The earnings included a $67.9 million benefit from the new corporate tax law. The programmer also gained $11 million by repatriating foreign earnings.

Related: AMC Networks Offers to Buy RLJ Entertainment for $60M

Revenue fell 0.4% to $727 million.

At AMC’s national networks, including AMC, WE tv, Sundance, IFC and BBC America, operating income was down 6.5% to $176 million.

Revenue fell 1.3% to $606 million at the national networks. Distribution revenue was up 6.8% but advertising revenue was down 9.9% to $269 million because of lower delivery of viewers.

Programming and other expenses were up, including a $38 million writeoff for programming assets.

"AMC Networks delivered record financial results in 2017, increasing net revenues and adjusted operating income for the seventh consecutive year since becoming a public company, and generating significant free cash flow that we are using to invest in key strategic initiatives and our networks," said CEO Josh Sapan.

Related: BritBox Crosses 250K Sub Mark

"Our recent distribution deals with the streaming services fuboTV and Philo make AMC Networks available on more virtual MVPDS than any other independent programmer, proving the value of our discrete brands and our desirable, high-quality content,” Sapan said.

“Our owned streaming services Sundance Now and Shudder are seeing healthy subscriber growth and their momentum, coupled with the growth of the other streaming services we have invested in, including Acorn TV, Urban Movie Channel, and the BBC and ITV's Britbox, highlights consumer demand for subscription streaming services with specialized content," he added. "As we continue to evolve and adapt in a world of changing viewer consumption habits, we believe AMC Networks occupies a position of unique strength and are confident that our size, our focus, and our portfolio of assets will enable us to continue to deliver strong financial results to our shareholders."

Beverly Hills--A handful of cable networks held court with TV writers through the presentation of several true-crime-themed shows during the cable portion of the Television Critics Association summer press tour last week.

Networks showcased new scripted shows or documentaries that ressurected high-profile, sensational crimes ranging from the 1970s hunt for New York City serial killer David Berkowitz (Investigation Discovery’s Son of Sam: The Hunt For A Killer) to the 2002 abduction of teenager Elizabeth Smart (Lifetime’s original movie I Am Elizabeth Smart).

The shows continue a trend led by several recent true crime-themed TV projects surrounding the 1995 O. J. Simpson murder trial and the 1996 murder of JonBenét Ramsey that have corralled viewers by retelling sensational crime stories for a new generation of viewers that may have heard about the events but don't know all of the sordid details.

“I think (ESPN’s O.J. Simpson: Made In America) was really a game changer in terms of really giving some context to the time the crime happened and fitting that crime within the larger context of what’s going on in the culture,” Joe Berlinger, director/executive producer for Sundance TV’s Cold Blooded: The Clutter Family Murders told TCA writers.

The Cold Blooded special, airing later this fall, looks back at the 1959 murder of four members of the Clutter family in a small Kansas community. The crime was at the center of Truman Capote’s 1966 book In Cold Blood, which arguably gave birth to the true-crime genre.

Another true-crime show profiled at TCA, Discovery Channel’s eight-part miniseries Manhunt: Unabomber chronicling the 1990s hunt for domestic terrorist Ted Kaczynski, drew more than 1 million viewers in its Aug. 2 premiere on a network known more for unscripted fare like “Shark Week” programming and Naked and Afraid than for its scripted projects.

Lifetime’s original movie I Am Smart -- debuting in November -- throws a wrinkle into the genre in that the survivor of the crime, Smart herself, serves as narrator for the film, providing a unique perspective surrounding events that captivated the country 15 years ago.

Smart's abduction is even more terrifying and harrowing in her own words. She told a riveted audience of TV critics that she struggled with reliving her experiences through the film. “I was very proud of (the movie), but I hate it at the same time,” Smart said.

As headline-grabbing as these events were back in the day, Son of Sam: The Hunt For A Killer contributor Dr. Scott Bonn argued at TCA that these events would have become even more infamous had they happened in today’s social media-obsessed world.

“If this case happened today, God forbid … it would be the biggest crime story in the history of the world, without a doubt,” Bonn said.

TV viewers looking for some strong female-driven dramas have two terrific new options this summer, one on Starz and the other on SundanceTV. I say this as my wife and I are midway through screener-disk binges of Outlander and The Honorable Woman, respectively, sometimes forgetting if we are caught between the English and Scots in 1743 or between the Israelis and Palestinians today. Outlander premieres on Aug. 9; The Honorable Woman started on July 31.

Outlander will benefit from fans of Diana Gabaldon’s series of novels. Starz will certainly hope to attract many of them as new premium subscribers, as will distributors such as Time Warner Cable. The companies sponsored a screening and panel session last week at New York’s 92nd Street Y that drew a packed house with shrieks resembling gatherings at Comic-Con International.

The Honorable Woman has stars led by Maggie Gyllenhaal, and bears a resemblance to the Showtime hit Homeland. But, as an otherwise unknown quantity, it needs social support from those who’ve seen the show — including those watching it now in the U.K. on BBC2, where they spell it “Honourable.”

Outlander is a costume drama that gets the period details right and pulls off the nifty trick of leaving a lot of dialogue in untranslated Gaelic, making viewers feel that, like Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), they’ve been transported to a foreign place and will require all their wits and skills to survive.

The Honorable Woman does a bit of timetraveling — to 29 years ago, eight years ago and back to the present — and places Gyllenhaal’s character, Nessa Stein, in physical danger, too. Both also must keep secrets.

Claire knows she won’t be believed if she says she’s from the future, and already has enough powerful men skeptical about her. Nessa is keeping a life-or-death secret that keeps interfering with her efforts to bring peace and prosperity to Palestine and Israel.
