Sports Illustrated is once again trying to get into the video business, this time launching a streaming version of Sports Illustrated TV on Amazon Channels.

Amazon Prime members can subscribe to SI TV for $4.99 a month. The channel will be accessible through the Prime Video app on TVs, streaming media players, mobile devices, Amazon Fire TV, Fire TV Stick and Fire tablets or online at Amazon.com/amazonchannels.

Sports Illustrated was part of Time Warner before the company spun off its troubled Time Inc. publishing businesses. SI the magazine is cutting its print run to just 27 issues this year.

Time Warner offered a CNN Sports Illustrated cable channel in 1996, but the network was unable to get enough distribution amid competition from ESPN, Fox and others.

Turner sportscaster Craig Sager, who is battling cancer,  is on the May 2 cover of Sports Illustrated.

In the story, Sager’s positive outlook is described, along with facts about his long career as a sideline reporter covering NBA games.

The story features NBA stars LeBron James and Chris Paul, along with TNT teammate Ernie Johnson talking about how Sager is regarded. Following are some highlights from the story:

Sager on staying strong: “I don’t like to complain. I don’t want people to go, ‘Look what happened to Sager, that’s so sad, that’s not the guy I knew.’ Then they won’t come see me.”

Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron Jameson seeing Sager on the sidelines of his games: “Whenever Craig Sager is covering your game, you know it’s a big one. But when I look over and see him covering our game right now. . . Talking about it makes me sentimental.”

Sports Illustrated Thursday said it has launched a new digital channel that will feature original, sports-themed films.

Sports Illustrated Films will debut on the newly created SI.com/films channel and will feature content created from filmmakers within SI parent Time Inc. as well as outside the company, said officials.  SI will launch six films before the end of the year.

Two new films released today on the site include Brett Favre: Life After the Game, which profiles the NFL legendary quarterback, and The Rise and Fall of the Danbury Trashers, about a minor league hockey team based on a 2014 Sports Illustrated story.

The site will also feature an archive of more than 40 SI productions, including all three seasons of its series Underdogs, said officials.  

As part of the initiative, SI has reached a production agreement with Mandalay Sports Media and Velocity to produce a variety of programming under the “Sports Illustrated Films” banner, according to officials. Mandalay will produce Patrick and ‘Zo, focusing on the rivalry and friendship between legendary NBA centers Patrick Ewing and Alonzo Mourning, while Velocity will develop a new video franchise devoted to the greatest moments in sports.

“We see amazing potential for Sports Illustrated-branded programming both domestically and internationally, and we are going to pursue those opportunities very aggressively,” said J.R. McCabe, senior vice president of Time Inc. Video in a statement. “Today’s announcements reflect the vision we have for many of our brands.”
