Lifetime will conclude its Emmy-nominated documentary series Surviving R. Kelly with a two-night event debuting in January.

Surviving R: Kelly: The Final Chapter will air on consecutive nights beginning January 2,  and will focus on the fall out of the R&B singer’s crimes as he faces multiple federal and state trials, according to the network. The original 2019 documentary series Surviving R. Kelly series – and a second series, Surviving R. Kelly Part II: The Reckoning which debuted in 2020 – chronicled sexual abuse allegations against singer.

Surviving R. Kelly: The Final Chapter will feature over 60 voices and testimonials as it brings the saga to a conclusion, said network officials. The last episode features the survivors sharing their victim impact statements as they hear the final verdict against R. Kelly.

The Lifetime series is produced by Joel Karsberg, Tamra Simmons, Jesse Daniels, Maria Pepin and Brie Miranda Bryant.■ 

Cable networks and streaming services will kick off 2020 with a number of new and returning series.

On tap for New Year’s Day is the return of BBC America’s iconic sci-fi series Doctor Who, while Netflix debuts two original series Messiah and Spinning Out.

On Jan. 4, Netflix will resurrect an iconic vampire legend in Dracula, a new series co-produced by the BBC.

Lifetime in May will air a follow up special to its January docu-series Surviving R Kelly, the network said Friday.

Surviving R Kelly: The Impact will air May 4 and will look at the impact the original six-part documentary has had on today’s culture and how it has elevated the conversation on sexual violence and what it means to be a survivor, said network officials.

The special, hosted by Soledad O’Brien, features footage from the original docuseries, as well as interviews with journalists, legal experts, non-profit organizations and psychologists discussing the ongoing story surrounding R. Kelly, including an in-depth look at the R&B singer’s now infamous interview with Gayle King and the women who are still standing by his side, said Lifetime.

In February Kelly was indicted on 10 felony counts of aggravated sexual assault involving four victims and spanning over a decade, ultimately leading to Kelly’s arrest.

Lifetime’s Surviving R Kelly docu series averaged 2.1 million viewers in its Nielsen live+same day premieres, and finished as the female-targeted network’s strongest non-fiction series in seven years among adults 25-54 and women 25-54 according to Nielsen.

A+E Networks' core brands are driving ratings by creating content that is appealing to their respective audiences, according to A+E Networks president of programming Rob Sharenow, who recently sat down with Multichannel News for a video interview. 

"We're really leaning into what our viewers want and expect from us, and delivering," he said.

R&B singer R. Kelly Friday was charged in Chicago in connection with sexual abuse charges involving four female victims, according to published reports.

A Cook County, Illinois judge charged Kelly -- one of the most successful recording artists of all time --  with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse  involving three minors and one adult, according to CNN.

Kelly has faced much scrutiny over his relationships with women recently since Lifetime aired a six-part Surviving R Kelly documentary last month, which chronicled testimony from women who charged the singer allegedly held them captive and sexually abused them.

Kelly, who has been dogged by sexual abuse allegations for decades but has always denied any wrongdoing, was acquitted in a 2008 trial in which he was charged with several counts of child pornography.
