to navigate the poop-dipped trainwreck of the 2016 election without Jon Stewart hosting The Daily Show? Hmmm..."

TBS has greenlit a new scripted comedy pilot from The Daily Show's Jason Jones & Samantha Bee, network officials said Tuesday.

Jones will star in the pilot, which follows a family as they take a road trip to Key West, said network officials.

“As we continue to move TBS in new and exciting directions, we believe that comedies like this will truly resonate with our target audience of young adults,” said Brett Weitz, senior vice president of scripted development for TBS and TNT in a statement. "We’re thrilled to be working with Jason & Sam Bee, two of The Daily Show's breakout stars and two of the funniest writers in the business.”
