The National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC) will honor late ESPN sports personality Stuart Scott with its 2015 Mickey Leland Humanitarian Achievement Award, the network said Monday.

Scott, who passed away in January after a long bout with cancer, will receive the award posthumously during NAMIC’s May 7 breakfast at the INTX show, said the diversity organization.

The Mickey Leland Humanitarian Achievement Award, created in 1992 in memory of the late Congressman from Texas, is NAMIC’s highest honor and recognizes individuals and companies representing the media, entertainment and communications industry for their philanthropic achievements and commitment to advancing the concerns of people of color.

Last month Scott received a posthumous award from the T Howard Foundation during the diversity organization's fundraising dinner.

"NAMIC is honored to pay tribute to Stuart Scott, one of our industry’s great leaders that fostered humanism and diversity in sportscasting and in his courageous fight against cancer,” said Eglon E. Simons, president and CEO of NAMIC in a statement.

Added ESPN president and co-chairman, Disney Media Networks John Skipper: “We appreciate NAMIC recognizing our wonderful friend and colleague in such a meaningful way.  Stuart Scott’s inspirational spirit is a major part of his legacy and this honor helps capture his remarkable impact.”

Veteran ESPN personality Stuart Scott died after al ong battle with cancer, the network announced Sunday morning.

Scott, 49, joined ESPN in 1993 for the launch of ESPN2 and quickly became a leading voice on ESPN’s flagship sports news program SportsCenter. During his 21-year career at the sports network, he hosted a variety of sports programs, including NFL and NBA programing and covered such big sports events as the NBA Finals, Super Bowl, Major League Baseball playoff and the World Series.

Scott had also worked as a regular contributor to ESPN: The Magazine, ESPN Radio, and ESPN.com.

“ESPN and everyone in the sports world have lost a true friend and a uniquely inspirational figure in Stuart Scott,” said ESPN president John Skipper in a statement.  “Who engages in mixed martial arts training in the midst of chemotherapy treatments?   Who leaves a hospital procedure to return to the set?  His energetic and unwavering devotion to his family and to his work while fighting the battle of his life left us in awe, and he leaves a void that can never be replaced.”

Scott is survived by his two daugthers, Taelor and Sydni, his parents O. Ray and Jacqueline Scott; and his three siblings -- veteran cable executive Susan Scott, Stephen Scott, Synthia Kearney, and their families.
