Sunday night was a big night for three television shows as HBO’s Succession, FX’s The Bear, and Netflix’s Beef took home the majority of Golden Globe Awards in the television category during the 81st annual ceremony televised January 7. 

Succession, which ended its four season-run last spring, won four Golden Globes, including the award for best drama series, beating out another HBO series, freshman The Last of Us, as well as Netflix shows The Crown and The Diplomat, and Apple TV Plus’s The Morning Show. The show's third best drama series win ties a Golden Globes record also achieved by The X-Files and Mad Men. 

The series also took home statutes in the Best Male Actor category for Kieran Culkin, Best Female Actor for Sarah Snook, and Best Male Supporting Actor category for Matthew Macfadyen.

The Bear won the best comedy series statuette, while series star Jeremy Allen White was a repeat winner in the competitive Best Performance by a Male Actor in a musical or comedy category, besting Barry’s Bill Hader, Shrinking’s Jason Segel, Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis, and Only Murders in the Building’s Martin Short and Steve Martin.

The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri was a surprise winner in a best performance by a female actor in a musical or comedy category that included last year’s winner, Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson, The Great’s Elle Fanning, Poker Face’s Natasha Lyonne, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Rachel Brosnahan and Only Murders in the Building’s Selena Gomez. 

Netflix’s The Beef swept the Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture categories, winning best series, as well as best male and female performances for Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, respectively. 

The Crown’s Elizabeth Debicki was the only other winner in the traditional Golden Globe television categories, taking home the Best Female Supporting Actor statuette for her role as Princess Diana in the Netflix drama series. Ricky Gervais won the Golden Globe in the newly-created Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television category for his Netflix special Armageddon. 

Comedian Jo Koy hosted The Dick Clark Productions-produced Golden Globes ceremony, which aired on CBS after NBC dropped the show in 2022 due to the show’s former owner, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s lack of diversity and other issues.

The full list of nominees is at Emmys.com. Succession has 27 Emmy nominations followed by The Last of Us (24), The White Lotus (23) and Ted Lasso (21). HBO, and HBO Max, has 127 nominations, while Netflix has 103. 

The 75th Emmys happens on September 18 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Fox will televise the event. 

HBO and streaming service Max — led by shows Succession and The Last of Us — drew the most nominations for 2023 TCA Awards, the Television Critics Association said Friday.

HBO and Max garnered a combined 20 nominations for the TCA Awards — which spotlight exceptional performances, series, creators, and stars spanning across all genres and platforms — to lead all distributors, according to the TCA, which represents more than 200 journalists who cover television for publications across the U.S. and Canada.

FX finished second with 10 nominations, followed by Disney Plus and Peacock, with nine nods each. 

HBO’s Succession and The Last of Us earned an industry-high five nominations each, tied with FX's The Bear. ABC series Abbott Elementary and Peacock’s Poker Face tied with four nominations.

Abbott Elementary will look to repeat in the category of Outstanding Comedy series as it competes with HBO’s Barry and Max’s The Other Two, as well as FX's Reservation Dogs and What We Do In The Shadows; Peacock's Poker Face; and Apple TV Plus's Shrinking. 

In the Outstanding Drama category, Succession will also look to repeat last year's win against 2019 category winner, Better Call Saul (AMC), as well as Disney Plus’s Andor, HBO/Max's The White Lotus and The Last of Us; Paramount Plus’s The Good Fight; AMC's Interview With the Vampire and Showtime’s Yellowjackets.

 “The 2023 nominees for the TCA Awards boast an eclectic lineup from across the entertainment spectrum,” TCA President and TV Critic for Salon.com Melanie McFarland said in a statement. “This season truly had something for everyone — from innovative comedies and gripping dramas, to immersive documentaries and refreshingly cerebral storytelling set in a galaxy far, far away. Last Friday morning, the New York Times had four articles about Succession above the fold on its homepage. The op-ed section now contains at least three more, and new ones seem to crop up daily.

Not to be outdone, New York magazine has entire columns devoted to each of the main characters. And they are not alone.

Yet Succession is not a ratings hit. Far from it. Primetime network series like Young Sheldon and Fire Country routinely pull in millions more viewers each week.

So what to make of the media’s obsession with Succession and what it tells us about the current state of the television industry.

Let’s start with the obvious: The media loves stories about the media and the fact that Succession is allegedly a roman à clef about the Murdoch family only adds to the appeal.

But that’s just the obvious.

On a macro level, the story is about the death of the midcentury monoculture that defined America and is why the series finale of Seinfeld was watched by 76 million viewers and the series finale of Succession by just 2.9 million.

Because that’s really the thing -- we are all consuming media in our own bubbles now, and I can all but guarantee you that the vast majority of people who watched Succession have never heard of Fire Country. 

And vice versa.

Or they’ve heard of it but didn’t see the appeal of it. Of a series whose characters were all unlikable and where the humor was often predicated on being privy to a certain world view, a certain type of class knowledge that people who have that class knowledge are often blissfully unaware they possess.

Which was, of course, one of the underlying jokes of Succession, which makes it all so very meta.

Then there’s the creative angle.

Succession will likely have far, far more of an impact on future TV series than either Young Sheldon or Fire Country. Because everyone will want the next Succession. Not because it made anyone gobs of money. But because it is a show that is popular with the type of people who make decisions about which television shows get produced. The fact that it is arguably an excellent show, well plotted, well paced with strong characters and a strong POV, being somewhat secondary.

Which means it will now be easier for HBO to recruit actors, writers and producers because they have proven they are still Ground Zero for the sort of buzzed about high profile series that high profile actors, writers, show runners and directors want to make. 

That said, the creative community -- including the striking writers when they are no longer on strike -- will ultimately have to weigh the prestige of working on a high-profile series against the reality that, at best, the series will have ten episodes a year.

And that a series like Succession with 40 total episodes is unlikely to fetch the princely sums in syndication that a Young Sheldon, with its 175 episodes and counting will. Or that Young Sheldon’s seven 25-episode seasons are the closest thing you can find to  full-time employment in the television industry.

So there’s all that and it’s not really an easy decision, much as you might argue that anyone who worked on Succession will no longer need to worry about finding work. 

So there’s that too.

Then there’s the HBO angle.

As in how much did Succession help HBO, especially in its latest incarnation as Max?

You can argue that it helped with retention -- that all that buzz helped in keeping a certain type of viewer on board. It was so, at least, until the season was over, that is, because why pay $16/month for something you’re not watching all summer?

And while most of the people who watched Succession were likely already HBO subscribers, at least at some point (the show certainly hit their sweet spot) the fact is that most of the other subscription streaming services are making HBO-like series now too and the knowledge that, despite all the changes in ownership, HBO is still HBO is not a bad thing. (And haters aside, it’s not as if any of those people are going to stop subscribing because WBD changed the name to Max.) 

Then there’s the flip side, which can best be summed up by a comment from an anonymous agent that made the rounds a few months back, something to the effect that Netflix needs to stop making “all those snobby shows that no one watches.”

Because from the other side of the divide, that is exactly what Succession is, and if WBD’s goal is to attract those viewers to Max, Succession probably isn’t helping. 

That’s assuming they even know about it, and in our new splintered media ecosystem there’s a very good chance that they don’t. The red state/mass market media they consume is not even aware of it, and it’s just another 10-episode streaming series that neither they nor anyone they know has ever watched.

Which brings us to the future value of Succession. 

The buzz around the show will likely help draw in new viewers for the next few years -- people who missed it the first time around and want to catch up, people for whom its presence, along with White Lotus, might help tip the scale enough to hit “subscribe.”

But it is only 40 episodes. 

And it is not the type of show you would ever describe as “comfort food TV.”

Which is notable because the series that have found whole new audiences in syndication have not been prestige TV -- there’s not a whole generation of middle schoolers binge-watching The Sopranos. Rather, the rediscovery has been around shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Friends and The Office, shows where you can get to know the characters as if they were old friends and follow them in hundreds of episodes over the course of a decade.

Shows like Young Sheldon.

The series finale for Succession drew 2.928 million viewers across linear HBO channels, as well as TV Everywhere and Max app-based streaming, a 68% increase over the December 12, 2021 season 3 ender. 

In fact, Sunday's finale was the most watched Succession episode ever, even usurping the April 30 “Living+” episode, which drew 2.75 million same-day viewers. 

Succession’s season four premiere back in March drew 2.3 million viewers. 

For its fourth and final season, Succession is averaging 8.7 million viewers, subsequent day viewing across platforms factored in. 

As its ample media coast coverage reveals, Succession was must-see TV Sunday night watching in certain enlightened regions of the country, a true successor to The Sopranos and The Wire, its darkly comedic themes laying bare the decayed fabric of our institutions and culture. 

But as the incessant Warner Bros. Discovery ads for relaunched streaming service Max perhaps foretell, the show — its cultural relevance and uncompromising narrative qualities aside — might be too narrow as to be reiterated in some form anytime soon by its parent company. 

Certainly, WBD — which wants Max to be the one watch by the many sides of us — has broader skewing programming options to choose from, franchise-oriented shows that seem to veer away from our terrifying undemocratic reality rather than plunge headlong into it as Succession just did. 

Consider that HBO's April 2019 Game of Thrones finale drew 19.2 million same-day viewers. These days, HBO has House of the Dragon, which signed off its first season last October with 9.2 million same-day watchers, as well as numerous other GOT spinoffs in development.

Also worth considering: In March, HBO’s The Last of Us wrapped season one with 8.2 million Sunday-night watchers. 

Meanwhile, back to this past Sunday, HBO’s hitman-themed comedic drama Barry also wrapped, drawing 700,000 viewers. That was a 13% uptick over the June 12, 2012 season three finale.

The season four debut of HBO’s Succession on Sunday drew 2.3 million viewers across HBO Max and the HBO linear channels, a high for the series.

Viewership was up 62% from the season three premiere and up 33% from the third-season finale, based on Nielsen and first-party data, HBO said.

Season 4 will be the last for the show.

Including delayed and on-demand viewing, season three episodes of Succession averaged 7.2 million viewers.

The only recent HBO shows to draw more viewers were House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel, The Last of Us and Euphoria. Succession topped the season two premiere of The White Lotus by 51%.

The battle between Logan Roy and his children over their family-run business is  explored in the official trailer for the final season of HBO’s Emmy-winning series Succession, which debuts March 26.

The fourth and final season of the drama series will detail the power struggle within the family as the sale of the media company Waystar Royco moves closer. “The prospect of this seismic sale provokes existential angst and familial division among the Roys as they anticipate what their lives will look like once the deal is complete,” HBO said.

It looks like Logan Roy will hand over the reins to his made up toxic media empire before Rupert Murdoch surrenders his real one. 

Jesse Armstrong, creator of Succession, told The New Yorker that the upcoming fourth season of the HBO hit series will be its last. 

“There’s a promise in the title of Succession. I’ve never thought this could go on forever,” Armstrong told the pub. “The end has always been kind of present in my mind. From season 2, I’ve been trying to think: 'Is it the next one, or the one after that, or is it the one after that?’ ”

Season four of Succession drops on HBO on March 26, with media czar Logan Roy having shouted his trademark “f*** off!’ simultaneously at all three of his most ambitious heirs … and the adult children once again plotting, this time in unison, to take the crown.

Since Game of Thrones signed off HBO in May 2019, Succession has arguably come closest to water-cooler-hit status for the premium channel, the recent big premieres of House of the Dragon and The Last of Us notwithstanding. 

Armstrong described the decision as a group one among series writers. 

“I got together with a few of my fellow writers before we started the writing of season four, in about November, December, 2021, and I sort of said, ‘Look, I think this maybe should be it,” he told The New Yorker. “ ‘But what do you think?’ And we played out various scenarios: We could do a couple of short seasons, or two more seasons. Or we could go on for ages and turn the show into something rather different, and be a more rangy, freewheeling kind of fun show, where there would be good weeks and bad weeks. Or we could do something a bit more muscular and complete, and go out sort of strong. And that was definitely always my preference.”

HBO’s Emmy-Award winning series Succession will return for its fourth season on March 26 as the drama over the selling of the Roys' family business continues.

The series, which took home best drama series honors at the Emmy Awards this past September, will focus on the struggles of the Roys family as the sale of the family’s Waystar Royco media conglomerate moves closer to finalization. According to HBO, the prospect of the sale provokes “existential angst and familiar division among the Roys as they anticipate what their lives will look like once the deal is complete. A power struggle ensues as the family weighs up to a future where their cultural and political weight is severely curtailed.”

A new trailer for the HBO's Emmy-winning drama series Succession promises more drama for the Roy family in the show's fourth season.

Succession, which won a 2022 Emmy Award for best drama series, follows the exploits of the Roy family, including the patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox) and his four grown children, Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Siobhan (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Connor (Alan Ruck).

According to HBO, the fourth season picks up after the proposed sale of the family-owned media company Waystar Royco, and how the prospect of the seismic sale provokes existential angst and familial division among the Roys as they anticipate what their lives will look like once the deal is completed. A power struggle ensues as the family weighs up a future where their cultural and political weight is severely curtailed, said the network.

The series also stars Matthew Macfadyen, Nicholas Braun, J. Smith-Cameron, Peter Friedman, David Rasche, Fisher Stevens, Hiam Abbass, Justine Lupe, Scott Nicholson, Zoë Winters, and Jeannie Berlin.

Succession is executive produced by Jesse Armstrong, Adam McKay, Frank Rich, Kevin Messick, Jane Tranter, Mark Mylod, Tony Roche, Scott Ferguson, Jon Brown, Lucy Prebble, Will Tracy and Will Ferrell. ■ 

HBO had a massive night at the Emmys in downtown Los Angeles September 12, with the Mike White social satire The White Lotus winning five trophies. Apple TV Plus comedy Ted Lasso claimed four, and HBO’s Succession took three. ABC comedy Abbott Elementary and Netflix drama Squid Game picked up two Emmys apiece. 

Among other HBO winners, Zendaya got best actress in a drama for Euphoria, Matthew Macfadyen got top supporting actor for Succession, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver picked up best variety talk series and outstanding writing for a variety series, Jesse Armstrong won for writing for a drama with Succession, and Jerrod Carmichael won for outstanding writing in a variety special for Rothaniel. 

HBO Max pitched in another win, as Jean Smart was honored for best actress in a comedy on Hacks. 

NBC aired the Emmys. Kenan Thompson hosted from the Microsoft Theater. Last year's event, hosted by Cedric the Entertainer on CBS, took place inside a tent near the theater, with a few hundred stars in attendance. 

The White Lotus won the prestigious best limited series, along with Jennifer Coolidge winning supporting actress in a limited series, Murray Bartlett getting supporting actor in a limited series, White winning for writing in a limited series and again for directing. 

The White Lotus, an upstairs-downstairs drama about the self-absorbed wealthy people at a Hawaiian resort and the staffers who serve them, beat Hulu’s Dopesick, The Dropout and Pam & Tommy, and Netflix’s Inventing Anna for best limited series. 

Succession got top drama, beating out AMC’s Better Call Saul, HBO’s Euphoria, Netflix’s Ozark, Stranger Things and Squid Game, Apple TV’s Severance and Showtime’s Yellowjackets. 

Ted Lasso won top comedy, besting ABC’s Abbott Elementary, HBO’s Barry, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Hacks (HBO Max), Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building and FX’s What We Do in the Shadows.

The political zingers often offered up by winners in their speeches were largely absent, with presenter Bowen Yang standing out for a mild poke at President Trump and the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago.  

Done+Dusted and Hudlin Entertainment produced the telecast, which featured 25 categories, plus the Governors Award. Presenters included Amy Poehler, Angela Bassett, Anthony Anderson, Christopher Meloni, Jean Smart and Jeremy Allen White. 

Last year, Netflix's The Queen's Gambit got top limited series, Ted Lasso won top comedy and Netflix's The Crown earned top drama. 

Succession creator Jesse Armstrong thanked HBO as he accepted the best drama prize, crediting the network for its efforts to “protect and support us.”

During one of his various trips to the podium, White Lotus creator White spoke about his time on season 37 of Survivor. He said the way to stay in the Survivor game was to lower your threat level. “Now I feel like I raised my threat level,” he said. “I want to stay in the game…don’t vote me off the island please!” 

Season two of The White Lotus, set in Italy, starts in October. ■

NBC's 2022 Emmy Awards primetime telecast was dominated by a handful of shows but still managed to feature a few surprises and record-setting wins.

HBO shows took two of the three top series awards, with Succession winning in the best drama series category and The White Lotus winning the top limited or anthology series award. Apple TV Plus’s Ted Lasso repeated as best comedy series.

The White Lotus led all shows with 10 Emmy Award wins across the Emmys' primetime and creative arts ceremonies, with HBO’s Euphoria and Netflix’s Squid Game finishing second with six awards each. CBS’ Adele: One Night Only, Netflix’s Stranger Things and Disney Plus’s The Beatles: Get Back finished in a third place tie with five statuettes each.

Netflix’s Squid Game made Emmy history when series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk became the first Asian to win an Emmy for best director for a drama series, and series star Lee Jung-jae won the Emmy for best lead actor in a drama series, also the first Asian to win the award in the category.

Several shows and performers garnered repeat wins during the ceremony, including Hacks’s Jean Smart and Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis, who took home their second straight lead comedy actress and actor Emmy statuettes, respectively. Also returning to the winner’s stage in consecutive years was Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein, who won for best supporting actor in a comedy series.

Other highlights include HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver winning its seventh-straight Emmy in the best variety talk series category, and Prime Video’s freshman series Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls ending Ru Paul’s Drag Race’s four year-winning streak in the best competition program category. In the variety sketch category, NBC's Saturday Night Live beat out its only competition, HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show, for its sixth consecutive Emmy win in the category.

Abbott Elementary’s Sheryl Lee Ralph was a surprise Emmy Award winner in the supporting actress in a comedy category, leading an otherwise predictable lineup of winners in the supporting performance categories across comedy, drama and limited series. 

Ralph, who plays teacher Barbara Howard in the freshman ABC comedy, accepted her first Emmy award during NBC's live telecast by singing lyrics from the Dianne Reeves song Endangered Species. She becomes the second Black woman in history to win in the category, 35 years after Jackée Harry won the award for her role in 227.

“To anyone who has ever had a dream and thought your dream wasn’t, wouldn’t, couldn’t come true, I am here to tell you that this is what believing looks like,” Ralph added. 

Abbott Elementary creator Quinta Brunson also won an Emmy for outstanding writing for a comedy series.

Other winners in the supporting actor and actress categories include Brett Goldstein, who repeated as supporting actor in a comedy series for his role as Roy Kent in Apple TV Plus’ Ted Lasso.

On the drama side, Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen won the best support actor award, while Ozark’s Julia Garner took home top honors for best supporting actress. 

HBO’s The White Lotus swept the supporting actor and actress categories in a limited or anthology series or movie, as Murray Bartlett and Jennifer Coolidge took home statuettes, respectively.■  

Freshman comedy series Abbott Elementary climbed to the top of the class at the 38th annual Television Critics Association Awards, winning four awards including Program of the Year.

The series, which follows the exploits of several teachers at an urban public school, also won awards in such categories as Outstanding Comedy, Outstanding New Program and Individual Achievement in Comedy for series star and creator Quinta Brunson, the TCA said.

Abbott Elementary helped ABC lead all networks with four wins, followed by Netflix with two awards. 

The TCA also awarded CBS sitcom I Love Lucy with its Heritage Award, and honored Steve Martin and Martin Short with its Career Achievement Award. 

The TCA Awards winners were announced virtually on Saturday after the organization late last month decided to cancel its in-person TCA Summer Press Tour amid rising cases of the BA.5 COVID-19 variant in the Los Angeles area.

HBO’s Succession was the big winner among a list of Emmy Awards nominations that offered few surprises but a lot of intrigue.

Succession led all shows with 25 nominations, followed by Apple TV Plus’s Ted Lasso and HBO’s The White Lotus with 20 nominations each. HBO Max’s Hacks and Hulu’s Only Murders In the Building drew 17 nominations each, while HBO’s Euphoria garnered 16 nods, according to the TV Academy during a Tuesday-morning online ceremony hosted by J.B. Smoove and Melissa Fumero. 

All of last year’s winners in the major comedy categories will be back to defend their crown. Apple TV Plus’ Ted Lasso will look to fend off challenges from ABC’s Abbott Elementary, HBO’s Barry and Curb Your Enthusiasm, HBO Max’s Hacks, Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building and FX’s What We Do In the Shadows. 

Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis will look to defend against previous category winner Donald Glover (FX’s Atlanta), as well as Bill Hader (Barry); Only Murders In the Building’s Steve Martin and Martin Short; and Nicholas Hoult (Hulu’s The Great).

Hacks’ Jean Smart takes on former category winner Rachel Brosnahan (Amazon Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Kaley Cuoco (HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant), Elle Fanning (Hulu’s The Great) and Issa Rae (HBO’s Insecure).

The absence of Netflix’s The Crown, which won 2021 Emmys in most of the major drama categories, provided a wide-open competition for best drama series, led by Succession along with three Netflix series — Ozark, Stranger Things and Squid Game — as well as Better Call Saul, Euphoria, Apple TV Plus’s Severance and Showtime’s Yellowjackets.

Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh earned Lead Actress in a Drama Series nods along with Ozark’s Laura Linney, Yellowjackets’ Melanie Lynskey, The Morning Show’s Reese Witherspoon and Euphoria's Zendaya. 

Succession’s Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong lead a best actor in a drama series category that also features Ozark’s Jason Bateman, Squid Game’s Lee Jung-Jae, Better Call Saul’s Bob Odenkirk and Severance’s Adam Scott.

NBC will air live the 74th Emmy Awards on September 12. ▪️

HBO’s hit drama Succession has begun production on season four in New York. Jesse Armstrong created the show. There will be 10 episodes in the new season.

HBO/HBO Max combined garnered the most Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations, led by drama series Succession, SAG announced during a Wednesday morning ceremony.

HBO/HBO Max drew 14 nominations, topping Netflix’s 10 nods. Streaming services Hulu, Apple TV Plus and Disney Plus also generated multiple SAG Awards nominations during the virtual ceremony, hosted by actresses Rosario Dawson and Vanessa Hudgens. 

Succession drew five nominations – including an outstanding drama ensemble nod – tying it for the top spot with Apple TV Plus’s Ted Lasso. Netflix’s Squid Game and Apple TV Plus’s The Morning Show – along with HBO’s Mare of Easttown – drew four nominations each.

Succession will battle with Squid Game, The Morning Show, Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale and Paramount Network's Yellowstone for best drama ensemble honors, while Ted Lasso, Hulu's The Great and Only Murders In The Building, HBO Max's Hacks, and Netflix's The Kominsky Method will compete in the best comedy ensemble category.

HBO’s Succession got the Golden Globe for best drama, while Hacks of HBO Max was named best comedy. 

The Golden Globes salute the best in television and film. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its winners January 9. NBC has been the longtime broadcast partner for the awards, but pulled out amidst controversy related to the HFPA. The event was not televised this year.

HBO cleaned up on the TV side, claiming six Golden Globes. The others went to Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV Plus, FX, Hulu and Netflix, all with one. 

Succession picked up three Globes. Hacks got two and a host of entrants got one. 

Best drama was between Netflix’s Lupin, Apple TV Plus’s The Morning Show, FX’s Pose, Netflix’s Squid Game and HBO’s Succession.

Best comedy was between The Great on Hulu, Only Murders in the Building on Hulu, Reservation Dogs on FX on Hulu, Ted Lasso on Apple TV Plus and Hacks on HBO Max. 

Best actress in a drama went to Michaela Jae Rodriguez of FX’s Pose. Best actor in a drama is Jeremy Strong of Succession. 

Best actress in a comedy is Jean Smart of Hacks, and actor in a comedy is Jason Sudeikis of Apple TV Plus’s Ted Lasso.

Top limited series is Amazon Prime’s The Underground Railroad.  

Best actress in a limited series went to Kate Winslet of HBO’s Mare of Easttown. Best actor in a limited series went to Michael Keaton of Hulu’s Dopesick. 

Best supporting actress is Sarah Snook from Succession, and best supporting actor is O Yeong-Su of Netflix’s Squid Game. 

Netflix did better on the movie side, leading among distributors with four Globes, ahead of 20th Century Studios/Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures at three. 

Netflix’s The Power of the Dog and West Side Story from 20th Century Studios/Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures each got three Golden Globes. 

The Power of the Dog got top drama among 2021 movies. West Side Story was best musical or comedy. 

Nicole Kidman won best actress in a drama for Being the Ricardos. Will Smith won best actor for King Richard. 

Rachel Zegler won best actress in a musical or comedy for West Side Story, and Andrew Garfield got best actor in the category for Tick, Tick…Boom!

Best animated film went to Encanto, and best non-English movie went to Drive My Car. 

Best supporting actress went to Ariana Debose of West Side Story and best supporting actor was Kodi Smit-Mcphee from The Power of the Dog.

Jane Campion of The Power of the Dog won best director and Kenneth Branagh of Belfast got best screenplay.  

Best original score went to Hans Zimmer of Dune and best original song to “No Time to Die” from Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell. ■

The third-season finale of HBO's Succession generated 1.7 million viewers across platforms, an audience performance figure well below the season-finale thresholds of over recent HBO water-cooler hits. 

But fictional Australian media baron Logan Roy's grip on the American zeitgeist is getting stronger, with Season 3's final episode drawing 47% more cross-platform viewers than Season 2's finale did back in October 2019. 

According to HBO, Succession Season 3 episodes have averaged 6.1 million viewers, up 56% over Season 2, with the premiere episode (which debuted back on Oct. 17) now closing in on 7 million viewers, thanks mostly to on-demand viewing on HBO Max. 

Succession, which was also nominated for five Golden Globes Monday, including best TV drama series best dramatic actor (both Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong received nods), was renewed for a fourth season back in October. 

HBO drama series Succession and Netflix Western-themed romantic drama Power of the Dog led another dominant awards showing by streaming companies with five Golden Globes nods each, as the embattled Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced nominations for its 79th annual Golden Globe Awards event Monday morning. 

Netflix once again received the most Golden Globes nominations, with Power of the Dog collecting two nods for New Zealand filmmaker Jane Campion (one each for writing and directing), as well as recognition for actors Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst and Kodi Smit-McPhee. Jonny Greenwood also was recognized for best score. 

Meanwhile, Netflix's Korean local-language dark fantasy sensation, Squid Game, was nominated for best TV drama, best drama actor (Lee Jung-jae) and best supporting actor (Yeong-su ). Netflix also received nominations for thriller series Lupin (best TV drama and best dramatic TV actor, Omar Sy,), original series Maid (actress Margaret Qualley), and film Don't Look Up (best comedy/musical actor and actress for Leonardo DiCaprio and  Jennifer Lawrence).

HBO's Succession received two best dramatic actor noms (Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong), as well as recognition for best drama series, best supporting actor (Kieran Culkin) and best supporting actress. 

HBO and HBO Max also got love from the HFPA for multi-generational comedy Hacks (best musical/comedy series, and best comedy musical actress for both Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder) and limited crime drama series Mare of Easttown (best TV drama and best lead actress for Kate Winslet). On the film side, HBO received recognition for Venus and Serena Williams biopic King Richard (best film drama, best actor for Will Smith, and best supporting actress for Aunjanue Ellis) and Dune (best drama, best director for Denis Villeneuve and best original score for Hans Zimmer). 

Apple TV Plus' Emmy sensation Ted Lasso, meanwhile, received four noms, including best TV comedy/musical, best comedy/musical lead actor (Jason Sudeikis), bvest comedy/musical supporting comedy actor (Brett Goldstein) and best comedy/musical supporting actress (Hannah Waddingham). 

What does it all mean? That's questionable, since NBC cancelled its long-running annual Golden Globes telecast, amid accusations that the HFPA lacks members of color and that the organization is rife with grift and payola. 

The HFPA announced a reform plan earlier this year, but it's not clear if any Hollywood studio or Silicon Valley streaming company will use the Golden Globes as a marketing platform as they have in year's past.

Rogers Communications chairman Ed Rogers, less than two weeks after winning a court battle that backed his moves to replace five members of his board of directors, said late Tuesday that company CEO Joe Natale has stepped aside in favor of former chief financial officer Tony Staffieri, a move that didn't go down well with Rogers's mother and two sisters, who are also top shareholders in the Canadian telecom giant. 

Rogers Communications said Nov. 16 that Natale stepped down as CEO and Staffieri was named interim CEO of the company. Staffieri resigned in September after it was revealed in press reports that he had accidentally pocket-dialed Natale while he was having discussions with former Rogers legal counsel David Miller to oust the former CEO. Staffieri was backed by Ed Rogers in the attempted coup, but the scandal forced the communications giant’s board to hold an emergency meeting where they ousted Ed Rogers as chairman and threw their support to Natale. Staffieri resigned as CFO on Sept. 29. 

Less than two weeks later, on Oct. 12, Rogers’ board said it had replaced Ed Rogers as chairman, naming board member John MacDonald in his place. 

Although the board decision to push him out was reportedly engineered by his own mother, Ed Rogers, who also serves as chairman of the family trust that controls 97.5% of Rogers Communications voting stock, fired five independent members of the company's board of directors and reinstated himself as chairman. 

That action touched off a public battle between Ed, his mother Loretta and two sisters Martha Rogers and Melinda Rogers-Hixon, who claimed Ed’s actions were illegal and violated the company charter. On Nov. 5, the British Columbia Supreme Court ruled in favor of Ed Rogers, who then said in a statement that Natale had the support of the Roger Communications board.

That didn’t last long. On Nov. 16, Rogers Communications issued a press release that said Natale would no longer be CEO effective that day and that Staffieri would replace him in the interim. Rogers said it would immediately begin its search for a permanent CEO, adding that Staffieri would also be considered.

The shakeup comes as Rogers’s $20-billion takeover of Shaw Communications continues to wind its way through the Canadian regulatory approval process. While that deal is expected to be completed by the first half of next year, and regulators insist they are concentrating on competitive issues, not family squabbles in their decision-making, other observers have said the ongoing drama has to have some effect on the deal. 

“Tony is amongst the most highly regarded and seasoned telecommunications executives in the industry and was a key part of the Shaw deal,” Ed Rogers said in the press release. “His incredible work ethic, track record for results, focus on long-term strategic growth, driving an excellent experience for our customers and employees, and strong operational execution will serve us well. The company has an exceptional set of assets and the Board has full confidence in his ability to lead Rogers during this period.”

According to Reuters, Rogers board member Robert Gemmell said in a statement that the company was had tried to reach a “constructive working relationship” with Natale through the Shaw merger, but failed to reach a deal. 

In a statement issued to the Toronto Star on Nov. 16, Ed Rogers’s mother and siblings had a different interpretation of Staffieri’s appointment, saying they were disappointed that “Edward has driven the termination of Joe Natale as RCI’s CEO."

“Joe is a world-class telecom leader, and as we have always said, we believe he’s the right person to lead RCI as chief executive,” the statement said. “The three of us voted against this misguided decision, which creates great uncertainty for RCI and its employees, customers, sports fans and shareholders, not to mention the Shaw transaction.”

Shaw representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment. ■

Just days after a British Columbia Court ruled in favor of Rogers Communications Inc. chairman Edward Rogers’ moves to fire the company’s board of directors and replace it with his own slate, the Canadian telecom giant said it would not formally appeal the court’s decision.

Edward Rogers replaced five members of Rogers Communications’ board on Oct. 21, after the board moved to fire him over his behind the scenes moves to oust company CEO Joseph Natale. In addition to jettisoning the board, Edward Rogers, who also is chairman of the Rogers family trust that controls 97.5% of the vote of the telecom giant, also reinstated himself as chairman. The company and remaining members of his family -- mother Loretta and two of his sisters Martha Rogers and Melinda Rogers-Hixon -- claimed that Edward Rogers had violated Canadian corporate law and company bylaws by removing board members without a formal vote. Edward Rogers filed a suit against the company in October to uphold his actions, on which the BC court ruled on Nov. 5.

In that written ruling, British Columbia Supreme Court Justice Shelley Fitzpatrick said Ed Rogers had sufficient authority as head of the Rogers Control Trust, adding that with 97.5% of the vote, his actions were “easily passed” by a special majority of Class A shareholders. 

In her ruling, Justice Fitzpatrick pointed to the highly public battle between family members, pointing to a flurry of critical twitter postings by Martha Rogers and press claims that Loretta Rogers was duped by her son in first agreeing that CEO Natale should be removed. 

“These family squabbles are an interesting backdrop to this dispute that would be more in keeping with a Shakespearean drama,” Fitzpatrick wrote. “They have no doubt added a voyeuristic element on the part of many into the lives of a very wealthy Canadian family and this aspect of the dispute has driven some media coverage. However, in my view, the family issues are of little assistance in determining the narrow legal issue raised and certainly do not need to be addressed or resolved in this Court. At best, they are a distraction.”

Rogers Communications initially said it planned to appeal the decision, with Loretta, Martha and Melinda issuing a statement that called the ruling a “black eye for good governance and shareholder rights and sets a dangerous new precedent for Canadian capital markets by allowing the independent directors of a public company to be removed with the stroke of a pen.”

But the company apparently changed its mind after Edward Rogers issued his own statement that said Natale has the board’s support as CEO.  

“Much has been written about Rogers CEO Joe Natale and his future,” Edward Rogers said in the statement. “Mr. Natale remains CEO and a director of Rogers Communications and has the Board's support. Our focus must be on the business, a return to stability, and closing our transformational merger with Shaw Communications.”

In a brief statement Nov. 7, Rogers’ board of directors said it “will not seek an appeal of last week’s British Columbia Supreme Court ruling.” 

In his Friday statement, Edward Rogers appeared to be willing to bury the hatchet with his family and get on with finalizing RCI’s pending takeover of Shaw Communications.

“The steps I have taken in the face of constant attacks in the media were difficult for me and my family,” Edward Rogers said in a statement issued after the ruling. “As Chair of the Rogers Control Trust, my responsibility is to ensure that the company is properly governed and effectively managed. I take that responsibility very seriously. Our family has disagreements like every other family. I am hopeful we will resolve those differences privately, as any family would. I know every member of our family wants the brightest future for Rogers Communications.”

Kieran Culkin, in the cast on HBO’s Succession, hosts Saturday Night Live on NBC for the first time Nov. 6. Ed Sheeran is the musical guest that night. 

Culkin plays Roman Roy on Succession, which began season three Oct. 17. 

Jonathan Majors, star of the film The Harder They Fall, hosts SNL Nov. 13. A western, The Harder They Fall is on Netflix Nov. 3. Taylor Swift is the musical guest on that episode, her fifth time on SNL. 

Simu Liu, star of Marvel movie Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings, hosts Nov. 20. Saweetie is the musical guest, for the first time, that night. Saweetie releases her debut album, Pretty Bitch Music, early in 2022. 

Saturday Night Live is produced in association with Broadway Video. The creator and executive producer is Lorne Michaels.

HBO will move forward with a fourth season of its drama series Succession, the network said Tuesday.

The Emmy award-winning drama is currently in its third season run on HBO. The Jesse Armstrong-created series drew more than 1.4 million viewers during its Oct. 17 season debut across all HBO platforms, said the company.

Succession, which explores themes of power and family dynamics through the eyes of patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox) and his four grown children, Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Siobhan (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Connor (Alan Ruck).

“With each season of Succession, Jesse Armstrong has continued to surpass our wildest expectations, pulling us deeper into the Roy family’s inner sanctum with indelible wit, humanity, and precision,” Francesca Orsi, HBO programming executive VP, said in a statement. “This season is undoubtedly no exception, and we couldn’t be more excited for all that’s in store in this next season ahead.”

Also starring in the series are Nicholas Braun, Matthew Macfadyen, Peter Friedman, J. Smith-Cameron, Dagmara Dominczyk, Justine Lupe, David Rasche, Fisher Stevens, Hiam Abbass, Arian Moayed, Harriet Walter, James Cromwell, Natalie Gold, Juliana Canfield, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, Zoë Winters and Jeannie Berlin returning. Additional cast includes Alexander Skarsgård, Sanaa Lathan, Linda Emond, Jihae, Adrien Brody, Hope Davis and Dasha Nekrasova.

Season three of hit drama Succession begins Sunday, Oct. 17 on HBO. There are nine episodes. Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook and Kieran Culkin are in the cast. 

The show explores themes of power and family dynamics through the eyes of Logan, patriarch of the obscenely wealthy Roy family. 

Season three finds Logan, played by Cox, scrambling to secure alliances after he was ambushed by son Kendall, portrayed by Strong, who exposed a family scandal. Tensions rise as a bitter corporate battle threatens to turn into a family civil war. 

Jesse Armstrong created Succession and is the showrunner. He spoke a bit about the new season during a TCA Summer Press Tour session. “We had that bomb dropped, the narrative bomb at the end of the season, so it felt like, let’s just pick up the pieces. There‘s a bit of a documentary-derived thing from the way that Adam McKay shot the pilot we‘ve always kept with. And I think we were just interested to see what would happen after that so we just followed those strands.”

During that session, Cox was asked about how his character is similar to King Lear, who he has played on stage. He mentioned “the idea of somebody dividing up their kingdom” in both works. 

“In Lear, he does it with his three daughters,” Cox added. “He’s hoping for someone to emerge that would be a worthy successor. So far we have no comers. And I think that the classical element is present. Whether we like it or not, we are influenced by archetypes, and Logan is an archetype. He does represent those kinds of things of authority. And also the downside is that he is a white dinosaur, so therefore he is near the end of his sell-by rate. He’s really coming to the end of it. And so that is very similar to Lear.”

Armstrong executive produces the show, along with Adam McKay, Frank Rich, Kevin Messick, Jane Tranter, Mark Mylod, Tony Roche, Scott Ferguson, Jon Brown, Lucy Prebble, Will Tracy and Will Ferrell.  

Season two debuted in summer 2019. 

 Hit drama Succession is back on HBO Sunday, Oct. 17. It is season three.

Succession won the Emmy for outstanding drama in 2020. Season two came out in summer 2019.

Hit drama Succession starts season three on HBO in October, the network teased on Twitter. A tweet from @Succession showed Brian Cox, who plays Roy patriarch Logan, sitting at a table, along with the lone word “October.”

HBO did not give a specific start date. 

Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin and Alan Ruck are also in the cast. 

A drama mixed with dark comedy, Succession is about the battles within a family of media moguls. Season two began in August 2019. Jesse Armstrong created the show. 

Succession got the outstanding drama Emmy in September 2020, along with several other Emmys, among other prestigious awards. 

Season three began filming in fall 2020 but sustained delays related to COVID. 

Armstrong, Adam McKay, Frank Rich, Kevin Messick, Will Ferrell, Jane Tranter, Mark Mylod, Tony Roche and Scott Ferguson executive produce Succession, with Armstrong the showrunner.

Long awaited season three of Succession starts on HBO in the fall. The series is about the fabulously wealthy, and feuding, Roy clan. 

Season two premiered in August of 2019. Jesse Armstrong created the show and is showrunner.

HBO did not give a specific premiere date. 

Brian Cox plays patriarch Logan Roy, head of a media conglomerate. Jeremy Strong plays ambitious but troubled son Kendall Roy. Sarah Snook is Logan’s enterprising daughter Siobhan and Kieran Culkin his slacker son Roman. 

Hiam Abbass, Alan Ruck, Nicholas Braun, Matthew Macfadyen, Peter Friedman, Rob Yang, J. Smith Cameron, Dagmara Dominczyk and Arian Moayed are also in the cast. 

The season three trailer shows Logan and Kendall bickering, and Shiobhan angling for the top spot in the corporation. 

The first two seasons had 10 episodes apiece. 

Succession won the Emmy for outstanding drama in 2020. Strong won outstanding lead actor in a drama.

Succession kept the best drama series Emmy at HBO as it won several major drama awards in the category.

Succession followed last year’s best drama series winner, Game of Thrones, in beating out a trio of Netflix shows (The Crown, Ozark and Stranger Things), AMC’s Better Call Saul, Hulu’s The Handmaid's Tale, BBC America’s Killing Eve and Disney Plus’ The Mandalorian for the award.

Zendaya was a surprise winner in the best actress in a drama category for her portrayal of troubled teenager Rue Bennett in HBO’s freshman series Euphoria. Zendaya topped Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show) Olivia Colman (The Crown), Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Laura Linney (Ozark) and Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) in winning her first Emmy.

Succession's Jeremy Strong was also a surprise winner in the lead actor in a drama series category, besting fellow series co-star Brian Cox, Jason Bateman (Ozark), Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us) and Billy Porter (Pose).

Succession also won an Emmy for outstanding writing and directing for a drama series. 

Billy Crudup won best supporting actor in a drama series for his role in  Apple TV Plus’ The Morning Show while Julia Garner (Netflix’s Ozark) won outstanding supporting actress in a drama series. 

Jimmy Kimmel kicked off the 72nd Emmys at an empty Staples Center, and acknowledged the elephant in the room, or at least the elephant watching from home. “Right now we need fun. My god, do we need fun,” he said of these COVID times. “This has been a miserable year.”

Kimmel spoke of the importance of television in the pandemic era, calling it “a friend who’s there for us 24 hours a day.”

Kimmel saluted Emmy winner Norman Lear, calling him a “miracle.”

“The only thing I’ll be producing when I’m 98 is phlegm,” said Kimmel.

Kimmel also praised Pop TV comedy Schitt’s Creek, and spoke about how network mandates said ABC has to put the show name on the screen whenever it’s mentioned, to avoid penalties for profanity. “Just in case you were wondering why network television is almost dead,” Kimmel quipped.

Jennifer Aniston gave out the outstanding lead actress in a comedy trophy. Catherine O’Hara of Schitt’s Creek won. 

“I will forever be grateful to Eugene and Daniel Levy,” she said, for giving her a character who gets to play “her ridiculous self.”

Netflix came in with 160 nominations, while HBO had 107. NBC had 47, ABC had 36, Fox had 33, Amazon had 30, Hulu had 26 and CBS had 23. 

Outstanding lead actor in a comedy went to Eugene Levy of Schitt’s Creek. “You see, I told you I was good,” he said. 

Levy thanked his wife and the cast, including O’Hara, who “evidently can make anyone she works with look good.” 

He saluted his children Daniel and Sarah, with Daniel taking “our show that we came up with and brilliantly guiding it to this little Emmy party tonight.”

Tracee Ellis Ross gave out the prize for outstanding writing for a comedy series. Daniel Levy of Schitt’s Creek got the honors. 

He thanked his father for “giving me the reins to this show...I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you.”

Levy thanked the writers for sharing their personal and often embarrassing stories, “so that the Rose family could be who they are.”

Next up was outstanding directing for a comedy series. Andrew Cividino and Daniel Levy of Schitt’s Creek got the win. Cividono saluted Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy, saying “their grace, their genius and their generosity bubbles through the entire set.”

Levy added that the show’s “incredible cast made it so, so easy to direct.”

Outstanding supporting actor in a comedy saw Daniel Levy once again claim the prize. “The internet’s about to turn on me,” he said. “I’m so sorry.”

He called Schitt’s Creek a “six-year master class” taught by “two brilliant comedic minds--my dad, Eugene Levy, and the magnificent Catherine O’Hara.”

Levy spoke about the show giving the cast the “safety and security to do what we wanted.”

Playing David Rose has been “the greatest experience of my life,” Levy added. 

Outstanding supporting actress in a comedy went to Annie Murphy of, yes, Schitt’s Creek. “The six years that I have spent working on this show have been the best six years of my life,” she said. 

Murphy said she’s “so proud to be part of a show that stands for love and kindness and inclusivity and acceptance.”

Jason Sudeikis honored the outstanding comedy series, which had HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm and Insecure, Dead to Me and The Kominsky Method on Netflix, The Good Place on NBC, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon, Pop TV’s Schitt’s Creek and What We Do in the Shadows on FX. 

Schitt’s Creek won. Daniel Levy said the show is about “the transformational effects of love and acceptance,” and how that’s something we desperately need today. He urged people to vote and apologized for getting political. 

Eugene Levy thanked Pop TV and Netflix, and his son Daniel, “who took our fish-out-of-water story and transformed it into a celebration of inclusivity, a castigation of homophobia and a declaration of the power of love.”

When Kimmel came back on, he noted how “The Canadians have won all the Emmys tonight,” and added how America still has the Stanley Cup.

Outstanding variety talk series was given out by David Letterman. Waiting for the “virtual applause to die down,” Letterman shared some jokes from hosting in 1986 that he said he found in the pocket of his tux. The Emmy went to HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. 

Oliver thanked producers Tim Carvell and Liz Stanton and said he was happy to be working these days. “We’ve all been very fortunate to be able to do our shows and not have to stop during the pandemic,” said Oliver. 

He thanked HBO and his wife and his staff. “I miss you so much and I honestly cannot wait until we’re in the same space together,” Oliver said of the Last Week Tonight staff.  

Outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie went to Regina King of HBO’s Watchmen. “This is so freakin’ weird,” she started. 

“It’s an honor to be in this category with you,” she said of her fellow nominees. “I truly love being a thespian.”

“Have a voting plan,” King added, urging viewers to “be a good human.” 

Lead actor in a limited series or movie was given to Mark Ruffalo of HBO’s I Know This Much Is True. Ruffalo thanked director Derek Cianfrance for “a great collaboration” and his fellow cast for bringing out the best in each other with their “career-defining performances.”

“I can’t be up here right now without you being there,” he added. 

Ruffalo credited the show’s crew for their “grit, determination, dignity and class.”
He said the show is about family. “We are stronger together when we love each other and respect each other’s dignity,” he said, urging viewers to “vote for love and compassion and kindness.”

Outstanding writing for a limited series or movie was given out by Randall Park. Damon Lindelof and Cord Jefferson won for their work on Watchmen. 

Jefferson singled out his therapist. “I am a different man than I was two years ago,” he said.

Jefferson also mentioned the African-American men and women who died in the Tulsa massacre of 1921. “I think we should never forget them,” he said. 

Outstanding directing for a limited series or movie was claimed by Maria Schrader of Netflix’s Unorthodox. “Being nominated for the Emmys already felt like a coronation,” she said. “I’m speechless.”

She credited Netflix and its execs for “accompanying it with so much knowledge and support.”

She described Unorthodox as “adventurous and powerful and at the same time a delicate story.”

Outstanding supporting actor in a limited series went to Yahya Abdul-Mateen II of Watchmen. He thanked HBO and Damon Lindelof “for your words, for your creativity.”

Watchmen is “a story about trauma, about the lasting scars of white domestic terrorism and police corruption,” he said, “and a guy who came down to Earth to reciprocate to a black woman all the love she deserved.”

“I’m so proud that i was able to walk into those shoes,” Abdul-Mateen added.

Outstanding supporting actress in a limited series or movie was given to Uzo Aduba of FX on Hulu’s Mrs. America. “I love you, ladies, you are all exceptional,” she said of her castmates. 

She offered a “tremendous thank you to FX,” to former Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, who she plays in the series, and “everyone who came together to tell this brilliant story.”

“Thank you beyond words,” Aduba added. 

Anthony Anderson gave out the Emmy for outstanding limited series. HBO’s Watchmen got the prize. Damon Lindelof thanked HBO and Warner Bros. “for their unblinking support.” 

He also thanked “every single person who invested nine hours of their life into Watchmen.”

Lindelof singled out the “victims and survivors in Tulsa in 1921.”

Kimmel noted Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s death, calling her a “tireless champion of equality and justice.” H.E.R. sang “Nothing Compares 2 U” as the tribute to Hollywood’s deceased rolled. 

Several times throughout the night, essential workers, not Hollywood stars, announced Emmy nominees. Those included a nurse, a UPS driver and a teacher. 

Next was outstanding competition program. RuPaul’s Drag Race on VH1 won. 

“We love making television,” said RuPaul. “It is an honor to make television. All the kids get to tell their stories on our show and it’s beautiful.”

Tyler Perry got the Governor’s Award from the Television Academy board. Chris Rock and Oprah Winfrey spoke on behalf of Perry. “It takes extraordinary grit and determination to navigate the rough terrain that often life can give you,” said Winfrey. “My friend Tyler Perry has done that against all odds.”

Rock spoke about Perry living in his car before he made it. “And of course Hollywood welcomed an independent black man with open arms,” said Rock. “Wait. I misread that.”

Winfrey called Perry a maverick and an innovator. 

Perry spoke about a quilt his grandmother gave him when he was a teen. He didn’t like it much and used it for odd jobs, such as drying off a wet dog. Years later, he saw a similar quilt in an antique shop. The shopkeeper explained how it was made of patches representing stages of the maker’s life. “I didn’t even recognize the value in my grandmother’s quilt,” said Perry. 

Perry said, “We all sew our own quilts with our thoughts, our behaviors, our experience and our memories.”

Speaking of his studio headquarters in Atlanta, Perry said, “We’re all coming together to add patches to a quilt as diverse as it can be.” 

Outstanding lead actor in a drama went to Jeremy Strong of HBO’s Succession. Strong, who plays Kendall, singled out the people who have “been there for me and believed in me when something like this felt basically impossible,” including family. 

He mentioned a Stephen Dunn poem about a book so good the reader finishes it for the rest of their life. “This job is that for me,” he said. 

Outstanding lead actress in a drama went to Zendaya of HBO’s Euphoria. “This is pretty crazy,” she said. 

Of the show’s cast and crew, Zendaya said, “I’m so lucky to go to work with you every day and so inspired by what you do.”

Amid these tough times, Zendaya said “there is hope in the young people.”

Kimmel quipped, “She’s younger than Baby Yoda.”

Outstanding writing for a drama went to Jesse Armstrong of Succession. 

“I love writing for this show so very much, and for this amazing cast and crew,” he said from London.

Outstanding directing for a drama went to Andrij Parekh of Succession. “The show’s been such a professional dream,” he said. 

Parekh dedicated his Emmy to “all the kids whose names, like mine, are difficult to pronounce.” 

Outstanding supporting actor in a drama was claimed by Billy Crudup of Apple TV+’s The Morning Show. He thanked “everybody at Apple for the wonderful opportunity.”

“I’m glad to have delivered something for you,” he said. 

Outstanding supporting actress in a drama went to Julia Garner of Netflix’s Ozark. 

“I’m shocked, to be honest,” she said. 

Garner made a point of showing “gratitude to all the women in this category. You are the reason why I’m acting in the first place.”

Finally, outstanding drama was given out by Sterling K. Brown. It was between Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, AMC’s Better Call Saul, Netflix’s The Crown, Stranger Things and Ozark, BBC America’s Killing Eve, Disney+’s The Mandalorian and HBO’s Succession. 

Succession got the honors. 

“This is such a very nice moment,” said Armstrong, who lamented not being able to share it with his cast and crew and fellow writers and producers. “This is a wonderful achievement for the whole group.”

Armstrong gave out a series of “un-thank you’s” to COVID, President Trump for his “crummy and uncoordinated response” to COVID, Boris Johnson for the same, “nationalist and quasi-nationalist governments” for getting in the way of combating the virus, and “the media moguls who keep them in power,” said Armstrong. 

 HBO, led by its drama series Watchmen, drew the most TCA Awards wins, the Television Critics Association announced Monday.

The TCA Awards, which are usually announced during a July live ceremony but this year was not held in person due to the COVID-19 pandemic, honored HBO with six awards, topping all other cable, broadcast and streaming networks. Pop TV was the only other network to earn multiple awards, drawing two awards for its comedy series Schitt’s Creek.

HBO’s Watchmen won four awards, including an Individual Achievement In Drama honor for series star Regina King as well as an Outstanding Movie, Miniseries, Or Special; Outstanding New Program, and the Program Of The Year award, said TCA. 

CBS’ iconic series Star Trek earned the organization’s Heritage Award, while longtime Jeopardy! Host Alex Trebek was honored with the Career Achievement award. 

“Entertainment and culture are intertwined and in this challenging year, never has that intersection been more crucial as both a mirror to examine tough reflections and a rabbit hole to escape the noise and scares outside our homes. The 2019-2020 television season was both a challenge and a balm,” said Sarah Rodman, TCA President and executive editor at Entertainment Weekly in a statement. “This year offered up many high-quality options appealing to a wide swath of audiences with eclectic subjects ranging from sports and superheroes, to side-splitting sitcoms, darkly fascinating dramas, insightful documentaries, kid-friendly series, and more. We are excited to see what the future of television has in store, and we look forward to celebrating in-person next year as we come together to honor this medium that means so much to all of us.”

Netflix and HBO were the big winners during Sunday’s Critics Choice Awards, securing the most wins in the television category.

HBO led all services with six awards, including best drama series for Succession, according to the Broadcast Television Journalists Association. Netflix took home five awards in the television category and nine overall awards, including theatrical films.

Amazon’s Fleabag won three awards, including best comedy series, to top all shows. The win was the third best comedy series accolade for Fleabag this awards season, matching its Emmy and Golden Globes awards.

Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear's All in the Family and The Jeffersons

HBO fought off a strong showing from streaming services Amazon Prime and Hulu to finish with the most Golden Globes Awards wins on Sunday night, according to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

HBO finished with four Golden Globe Award wins from its 15 nominations, topping all cable networks and streaming services (the broadcast networks were shut out of this year's nominations). Amazon Prime Video and Hulu were the only other distributors to win multiple awards with two each during NBC’s live awards telecast.

Netflix, which led all networks and streaming services with 17 Globe award nominations, finished with just one win in the television category: the best actress in a TV drama series award for Olivia Colman for her starring role in The Crown.

HBO was paced by two wins each for Succession, including best TV drama series honors, and for Chernobyl, which won the Globe for best limited series or motion picture made for television.

Amazon Prime’s Fleabag also won two Golden Globe Awards, including best comedy series and best actress in a comedy series for Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The sophomore series matched its wins in the same categories during the Emmy Awards this past September.

Tom Hanks and Ellen DeGeneres were awarded lifetime achievement awards during the telecast, which was hosted by Ricky Gervais.

TNT’s medical-themed reality series Chasing The Cure tops the list of new series debuting during the week of Aug. 5 to Aug. 11.

The live series, hosted by Ann Curry, seeks to help people who suffer from undiagnosed, misdiagnosed or uncured medical mysteries by linking patients with medical experts to help find answers, according to network officials.

On the returning series front, HBO will will bring back its freshman drama series Succession for its sophomore campaign on Aug. 11.

21st Century Fox CEO James Murdoch’s flirtation with the top spot at The Walt Disney Co. may have to wait a bit, after a report in the Wall Street Journal said current Disney chair and CEO Bob Iger would likely extend his employment deal at the company should it acquire certain assets from Fox.

Disney is reportedly in deep discussions with Fox concerning the purchase of its movie studio, regional sports networks, cable channels FX and National Geographic and other assets valued at more than $60 billion.

According to reports, people familiar with the matter speculated that one of the benefits of the deal would be that Murdoch could step in to replace Iger as CEO, thus solving a nagging succession problem at Disney over the past several years. Iger had originally intended to retire as chairman and CEO at Disney in 2015, but has extended his deal each year – he is scheduled to step down in 2019 – as a successor has been hard to find.

Former Disney chief operating officer Thomas Staggs was the last serious candidate considered for the role,  but he resigned from the company in 2016 after it became apparent that he did not have the support of the Disney board of directors.

The deal, which could be announced as early as next week, would likely take until the end of 2018 to obtain all the necessary federal approvals, the Journal said. Integrating the assets could take up to another year, and would be even more difficult with a new CEO at the helm, adding to the need for Iger to extend his current contract. It is plausible that James Murdoch could take over as Disney CEO in 2020, once the integration is complete.  

Murdoch has reportedly been under pressure at Fox after weathering sexual harassment scandals at its Fox News unit and a phone-hacking scandal at its U.K. tabloid newspapers in 2012.  According to an earlier report in the Journal, Murdoch has at times “felt like a CEO in title only.”

The Walt Disney Co. said Thursday that it has named Thomas Staggs as chief operating officer, a move that could put the long-time executive a step closer to the CEO spot expected to open once Disney chief Bob Iger retires in 2018.

Staggs has long been a top candidate to succeed Iger. A 25-year Disney veteran, he served as chief financial officer of the company from 1998 to 2010 when he was moved to head up its Parks & Resorts division, which many believed was an attempt to give him more operational experience.He switched jobs with then Parks & Resorts chairman Jay Rasulo, who was named CFO at the time. Rasulo remains CFO.

Iger recently signed a new employment deal that will keep him chairman and CEO through 2018.

Staggs will assume the COO role immediately and will continue to head Parks & Resorts until a successor is found.

Disney’s senior management team, including all business segment leaders, will report jointly to Iger and Staggs, with the exception of the CFO, General Counsel, Chief Communications Officer and Chief Human Resources Officer, who will continue to report directly to Iger.

Staggs joined Disney in 1990 as Manager of Strategic Planning and was named CFO in 1998. Before joining Disney, he worked in investment banking at Morgan Stanley & Co.

As CFO for twelve years, he spearheaded the realignment of Disney’s performance goals toward the combination of profit growth and strong long-term capital returns and free cash flow.  He has been praised by Wall Street for his financial and communications skills, and was consistently voted the entertainment industry’s No. 1 CFO by Institutional Investor magazine.
