Live-streaming video service YouTube TV suffered a service disruption this afternoon causing its viewers to miss portions of Fox broadcasting’s live telecast of the England-Croatia World Cup semifinals match, but restored service before the end of the contest.

YouTube TV’s live streaming signal went down during the second half of the England-Croatia game. The service posted a tweet around 3 pm (ET), calling the timing of the streaming issues “horrible.”

Within an hour, YouTube TV sent out a second tweet stating that the service was restored. YouTube TV subscribers were able to watch Croatia defeat England to advance to the World Cup final Sunday against France.

While people were tweeting about the outage, sports-centric virtual MVPD FuboTV got into the act, replying to one Twitter user looking for an alternative to "Come to @fuboTV, we have cookies.. and all games in Full HD." 

YouTube TV subscribers pay $40 a month for a lineup of more than 60 channels, including national sports services ESPN, FS1, MLB Network and NBA TV, as well as most regional sports services. As of Thursday the service had not publicly offered an explanation for the glitch.

Internet surfers across the country were socked with a massive service outage beginning around noon on Friday, after two fiber lines belonging to a third party vendor to Comcast were cut in Manhattan, leaving customers from several ISPs without access.

The service problems appear to gave started around 12:30 p.m., and seemed to be initially confined to Northeast ISPs, but according to social media complaints, quickly spread as far west as California.

Comcast’s customer care operation tweeted later that one of its large backbone network partners experienced a fiber cut. Because that line also served as a backbone to several other service providers, they too were expected to experience intermittent outages.

“We identified two, separate and unrelated fiber cuts to our network backbone providers" Comcast said in a statement. "Our engineers worked to address the issue immediately and services are now being restored to business and residential internet, video and voice customers. We again apologize to anyone who was impacted.”

Charter spokesman Justin Venech said he was unaware of any large service disruptions for the carrier, but said it was aware of the Comcast problems.

Newsday reporter Joan Gralla tweeted that one of the fiber lines that were cut serviced New York City to Chicago, the other between Ashburn and South Carolina.

According to website Downdetector.com, which tracks service outages via social media, the problems started with Comcast but quickly spread to other ISPs.

Thousands of Comcast subscribers across the country were without Internet and TV service for a few hours Monday morning, but the company said most customers had been restored as of Monday afternoon.

According to website Downdetector.com, more than 17,000 Comcast customers lost service at about 11:30 a.m. on Monday. By 1:22 p.m., most customers were back in service.  cause fo eth outage wasn't immediately determined.

According to Downdetector.com, which monitors telecom outages across the country, affected areas included New York, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Philadelphia, Seattle, Portland, Minneapolis, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

“We have repaired the temporary network interruption that impacted some of our services this morning,” Comcast said in a statement.  “Our engineers continue to work on this issue and almost all services have already been restored.  We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused our customers.”

Comcast also kept customers informed about the outage and the work to restore service through its website and social media.
