FX’s freshman drama series Shōgun was the big winner during Friday's 40th annual TCA Awards ceremony, which recognized the best in programming for the 2023-24 TV season, according to the Television Critics Association. 

Shōgun garnered four wins, including Program of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Drama, TCA said. Max comedy series Hacks drew two awards wins for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy category, as well as Individual Achievement in Comedy for series star Jean Smart. Netflix miniseries Baby Reindeer won the award for Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries or Specials.

Disney Plus’s Bluey was the only repeat winner, taking home the statuette for the second straight year in the Outstanding Achievement in Children's Programming category. 

The TCA also named late actor Andre Braugher as its Career Achievement recipient, and 1990s ABC drama series Twin Peaks as its Heritage Award winner. 

“It was a year of brilliant television, from an epic historical drama to a harrowing documentary,” TCA president Jacqueline Cutler said. “We’re thrilled to honor all who created these shows, often against great odds, as many were worked on during the pandemic and stopped for the strikes. Congratulations to all of the winners.”

FX and Netflix led a diverse lineup of programmers nominated for TCA Awards, the Television Critics Association announced Monday (June 10).

FX and Netflix each drew 16 nominations to lead all content providers, followed by HBO/Max with 13 nominations, according to the TCA. Overall, 16 distributors garnered TCA Awards nominations, TCA said.

FX was led by five nominations for the first season of Shōgun, while Netflix drew five nominations each for freshman drama series Baby Reindeer and Ripley.

The three freshman shows will compete against each other in the Program of the Year category, along with FX’s The Bear and Reservation Dogs and Max’s Hacks.  The three shows will also battle in the Outstanding New Program category along with Prime Video’s Fallout and Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Disney Plus’s X-Men ‘97.

Freshman shows dominated the drama category as Fallout, Baby Reindeer, Ripley and Shōgun battle FX’s Fargo and HBO’s True Detective: Night Country for top honors.

FX’s The Bear will look to repeat in the Outstanding Achievement in Comedy category against the 2022 category winner, ABC’s Abbott Elementary, Netflix’s Girls5eva, Hacks, Reservation Dogs and Peacock’s We Are Lady Parts.  

“This was a terrific television season in every genre, and our nominations reflect those riches,” TCA president Jacqueline Cutler said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to celebrate our 40th Awards and even more delighted to do so in person.” 

The 40th annual TCA Awards winners will be announced during a live ceremony in Pasadena, California, on July 12.

HBO’s Succession and FX’s The Bear won multiple TCA Awards celebrating the top television shows from the 2022-23 season, the Television Critics Association announced Monday (August 7).

Succession, which ended its four-season run in May, won both the Outstanding Achievement in Drama and Program of the Year Awards. FX's The Bear took home the Outstanding Achievement in Comedy and Outstanding New Program awards.

Actresses swept the individual achievement award categories, with Better Call Saul’s Rhea Seehorn winning the Drama award for her portrayal of Kim Wexler in the AMC series, which ended its six-season run in 2022. Poker Face’s Natasha Lyonne was triumphant in the comedy category for her role as Charlie Cale in the Peacock series.

The Carol Burnett Show was bestowed the TCA’s Heritage Award, while actor. producer and writer Mel Brooks was honored with the TCA Career Achievement award.

“This was a landmark year for television, as we said goodbye to several powerhouse series while welcoming a new generation of shows and stars into this highly competitive landscape," TCA outgoing president and Salon TV Critic Melanie McFarland said in a statement. “Whether established hits or first-year favorites, our honorees exemplify the strength of television and the unique depth that it allows creators to explore.”

The awards were announced online after the in-person TCA Awards ceremony originally scheduled to be part of the August TCA Summer Tour was canceled due to the ongoing TV writers and actors strike.

HBO and streaming service Max — led by shows Succession and The Last of Us — drew the most nominations for 2023 TCA Awards, the Television Critics Association said Friday.

HBO and Max garnered a combined 20 nominations for the TCA Awards — which spotlight exceptional performances, series, creators, and stars spanning across all genres and platforms — to lead all distributors, according to the TCA, which represents more than 200 journalists who cover television for publications across the U.S. and Canada.

FX finished second with 10 nominations, followed by Disney Plus and Peacock, with nine nods each. 

HBO’s Succession and The Last of Us earned an industry-high five nominations each, tied with FX's The Bear. ABC series Abbott Elementary and Peacock’s Poker Face tied with four nominations.

Abbott Elementary will look to repeat in the category of Outstanding Comedy series as it competes with HBO’s Barry and Max’s The Other Two, as well as FX's Reservation Dogs and What We Do In The Shadows; Peacock's Poker Face; and Apple TV Plus's Shrinking. 

In the Outstanding Drama category, Succession will also look to repeat last year's win against 2019 category winner, Better Call Saul (AMC), as well as Disney Plus’s Andor, HBO/Max's The White Lotus and The Last of Us; Paramount Plus’s The Good Fight; AMC's Interview With the Vampire and Showtime’s Yellowjackets.

 “The 2023 nominees for the TCA Awards boast an eclectic lineup from across the entertainment spectrum,” TCA President and TV Critic for Salon.com Melanie McFarland said in a statement. “This season truly had something for everyone — from innovative comedies and gripping dramas, to immersive documentaries and refreshingly cerebral storytelling set in a galaxy far, far away. Freshman comedy series Abbott Elementary climbed to the top of the class at the 38th annual Television Critics Association Awards, winning four awards including Program of the Year.

The series, which follows the exploits of several teachers at an urban public school, also won awards in such categories as Outstanding Comedy, Outstanding New Program and Individual Achievement in Comedy for series star and creator Quinta Brunson, the TCA said.

Abbott Elementary helped ABC lead all networks with four wins, followed by Netflix with two awards. 

The TCA also awarded CBS sitcom I Love Lucy with its Heritage Award, and honored Steve Martin and Martin Short with its Career Achievement Award. 

The TCA Awards winners were announced virtually on Saturday after the organization late last month decided to cancel its in-person TCA Summer Press Tour amid rising cases of the BA.5 COVID-19 variant in the Los Angeles area.

Apple TV Plus’s Ted Lasso was the big winner at the 2021 TCA Awards, the Television Critics Association said Wednesday.

The streaming service's freshman soccer-themed series netted three awards, including Program of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Comedy and Outstanding New Program, according to the organization. 

HBO and HBO Max combined to take home the most TCA Awards for a distributor with four, including the best Individual Achievement in Drama statuette for HBO's I May Destroy You star Michaela Coel. Also, Jean Smart won the Individual Achievement in Comedy award for her starring role in HBO Max’s Hacks. Streaming services Netflix and Apple TV Plus drew three wins each. 

Smart also earned a career achievement award from the organization, celebrating the three-time Emmy winner’s acclaimed body of work from Designing Women to more recent roles including the TCA Award-winning miniseries Mare of Easttown.

HBO’s Last Week Tonight With John Oliver returned to the winner’s circle in the Outstanding Achievement in Variety, Talk or Sketch category, matching the late-night show’s 2018 and 2019 wins. HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show won the category in 2020.

“Television came through in a big way this year, serving up some much-needed entertainment that was a welcome distraction from the real-life dramas of the real world,” said Melanie McFarland, TCA president and TV critic for Salon. “This season’s offerings gave us plenty of reasons to smile in uncertain times. We are excited to honor these outstanding programs as we celebrate 37 years of the TCA Awards, and we look forward to being together again in person in 2022.”

Coming off a dominant Emmy Awards nominations showing, streaming platforms continued their unprecedented awards season roll as Netflix and Apple TV Plus’s Ted Lasso led the lineup of TCA Award nominations announced Thursday. 

Netflix drew 15 TCA Award nominations to lead all distributors, followed by HBO with 14 and streaming service HBO Max with 10. Apple TV Plus drew eight nominations, with Disney Plus and Showtime grabbing five nominations each, according to the Television Critics Association.

HBO and streaming service Netflix drew the most TCA Awards nominations among networks and streaming services, the Television Critics Association announced Thursday.

HBO garnered 16 TCA Award nominations to top all services for the second consecutive year, while Netflix generated 10 nods -- the only two networks to earn double-digit nominations, according to the TCA. More than 200 professional television critics and journalists from the United States and Canada voted for programming showcased on broadcast, cable and streaming outlets.

HBO’s drama series Watchmen and Netflix’s Unbelievable each garnered four nominations to lead all shows, said the organization.

“This was an incredible year for television, offering a variety of groundbreaking new series with fresh perspectives and renewed vigor for some veteran favorites,” said Sarah Rodman, TCA president and executive editor at Entertainment Weekly. “Although we sadly will not have the opportunity to gather to honor these creative achievements in person, we look forward to sharing our selections for the season’s top programs when the winners are unveiled later this summer.”

TCA Awards winners will be announced later this summer, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will not be a formal in-person awards presentation.

HBO drew the most 2019 TCA Award nominations while FX’s Pose and Netflix’s Russian Doll topped nominations for individual shows, according to the Television Critics Association.

HBO picked up 15 nominations to lead all cable, broadcast and streaming services, with Netflix following close behind with 14, according to the TCA. FX finished third with eight nods, with Amazon, CBS, PBS, NBC, Showtime, BBC America and Pop TV all garnering multiple nominations.

Dramas Russian Doll and Pose (pictured) each drew four TCA Awards nominations, according to the organization.

The 35th annual TCA Awards will be held Aug. 3 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

FX’s limited series The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story was the big winner at Saturday’s TCA Awards event, the Television Critics Association announced.

The series won three awards to lead all television shows, including Program of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries, and Specials and the Individual Achievement in Drama award given to Sarah Paulson for her portrayal of prosecutor Marcia Clark, according to the TCA.

FX’s The Americans repeated as the winner in the Outstanding Achievement in Drama category, while ABC’s Black-ish received the award for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy and USA's Mr. Robot won the best new program award, according to the TCA.  

CBS’ 1970s comedy The Mary Tyler Moore Show was honored with the TCA’s Heritage Award, and legendary actress Lily Tomlin was presented with a Career Achievement Award.

The 32nd Annual TCA Awards presentation, held at the Beverly Hilton, recognized the top programs and actors from the 2015-2016 television season.

“This was truly a landmark season—not just for television, but for women in television,” said Amber Dowling, TCA President. “We had an unprecedented amount of female winners this year, which is a testament to both the talented actresses who were honored tonight, as well as to the growing number of high-quality roles being created for and by women. It’s extremely encouraging to see this growing trend being embraced, accepted, and expanded upon, and I look forward to seeing even more of it in the future.”

HBO garnered the lion’s share of TCA Awards nominations, the Television Critics Association announced Thursday.

HBO drew seven nominations, leading all television networks. ABC, CBS, AMC, and FX each have five, with Fox PBS The CW, NBC, Comedy Central and ABC Family garnering multiple nominations, according to the organization.

OTT service Amazon garnered two nominations, both for its comedy series Transparent.

The TCA Awards, which recognize outstanding television programming in the 2014-2015 season, will be held Aug. 8 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel as part of the group’s annual Summer press tour.

“TCA members face yet another difficult decision this year, as they prepare to cast their votes for the winners in each category. This was an incredible season for returning favorites and new additions alike, and we’re looking forward to seeing what our members have chosen as the best of the best, when the winners are announced on August 8,” said TCA President Scott D. Pierce, television critic at The Salt Lake Tribune.

The Television Critics Association has announced the nominees for the 30th installment of the annual TCA Awards. Winners will be announced at the invitation-only ceremony, which takes place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on July 19, 2014. 

The awards span across a variety of categories, networks and genres, honoring the best programming aired during the 2013-2014 season. 

CBS has accumulated nine nominations — the highest of any network — for shows such as The Big Bang Theory, 60 Minutes and The Good Wife. HBO has eight programs nominated, FX has seven and Fox has six. Streaming service Netflix also received nominations for House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. 

“These nominations are generated by the TCA membership, and choosing the best in television is not an easy task. Not because good television is hard to find, but because there are so many deserving shows from which to choose,” said TCA President Scott D. Pierce. 

TCA members also vote on the winners in each category, with Program of the Year serving as the award ceremony’s highest distinction. Breaking Bad, which won Program of the Year last year, is nominated again this year alongside Game of Thrones (HBO), The Good Wife (CBS), Orange is the New Black (Netflix) and True Detective (HBO).
