Continuing to seize attention through a hodgepodge of programming pickups, Tubi has licensed all 15 seasons of the aughts-era NBC reality hit The Apprentice.

The deal with MGM Television makes Tubi the exclusive home for the Mark Burnett-produced show, which ran in NBC prime time from 2004-2017 and featured for the first 15 seasons Donald Trump as the stern overseer and judge of a panel of young business wannabes and also celebrity business wannabes.

Tubi’s deal follows last week’s announcement that it picked up FX’s Charlie Sheen series, Anger Management, for an exclusive window. The free-to-consumer platform also recently licensed The Bachelor. Tubi booked $25 million in additional financing in January, specifically earmarking the funds for content acquisition. Tubi has said it will plunge “nine figures” into upcoming content acquisitions.

“In our quest to democratize content and make more premium content accessible, we are making a big push into the reality television space,” said Farhad Massoudi, CEO of Tubi, in a statement. “The Apprentice is our second big series announcement this month, and we will have more in the near future.”

MGM Worldwide Television has promoted Mark Burnett to chairman, and the long-time television executive has agreed to extend his employment deal with the company to 2022.

Burnett, who made his name first as a producer of reality hits like Survivor and The Apprentice, has been president of MGM Worldwide TV since 2015, when his production company One Three Media was acquired the movie and television studio.

“Mark is a one-of-a-kind creative individual with an incredible eye for talent and content and a long track record of success,” said Kevin Ulrich, CEO of Anchorage Capital Group and chairman of MGM’s board of directors in a statement. “We are confident that under Mark’s leadership, MGM Television’s best days are ahead.”

Burnett has added a huge number of scripted and reality series to the MGM slate over the years. Earlier this week premium channel Epix – owned by MGM – added his boxing reality series The Contender to its lineup. 

“In the past four years at MGM we have renewed all our television franchises and have added a lot of new hits,” Burnett said in a statement. “This is the most fun I have had in my career and I know we will continue to build on these successes. I believe so strongly in the future of MGM and the team that surrounds me and it was important for me to extend my involvement well into the future.”

Presidential candidate Donald Trump pointed out in a CNN interview with Jake Tapper that he will be giving up hundreds of millions of dollars to run for the office.

That was a reference to his The Apprentice reality show on NBC, which he pointed out he was having to give up. Trump said NBC would have preferred he not have to forego the show given its success.

In truth, the show's ratings have slipped, and the network has kept the show largely out of the promotional spotlight of late. In a statement this month affirming its commitment to the 11-year-old franchise, the network conceded Trump's role as host would need to be evaluated in light of his run.

He is not required to give up the TV appearances, but as a practical matter he would need to for the sake of the TV stations that carry the show.

That is because, per FCC rules, a declared candidate for federal office can't appear on TV, other than in bona fide news and interview shows, without triggering the obligation of TV stations to provide an equal opportunity for access to their airwaves for all similarly situated candidates who request it -- and there are more than a dozen Republican candidates alone.

"If any licensee shall permit any person who is a legally qualified candidate for any public office to use a broadcasting station, he shall afford equal opportunities to all other such candidates for that office in the use of such broadcasting station," the FCC rules state.
