FX will once again team with The Americans creators Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg on a new psychological thriller that will star Steve Carell.

The new series, The Patient, stars Carell as psychiatrist Alexander Strauss, who finds himself being held prisoner by a serial killer with an unusual request: to curb his homicidal urges, FX said. Having recently lost his wife, Strauss has yet to plumb the depths of his own pain and loss, creating a journey that is perhaps as treacherous as his captivity, said the network.  

Carell, who was nominated for 11 Emmys for his role as Michael Scott in The Office and currently appears in Apple TV Plus’s The Morning Show, will serve as executive producer of the 10-episode series along with Fields, Weisberg, Caroline Moore and Victor Hsu.

“We are excited that Joe and Joel are back with their next series for FX after the great experience of working with them on six amazing seasons of The Americans,” said FX Entertainment president Eric Schrier in a statement. “Their creative instincts and mastery of plot and character are on display again with The Patient, which will showcase Steve Carell’s remarkable talents as an actor, producer and creative collaborator.” 

The Golden Globes highlighted cable and streaming service shows Sunday night, with FX and Netflix leading the way with the most award wins, according to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. 

FX and Netflix tied with three awards apiece during NBC’s live Golden Globes telecast in which the broadcast networks were shut out of winners circle. Amazon was the only other service winning multiple awards with two.

FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace won two awards, including best limited TV series or movie. Netflix’s The Kominsky Method also won two awards, including best comedy series, while FX’s The Americans won the best drama television series statuette in its last year of eligibility.

Other Golden Globes highlights include Sandra Oh --who co-hosted the awards telecast with Andy Samberg --winning the best actress in a drama series award for her role in BBC America's Killing Eve.

Also, Darren Criss became the first Filipino American to win a Golden Globe with his starring role in FX's The Assassination of Gianni Versace, which won the best performance by an actor in a limited series or motion picture made for television award.

FX’s The Americans won the Golden Globes award for best drama in its farewell season.

The series, which ended its six-season run last May, replaces last year’s Golden Globes winner, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale.

The series, which stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys, also beat out sister FX series Pose, Netflix’s Bodyguard, Amazon’s Homecoming, and BBC America’s Killing Eve for the award. 

FX topped all cable, broadcast and streaming services in garnering 2019 Golden Globes nominations, according to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which announced the nominations Thursday morning.

FX garnered 10 nominations, topping HBO and Amazon's nine nods, according to the association. The network was bolstered by an industry high four nominations for its limited drama series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, and three nominations for the final season of its drama series The Americans.

Also getting three nominations were HBO’s freshman series Barry, Netflix's The Kominsky Method, HBO's Sharp Objects; and Amazon's Homecoming, A Very English Scandal and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which won the Globe last year for best comedy series.

The Handmaid’s Tale’s Elisabeth Moss and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Rachel Brosnahan will also look to repeat in the best actress drama and best actress comedy categories, respectively.

NBC will air live on Jan. 6 the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards telecast, which will be co-hosted by Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg.

Netflix beat out HBO for the most Emmy wins during last night’s primetime Emmy Awards telecast, but both networks finished in a tie for the most Emmys wins overall, according to the TV Academy.

Netflix, which shocked the television industry by garnering more Emmy nominations than HBO, won seven Emmy awards during NBC’s live Emmys telecast, topping HBO by one statuette, according to the Academy. Amazon and FX tied for third with five wins, while ABC, NBC and VH1 won one Emmy a piece.

Both Netflix and HBO garnered 23 Emmy Awards across the Primetime Emmy and Creative Emmy ceremonies. "Tonight's recognition is a tribute to the creativity and talent of thousands of artists and we are thrilled to see their work awarded by the Academy," said Netflix vice president of original series Cindy Holland in a statement. "We are honored to share this night with our friends at HBO, who have paved the way for years by setting the highest possible standard."

Amazon Prime’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was the biggest winner among all shows during last night’s ceremony, winning five statuettes, including best comedy. Maisel’s win officially ended the three-year run of HBO’s Veep atop the best comedy category. Veep was not eligible for 2018 Emmy consideration.

FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace finished second with three Emmy wins including Outstanding limited series, followed by the network’s The Americans, which drew two Emmy wins.

HBO’s Game Of Thrones – which won the best drama Emmy after not being eligible for the honor last year – also drew two wins along with HBO’s Barry, and Netflix’s Godless and The Crown.

HBO’s Last Week Tonight With John Oliver won its third straight Emmy for outstanding variety talk series.

FX has picked up Mayans MC to series, ordering a 10-episode first season of the drama from Kurt Sutter and Elgin James, said Nick Grad and Eric Schrier, presidents of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions, at the TCA Winter Press Tour.

The show, which is the next chapter in the Sons of Anarchy saga, will premiere in 2018.

Sons of Anarchy was the highest-rated drama in FX history for seven seasons. The Mayans were recurring players throughout the show’s seven-year run.

“Kurt Sutter is a master storyteller, and Mayans MC has the raw energy and intensity that are hallmarks of his signature style,” said Grad. “Thanks to Kurt, co-creator Elgin James and this amazing cast, Mayans MC builds on the legacy of Sons of Anarchy, taking it in a thrilling new direction that we can’t wait for the world to see.”

Mayans MC is set in a post-Jax Teller world, where EZ Reyes, fresh out of prison, is a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the California/Mexico border. Now EZ must carve out his new outlaw identity in a town where he once was the golden boy who had the American Dream within his grasp.

Mayans MC is produced by Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions. The show stars Edward James Olmos, JD Pardo, Sarah Bolger, Clayton Cardenas, Richard Cabral, Michael Irby, Raoul Trujillo, Antonio Jaramillo and Carla Baratta.

Noberto Barba directed the pilot and will be an executive producer, with Sutter an executive producer and James a co-executive producer.

FX also set premiere dates for current series. Season two of Atlanta, called "Atlanta Robbin’ Season," debuts March 1. Starring Donald Glover, who is also an executive producer, it shows a couple of cousins working in the Atlanta music scene.

Trust, about John Paul Getty III, arrives March 25. And The Americans starts up March 28, the spy show’s sixth and final season.

FX continues to build the lineup for its FX+ commercial free service by adding epiosdes from several series including Emmy-award winning series Atlanta, the network announced Monday.

FX+, which is currently available to Comcast Xfinity TV and Cox Contour subscribers for fee of $5.99 per month, will now include episodes from its freshman comedy series Atlanta -- which recently won two Emmy Awards – drama series The Americans, Legion and Taboo, and comedy series Better Things, according to network officials.

The shows will be rolled out over a period of time, with FX+ expected to complete its roster beginning in 2018, the company said. Overall, FX+ will feature more than 1,300 episodes of award-winning and acclaimed original programs spanning the past 15 years. Among the shows currently available on the service include American Horror Story, Baskets, Nip/Tuck,, The Shield, Wilfred, The League and Louie.

 AMC has also launched a commercial-free version of the network, AMC Premiere, which Comcast carries for $4.99 a month.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — On a side street lined with industrial buildings, Elizabeth and Philip Jennings, the Soviet spies who pass as local travel agents, arrive for a meeting with their handler. This isn’t the latest scene from an FBI investigation into Russian hacking of U.S. emails.

It’s the filming of season five of FX’s The Americans at the Eastern Effects studio. While nearly every scene in this series is ominous and foreboding, the atmosphere on set remains light.

As the crew sets up the shot, the conversations are about Nutter Butters and other snacks, with someone riffing about “cheeses of Nazareth.” Suddenly, a booming voice, jolly in tone, issues a decree: “Once again, everyone, it’s time to entertain the world.”

And into this jovial atmosphere the stars emerge and take their marks. As The Americans heads into season five, the show is at a turning point, a moment that turns the normal arc of a popular series on its head.

Despite wildy rapturous critical applause, the ratings and audience demographics never matched up and indeed slipped to new lows last year.

AWARDS SHOWS TAKE NOTICE
At the same time, though, the show grabbed its first-ever Golden Globe nominations (for stars Matthew Rhys, who plays Philip, and Keri Russell, who plays Elizabeth). And last year, it finally got some generous love from the Emmys: outside of the theme song, only Margo Martindale, who plays Claudia, Philip and Elizabeth’s KGB handler, was nominated for the show’s first two seasons; the show got its first writing nod for season three (with Martindale for best supporting actress). But season four marked the breakthrough, with Martindale (who won again) joined by nominations for Rhys, Russell, the writing and for Outstanding Drama Series.

All that attention came not long after showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields, along with network executives, decided to end the series after six seasons. This means season five, which begins March 7, is the start of the show’s home stretch.

The new season also marks the show’s biggest tone change since season two, when it shifted from an episodic spygenre show to a serialized drama about a family that happens to be spies. And the changes have nothing to do with reflecting the current state of U.S.-Russian affairs. “We talk about that during lunch, but the show is in a bubble in the early 1980s,” Weisberg said.

Fields acknowledges that the audiences may now view the show differently, but said the issues of identity, trust, how we view the “other” and the “enemy” have always been its essential themes. The show has also always been a story about immigrants trying to fit in while dealing with mixed emotions about the land they left behind, Weisberg said.

“We realized that the spy stories took up three-fourths of every episode and there was not space to tell the story of this marriage and this family,” Fields said of that first season. “That became the focus and it radically shifted how we wrote the show.”

Added executive producer Stephen Schiff: “We pushed the show into new territory because now we could. We could make it more personal and less genre-specific.”

Schiff was one of four new writers brought in for that second season as part of the change.

The shift “allowed us to think about the show novelistically and to chart everything long-term,” Weisberg added. For instance, if an episode was running too long, the creative team could push its last 10 or 15 minutes into the next episode without sacrificing character development.

The writers took more risks. For instance, the opening scene of season five occurs in a high-school lunchroom with students the audience has never seen before; the ’80’s new wave soundtrack gives the scene a feel closer to an immigrant’s take on The Breakfast Club rather than The Americans.

“That whole opening was intentional,” Fields said. “We said, ‘Let’s have some fun and really change things up.’ ” (Ultimately, he noted, “try as I might, it still is The Americans and I’m never going to do the musical episode I’ve always wanted to do.”)

Weisberg said the large change for season five is that several major characters from the first four seasons — Nina Krilova, Martha Hanson and Frank Gaad — are all gone, giving the writers more room to focus on the Jennings family.

“The tone of the season is different, but it’s not because we’re closer to the end,” Schiff said. “It’s because Philip and Elizabeth are evolving and we see that evolution very clearly in season five.”

Cleaning out to focus on the core characters was an organic decision, according to the writers, who said FX has always supported them without much concern for the ratings. The show has never been even close to a breakout hit and, in fact, it lost 12% of its viewers and 17% of its viewers 18-49 in season four.

Its 910,000 viewers in the 18-49 demo was the secondlowest number of any Emmynominated series last year and among dramas, it badly trailed its competitors not just in that demographic but in overall viewers, drawing 2.1 million. It was only close to USA Network’s Mr. Robot (2.74 million), and far from AMC’s Better Call Saul (4.8 million), Showtime’s Homeland (6.1 million), HBO’s Game of Thrones (10.6 million) and PBS’s Downton Abbey (11.5 million).

Building viewers has been more difficult because the older episodes required for catching up are on Amazon Prime (and iTunes), but not Netflix, which is in far more households.

FX executives shrug, unconcerned. For starters, the show’s older audience is educated and wealthy and thus desirable to advertisers. But an equally significant statistic might be that The Americans garnered a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes last year and a 95% on Metacritic, making it the most critically acclaimed series in all TV-dom.

PRESTIGE ADDS VALUE
“The show’s value goes beyond its ratings,” said Eric Schrier, president of original programming at FX Networks and FX Productions (along with Nick Grad). “It’s important for our profile, for the brand.”

Schrier said the Emmy nods may not provide a quantifiable ratings boost but do add brand luster. The show’s quality and reputation also have “long-term value” because FX is a co-producer and part owner of the show [with Fox 21], he said. (Fields welcomes FX executives’ suggestions: “They’re diligent and brilliant, they’re like dramaturges and they see the show with fresh eyes,” he said, adding that he and Weisberg have already incorporated a few notes into reshoots for this season.)

The show’s shelf life will come into focus sooner rather than later with its finale coming in 2018. Weisberg says he and Fields took a long walk in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park during season two and figured out how they wanted to end. Schrier said they decided on the “when” during season four; he said it was a conversation between the showrunners and the executives, adding FX would have been open to five, six or seven seasons, depending on what the creators felt they needed.

“We thought it would help them map it out if they knew and that would help the ending,” Schrier said, pointing out that FX prefers to have shows go out on top creatively. The network made creative decisions to end The Shield, Sons of Anarchy and Justified, rather than milk them for every last dollar.

“Series have a natural beginning, middle and end,” he said.

FX’s freshman series Atlanta helped the network take home the most Writer’s Guild Awards of any television or streaming network during Sunday’s awards ceremonies.

FX won four WGA Awards, including two for Atlanta, which won for best comedy series and best new series. The network’s The Americans won best Drama Series and it’s the People V. O.J. Simpson won for best Adapted Long Form show, according to the WGA.

HBO, Netflix, NBC, PBS and CBS all won multiple WGA Awards during the event.

FX will extend its anthology series American Horror Story for two additional seasons beyond its already scheduled seventh installment, the network announced during its Television Critics Association press tour presentation Thursday.

The network will add seasons eight and nine to the Ryan Murphy-produced American Horror Story franchise, which is slated to return for its  previously announced seventh campaign later this year, according to John Landgraf, CEO of FX Networks and FX Productions.

The series has won 15 Emmy Awards during its first six season and currently represents 12 of FX’s top 15 most watched telecasts ever, according to the network.

“American Horror Story launched the modern limited series revolution and – as evidenced by the most recent installment ‘Roanoke’ - it remains as vital today as when Murder House stunned audiences six years ago,” said John Landgraf. “Each new chapter is a cultural event, beloved for every new twist in imagery, style, cast and plot. We are thrilled that Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and the entire creative team will continue to deliver the groundbreaking, celebrated American Horror Story for years to come.”

FX also announced premiere dates for several of its new and returning series, including the debut of freshman drama series FEUD: Bette and Joan (March 5), the fifth season return of The Americans (March 7) and the premiere of animated series Archer on FXX (April 5).

FX’s limited series The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story was the big winner at Saturday’s TCA Awards event, the Television Critics Association announced.

The series won three awards to lead all television shows, including Program of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries, and Specials and the Individual Achievement in Drama award given to Sarah Paulson for her portrayal of prosecutor Marcia Clark, according to the TCA.

FX’s The Americans repeated as the winner in the Outstanding Achievement in Drama category, while ABC’s Black-ish received the award for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy and USA's Mr. Robot won the best new program award, according to the TCA.  

CBS’ 1970s comedy The Mary Tyler Moore Show was honored with the TCA’s Heritage Award, and legendary actress Lily Tomlin was presented with a Career Achievement Award.

The 32nd Annual TCA Awards presentation, held at the Beverly Hilton, recognized the top programs and actors from the 2015-2016 television season.

“This was truly a landmark season—not just for television, but for women in television,” said Amber Dowling, TCA President. “We had an unprecedented amount of female winners this year, which is a testament to both the talented actresses who were honored tonight, as well as to the growing number of high-quality roles being created for and by women. It’s extremely encouraging to see this growing trend being embraced, accepted, and expanded upon, and I look forward to seeing even more of it in the future.”

Cable and online subscription video on demand services dominated nominations for many of the major Emmy Award categories announced Thursday morning. 

Cable networks and streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon virtually swept the best drama and best comedy categories for the 68th annual Emmy Awards, according to the Television Academy. PBS’ Downton Abby in its final year of eligibility was the only broadcast network nominated in a list that included last year’s winner HBO’ Game Of Thrones, FX’s The Americans, AMC’s Better Call Saul, Showtime’s Homeland, Netflix’s House of Cards and USA’s Mr. Robot.

On the comedy side, ABC’s Black-ish and Modern Family will battle Netflix’s Master of None and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, HBO’s Silicon Valley and Veep, and Amazon’s Transparent.

Cable also had a strong showing on the limited series front with FX’s Fargo, History’s Roots, AMC’s The Night Manager, and FX’s The People Vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story all garnering nominations. ABC's American Crime rounded out the list. 

Overall, HBO generated 94 nominations to lead all distributors, followed by FX with 56 nominations and Netflix with 54 nods. NBC pulled in 41 nominations, while fellow broadcasters ABC and CBS earned 35 nominations each. Pay TV network Showtime garnered 22 nominations, according to the Academy.

HBO's Game of Thrones tallied the most show nominations with 23, while FX's The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story and Fargo received 22 nominations and 18 nominations respectively, according to the Academy.

HBO took home the lion’s share of Critics’ Choice Television Awards during Sunday night's live telecast.

HBO won seven awards to lead all cable shows, followed by FX with four wins, according to the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA). Amazon, AMC, Comedy Central and Fox also took home multiple awards with two each.

Olive Kitteridge (HBO) was most honored program with three wins including best limited series. AMC’s Better Call Saul, HBO’s Silicon Valley and Amazon’s Transparent won two awards each, according to the BTJA.

FX’s The Americans won the award for Best Drama Series, while Silicon Valley (HBO) won Best Comedy Series. HBO’s Bessie took top honors in the best movie made for television category. 

Best actor in a drama series went to Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), while Jeffrey Tambor took home top honors for best actor in a comedy series for his role in Amazon’s Transparent.

The Best actress in a drama series was awarded to Taraji P. Henson for her role in Fox’s Empire, while the best actress in a comedy series nod went to Amy Schumer (Comedy Central’s Inside Amy Schumer.)

Critics’ Choice LOUIS XIII Genius Award: Seth MacFarlane

FX will bring back its drama The Americans for a fourth season, the network announced Tuesday.

Through the first five episodes, season three of The Americans is slightly behind season two in total viewers (4.21 million vs. 4.28 million) and adults 18-49 (1.84 million vs. 1.97 million) based on Live+7 Nielsen ratings, but DVR usage for season three  is up 147% in Live+Same Day to Live+7 viewing as opposed to a 124% lift in Season 2 and a 93% lift in Season 1, said network officials.

The Americans concludes its third season April 22.

“Remarkably, this season of The Americans has achieved even greater acclaim than that of its first two seasons," said Nick Grad, copresident of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions in a statement. "The series has cemented it status with critics as television’s best current drama and arguably the best show on TV, and we couldn’t agree more."
