The final voyage of Paramount Plus's Star Trek: Picard series leads a busy week of new and returning shows premiering during the President’s Day holiday week.  

The third and final season of Paramount Plus’s Star Trek spinoff debuts February 16 and reunites Patrick Stewart’s iconic Jean Luc Picard character with other characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation, including Geordi La Forge (played by LeVar Burton), Worf (Michael Dorn), Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) as they fight a new enemy, according to Paramount Plus. 

Also returning February 16 is the third season of Netflix's Emmy-nominated comedy series The Upshaws, starring Kim Fields, Mike Epps and Wanda Sykes.

The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard is on Paramount Plus February 16. Patrick Stewart plays retired Starfleet Admiral Jean-Luc Picard. 

Terry Matalas, showrunner and executive producer, spoke about why the show is only lasting for three seasons at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour last month. “One of the north stars that we were following was that Jean-Luc Picard and his Next Generation cast really never got a final sendoff,” he said. “It felt like, after [film] Star Trek: Nemesis, there wanted to be one more final story. And we were faced with a really unique opportunity to do one last season, telling a Picard story, first and foremost, a very personal story. And how better to end that journey than to look back at the beginning and to bring his friends and family from Star Trek: The Next Generation?”

Alex Kurtzman, executive producer, did not say for sure Picard is ending after season three. “If the show blows the doors off the place, as we certainly are hoping it would. — and we're very, very proud of season three — who knows?” he said. 

Stewart said he could be convinced to keep playing the character. “If we can maintain the work that we did on season one, two and three of Picard, then absolutely, yes, because there is still enormous potential for narrative in what we've been doing,” he said. 

Paramount Plus’s Star Trek originals also include Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Prodigy, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks. 

Star Trek: Picard began on CBS All Access back in 2020. 

Stewart was hardly a Trekkie when he was first asked about playing Picard, though his children were a different story. “I remember coming home after matinees from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre just in time to be able to give my kids their supper and read to them and put them to bed before going back to do an evening performance,” he said. “And I would find that they were watching this thing on television with these guys in colored T-shirts. And that's all I remember. I knew nothing about it.” ■

Paramount Plus celebrated Star Trek Day on September 8 with a batch of announcements, including season three of Star Trek: Picard arriving on the network February 16. Star Patrick Stewart introduced a trailer from the third season, which will be the final one. There will be ten episodes. 

Star Trek Day is held September 8, as that is the day Star Trek premiered back in 1966. The event happened in Los Angeles and was live-streamed. 

Picard cast members Stewart, Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd were at the event. Stewart plays Jean-Luc Picard, as he did on Star Trek: The Next Generation. 

The series is produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

Paramount Plus also debuted a clip from season two of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds at the event. Carol Kane will join season two as Pelia. “Highly educated and intelligent, this engineer suffers no fools,” according to Paramount Plus. “Pelia solves problems calmly and brusquely, thanks to her many years of experience.” 

Rebecca Romijn, Celia Rose Gooding and Jess Bush are in the cast. Strange New Worlds  is based on the years Captain Christopher Pike manned the U.S.S. Enterprise. 

Strange New Worlds is produced by CBS Studios, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. 

Animated kids show Star Trek: Prodigy has its mid-season return October 27 on Paramount Plus. A trailer, showing the U.S.S. Protostar crew and character Murf as he completes his “metamurfosis,” was shared. 

Billy Campbell is joining the voice cast. Brett Gray, Kate Mulgrew and Ella Purnell are in the cast. 

Prodigy follows a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search of a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered, but get to know Starfleet and the ideals it represents.

Star Trek: Prodigy is produced by CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, Nickelodeon Animation, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. 

Paramount Plus also released a sneak peek of a scene from animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks. Mike McMahan created the series. Season three began August 25. Star Trek: Discovery cast member Wilson Cruz offered a behind-the-scenes tour of the set. 

Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones  and Anthony Rapp are also in the Discovery cast. ■

The second season of the Paramount Plus original series Star Trek: Picard will premiere March 3 and will feature Whoopi Goldberg reprising her role from the original Star Trek: The Next Generation series, the streaming service revealed Friday.

The series will feature Goldberg in the role of Guinan, who will appear throughout the show's sophomore campaign, according to the streaming service.  

According to Paramount Plus, season two of Star Trek: Picard, "takes the legendary Jean-Luc Picard and his crew on a bold and exciting new journey: into the past. Picard must enlist friends both old and new to confront the perils of 21st century Earth in a desperate race against time to save the galaxy’s future – and face the ultimate trial from one of his greatest foes," said the service.

The series stars Patrick Stewart, Alison Pill, Jeri Ryan, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Orla Brady, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera and Brent Spiner.

Paramount Plus has ordered a fifth season for Star Trek: Discovery, while Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for a second season ahead of the series premiere May 5.

“Four years ago, we made a promise to grow Star Trek into something it had never been before, and thanks to the incredibly hard work done by our many talented showrunners, writers and directors, along with the extraordinary support of CBS Studios and Paramount Plus, we’re keeping our word,” said Alex Kurtzman, architect and executive producer, Star Trek. “Now our current shows are set up for the future as we work to build Trek’s next phase of programming for years to come.”

Season four of Star Trek: Discovery returns February 10. Star Trek: Picard starts season two on Paramount Plus March 3.

Among the animated Star Trek shows on Paramount Plus, Star Trek: Lower Decks returns with season three in summer 2022. The network has ordered a fourth season. Season one of Star Trek: Prodigy returned January 6. ■

Paramount Plus released a preview trailer for its sci-fi drama series, 'Star Trek: Picard,' which will return for its second season in February 2022.

In the trailer, series star Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his crewmates are transported back to an alternate timeline to stop a "totalitarian nightmare" that could destroy the universe. 

Along with Stewart, Star Trek: Picard stars Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera, Michelle Hurd, Alison Pill and Evan Evagora. 

CBS All-Access Friday announced the development on a new live-action series based on the iconic Star Trek sci-fi franchise, the streaming service said Friday.  

The new series, Star Trek-Strange New Worlds,follows current CBS-All Access series Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard, and will feature iconic Star Trek characters Spock, Captain Pike and Number One played by Ethan Peck, Anson Mount and Rebecca Romijn, respectively, said the streaming service. 

The new series will follow the characters, which were introduced during the second season of Star Trek: Discovery, as they explore new worlds around the galaxy in the decade before Captain Kirk boarded the U.S.S. Enterprise, said the service.

“Fans fell in love with Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck’s portrayals of these iconic characters when they were first introduced on Star Trek: Discovery last season,” said Julie McNamara, executive VP and head of programming for CBS All Access in a statement. “This new series will be a perfect complement to the franchise, bringing a whole new perspective and series of adventures to Star Trek.”

Also in development at CBS All Access is an animated series, Star Trek: Lower Decks and a Section 31-based series starring Michelle Yeoh.

ViacomCBS said that its streaming service had a record number of signups for a month in January, getting a boost from the premiere of Star Trek: Picard plus promotion during the CBS broadcast of the Grammy Awards.

CBS All Access’ previous record for signups came last February when CBS broadcast the Super Bowl. The week of Super Bowl LIII was the best week ever for CBS All Access in terms of signup. Last week was second best, the company said.

CBS said the premiere of Star Trek: Picard drove a record for total streams and the highest volume of subscribers streaming an original series on the service. Streams were up 115% and subscribers streaming was up 180% from the previous record, set by Star Trek: Discovery.

“We’ve seen tremendous continued growth in the service, and the new records we’ve experienced due to Star Trek: Picard, the Grammy’s and a fantastic season of football are a phenomenal way to kick off what will be a fantastic year for CBS All Access,” said Marc DeBevoise, chief digital officer, ViacomCBS, and president and CEO, CBS Interactive. “CBS All Access continues to build upon its great mix of programming — from original series, to sports and special events — and we’ve strategically programmed 2020 to bring subscribers an ‘always on’ calendar of must-watch series and events.”

CBS also said yesterday’s award show was the most-streamed Grammys on CBS All Access. The Grammys drove 80% more new signup than last year and 30% more unique viewers.

Two years after launching Star Trek: Discovery, and achieving only middling results while trying to reboot the venerable sci-fi franchise with new characters and largely unproven stars, CBS All Access is handing the ship over to one of its most reliable stewards ... er, Stewarts.

Star Trek: Picard begins on CBS All Access today, Jan. 23. Sir Patrick Stewart plays Jean-Luc Picard. There are 10 episodes. 

Alison Pill, Isa Briones, Evan Evagora, Michelle Hurd and Santiago Cabera are also in the cast. 

Stewart played Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Stewart spoke about revisiting the role at TCA press tour in Pasadena earlier this month. “There was actually nothing that strange to be stepping into Star Trek:  Picard, because he's never actually left me,” he said. “He has always been there, and it's a relationship that I am happy to continue with. That's an understatement. I'm absolutely thrilled to continue.” 

Executive producers on Star Trek: Picard are Alex Kurtzman, Michael Chabon, Akiva Goldsman and Heather Kadin. Chabon is the author of the novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. 

CBS All Access costs $5.99 monthly with commercials and $9.99 without. It debuted Star Trek: Discovery in 2017.

Pasadena, Calif. — CBS All Access picks up a second season for Star Trek: Picard, Julie McNamara, executive VP of original content for CBS All Access announced Sunday during the service's TCA winter press tour session.

Season one is set to premiere Jan. 23.

“The energy and excitement around the premiere of Star Trek: Picard has reached a magnitude greater than all of us at CBS All Access could have hoped for,” said McNamara in a statement. “We’re thrilled to announce plans for a second season before the series’ debut, and we are confident that Star Trek fans and new viewers alike will be captured by the stellar cast and creative team’s meticulously crafted story when it premieres on Jan. 23.”

The service will drop new episodes of the series, which sees Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Jean-Luc Picard, on Thursdays. The first season is 10 episodes.
