Starz didn’t wait for the November 6 premiere of Dangerous Liaisons to greenlight a second season of the series. 

The second season of Dangerous Liaisons, the latest iteration of the classic period drama, will begin production in 2023 in Prague, according to the network. The series is based on Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ 18th century novel focusing on the origin story of how his iconic characters, the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, met as passionate young lovers in Paris on the eve of the revolution. 

The eight-episode first season of Dangerous Liaisons launches November 8 on the linear Starz service as well as on the Starz app, all Starz streaming and on-demand platforms, and internationally on the Lionsgate Plus premium streaming platform across Europe, Latin America and Japan, said the network. 

“‘Dangerous Liaisons’ is addictive, provocative and beautifully rendered,” Starz president of original programming Kathryn Busby said in a statement. “This prelude to the famed 18th century novel illuminates pre-revolution Paris at its most decadent. We are confident that by the end of season one viewers will be craving more scheming and seduction.”

Dangerous Liaisons stars Alice Englert, Nicholas Denton, Lesley Manville, Kosar Ali, Carice van Houten, Hilton Pelser, Fisayo Akinade, Michael McElhatton, Nathanael Saleh, Colette Dalal Tchantcho, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Tom Wlaschiha, and Paloma Faith.

The series is executive produced by Harriet Warner, Colin Callender, Tony Krantz, Scott Huff, and Christopher Hampton.■

HBO Max has greenlit a new season for its freshman series The Sex Lives of College Girls.

The series, which follows the lives of four freshman college roommates as they explore their new, free lives on campus, will end its 10-episode first season Dec. 9 on the streaming service. The series stars Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, Reneé Rapp and Alyah Chanelle Scott.

The Sex Lives of College Girls is executive produced by Mindy Kaling, Howard Klein and Justin Noble. 

“Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble have created and written a show that is full of heart, female friendships, and awkward naked parties” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content, HBO Max in a statement. “We are delighted that this comic, honest portrayal of the college condition has resonated for everyone, whether they had sex in college or not. USA Network and Syfy announced the renewal of original horror-themed series Chucky for a second season, ahead of the show’s first season finale tonight (Nov. 30).

The series, based on based on the Child’s Play killer doll movie franchise, follows high school teenager Jake (Zackary Arthur) who brings home a familiar-looking doll from a a local yard sale, setting off a series of horrifying events that begins to expose the town’s deep hypocrisies and hidden secrets, according to the network.

“We’re thrilled to start pulling the strings on a second season of puppet mayhem with Chucky,” said executive producer Don Mancini in a statement. “Many thanks to our partners at USA, SYFY and UCP for their incredible support and guidance bringing Chucky to the small screen, bigger than ever. And to the fans, Chucky sends his still-undying thanks, and a message: ‘This isn’t over, not by a long shot. You better watch your backs in 2022!’” ■ 

TBS has greenlit a new comedy series, Kill the Orange-Faced Bear, starring Damon Wayans Jr.

The comedy series follows one man’s epic revenge journey after a bear eats his girlfriend, said the network. Along with Wayans, the series stars Jessy Hodges, Alex Karpovksy and Nate Torrence. Also lending their voices to the series are Sarah Silverman, Nicole Byer and Sam Richardson. 

The series is executive produced by Wayans, Romanski, Trevor Engelson, Steven Fisher, Alex Karpovsky and Jake Szymanski.

“I’ve loved the idea for Kill the Orange-Faced Bear from the minute we heard the pitch and felt that it was a dead center shot at the target of popular absurdist humor we’ve become known for,” said Brett Weitz, General Manager, TNT, TBS, and truTV in a statement.  

The network also announced a fourth season renewal for its comedy series Miracle Workers, starring Daniel Radcliffe and Steve Buscemi.

Disney Channel will resurrect it’s successful series crossover programming stunt on  July 24 by bringing together two of its biggest shows, Raven’s Home and Bunk’d, for a primetime special.

Disney vice president of current series Kory Lunsford, who has worked on the previous 10 network series crossover specials dating back to 2007 with the That’s So Suite Life of Hanna Montana event, talks to Multichannel News about the popularity of the specials as well as why the pairing of these two shows will resonate with the network’s core tween audience. An edited version of the interview appears below. 

What’s been behind the previous success of Disney’s crossover series strategy?

I’ve actually worked on every single one of the crossover episodes going back to That’s So Suite  Life of Hannah Montana. They are fun, and this one fell in place. There was a clamoring among our showrunners and writers to want to do one and we wanted to make a big summer splash for the channel, and I think we accomplished that.

Why did Raven’s Home and Bunk’d work best in a crossover special?

You want to make sure you’re authentic in creating these shows. When we had That’s So Suite Life of Hannah Montana you had the [Suite Life of Zack & Cody] hotel serve as the gathering point. We thought, ‘what's a more fun and aspirational setting than summer camp?’ These two shows resonate the most with our audience so that was a great starting off point. They also have great, diverse ensemble casts. We were able to work with each camp -- no pun intended - to mix and match characters from each show and were able to create multiple, rich storylines.

Raven About Bunk’d is premiering in a different television environment than the first  Disney series crossover event in that fewer young viewers are now watching linear television. Do you feel this special will attract more eyeballs to the linear Disney Channel service?

Back in the day if we made it, everyone tuned in. What we’ve learned over the years as consumer viewing patterns have shifted is that if you make great content, viewers will find it. We’re focused on all platforms that offer our content -- whether it’s Disney Now or Disney Plus -- so it's all about making content that appeals to our viewers. We know word of mouth is very powerful with our audience these days, so we believe in our content and know that this story will be aspirational and will resonate with our audience.

Will you look to do future crossover specials featuring other Disney Channel shows?

Absolutely, and it’s something that we’ve already discussed. They are a bit challenging -- it takes two separate production entities merging together and working together when they normally don’t -- but they’re usually always successful. 

History has tapped Laurence Fishburne to host a new non-fiction series that will look at infamous mysteries throughout history.

The series, History's Greatest Mysteries, will investigate the circumstances surrounding such iconic historical mysteries as the Titanic, Roswell, the Bermuda Triangle and John Wilkes Booth, that have captured the fascination and attention of millions, according to the network. 

Each program within the franchise will showcase fresh, new evidence and perspectives including never-before-released documents to the general public, personal diaries and DNA evidence to unearth brand-new information about these infamous and enigmatic chapters in history, said History officials.

Fishburne (Black-ish, John Wick, The Matrix) will host and narrate the series, which is set to debut later this summer, according to History.

“Our audience has an interest in the full story behind iconic historical moments,” said Eli Lehrer, Executive Vice President and General Manager for History in a statement. “This new banner will change the way we look at history as we know it, while sparking new, compelling conversations.”

Starz has given an eight-episode series order for comedy pilot Run the World, the network said Thursday.

The series follows a group of Black best friends who work, live and play in Harlem as they strive for world domination, according to network executives. Yvette Lee Bowser (Dear White People, Living Single) will serve as showrunner for the half-hour series, which was created by Leigh Davenport (The Perfect Find.)

“Run the World is exactly the kind of bold, authentic, inclusive storytelling that Starz is committed to delivering to our global audience,” said Jeffrey Hirsch, president and CEO of Starz in a statement. “We feel as though we have captured lightning in a bottle with the energy and chemistry of this cast and their portrayal of these distinct characters in this modern-day view of four female friends in New York City and we look forward to bringing the series to the platform.”

Epix will unveil its version of HG Wells classic story War of The Worlds on Feb. 16, the network said Thursday.

The eight part series is a contemporary re-telling of the classic sci-fi tale in which an alien force comes to earth and wipes out all of mankind with the exception of a few pockets of humanity, said network officials.

War of the Worlds features an ensemble cast including Gabriel Byrne, Elizabeth McGovern, Léa Drucker, Natasha Little, Daisy Edgar Jones, Stéphane Caillard, Adel Bencherif and Guillaume Gouix.

The drama series is produced by Urban Myth Films, in partnership with CANAL+, Fox Networks Group (FNG) Europe & Africa and AGC Television, and executive produced by Howard Overman, Julian Murphy and Johnny Capps for Urban Myth Films.

“We at Epix are thrilled to be working with the teams at Urban Myth and Studiocanal to showcase Howard Overman’s masterful take on this classic story,” said network president Michael Wright in a statement. “We can’t wait to bring this cinematic and addictive series to our audience.”

Epix has renewed its original drama series Pennyworth for a second season, the pay service announced Wednesday.

The series, from Warner Horizon Scripted Television, follows Bruce Wayne’s legendary butler, Alfred Pennyworth (played by Jack Bannon), a former British SAS soldier who goes to work with young billionaire Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge), who has not yet become Bruce Wayne’s father, in 1960s London.

“Pennyworth has been a big hit for us, embraced by critics and fans alike,” saidMichael Wright, Epix president in a statement. “It was the highest-performing original series ever to premiere on Epix, more than doubling the viewership of the shows that came before it. We can’t wait to work with this phenomenal cast and creative team on another exciting season.”

The series also stars Emma Paetz (Gentleman Jack), Hainsley Lloyd Bennett (Eastenders), Ryan Fletcher (Outlander), Dorothy Atkinson (Mr. Turner, Topsy-Turvy), Ian Puleston-Davies (Coronation Street) and Polly Walker (Rome, Caprica).

USA Network has picked up a second season of its horror/drama series The Purge, the network announced Tuesday.

The sophomore season renewal of the series -- based on the popular movie franchise of the same name – comes as the show ends its freshman run on Nov. 6. The Blumhouse Television/Universal Cable Productions produced show is averaging 2.3 million total viewers and 1.2 million 18-49 year old viewers.

FX has renewed its original drama series Mr. Inbetween for a second season, the network said Tuesday.

The Australian show, created by and starring Scott Ryan, will return for a second season in 2019. Mr. Inbetween is averaging 2.25 million viewers across all linear and non-linear platforms in Nielsen Live+7 numbers, said the network.

“It’s been fantastic to see Mr. Inbetween embraced by fans and critics. The exciting, offbeat and fast moving first season is defined by the magnetic performance and creative vision of Scott Ryan and director Nash Edgerton,” said Eric Schrier, co-president of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions in a statement. “Our thanks to Nash and Scott, our partners at FOXTEL, fellow executive producer Jason Burrows, producer Michele Bennett, and the great cast and crew. We can’t wait to return to Ray’s world in season two of Mr Inbetween.”

Fox’s recently canceled drama series Lucifer will get a second life after Netflix said it will produce a fourth season of the series, according to published reports.

The series, which will resume on Netflix in 2019, gets a reprieve after Fox broadcasting cancelled the show last month following the series’ third season.

The show’s return was aided by a massive social media outcry under the hashtag #savelucifer. Series showrunner Joe Henderson took to Twitter to celebrate the show’s new life and to thank fans for their support of the show.

Lucifer is the second cancelled Fox series to get new life on another outlet this spring, following NBC’s recent pickup of comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It also follows Amazon’s pickup last month of cancelled Syfy space-themed series The Expanse.

Disney Channel has greenlit a second season of comedy series Raven’s Home, the network announced Tuesday.

The series, a spinoff of the network’s successful 2000s series That’s So Raven, features Raven Symoné reprising her role as Raven Baxter from the original series. The July premiere of Raven’s Home was the top cable Tv series premiere in two years among kids 6-11, Tweens 9-14 and Kids 2-11, said network officials.

Symoné serves as executive producer of the series along with Dava Savel (That's So Raven, Will and Grace) and Michael Feldman (That's So Raven, Nicky, Ricky, Dicky and Dawn). The series also stars Issac Ryan Brown, Navia Robinson, Jason Maybaum, Sky Katz and Anneliese van der Pol.

"We are incredibly proud of our first season and the fact that Raven has returned home to Disney Channel in a very big way,” said Adam Bonnett, executive vice president of original programming for Disney Channels Worldwide in a statement. “The entire cast and crew have delivered a classic family sitcom that kids and families will be watching for many years to come.”

Syfy has renewed its fantasy series The Magicians for a third season, network officials said Wednesday.

The series, based on Lev Grossman’s bestselling novels The Magicians, is currently posting viewership increases in its sophomore season across all key demos compared to season one, according to the network.

The Magicians, which follows a group of 20-somethings tasked with saving the existence of magic, is executive produced by John McNamara, Sera Gamble, Chris Fisher and Groundswell Productions' Michael London and Janice Williams.

A&E has extended the season of its unscripted series Live PD to 21 episodes, the network said Wednesday.

The series, which follows live six police departments as they patrol their respective communities, is averaging 1.1 million viewers (Nielsen Live+7 ratings) since launching this past October, according to network officials. In addition, the network will offer two Saturday episodes on Feb. 4 and Feb. 11, said A&E.

“We’re proud to be the destination for a series that is not only at the cutting edge of technological achievements but is also bold in nature,” said Elaine Frontain Bryant, Executive Vice President & Head of Programming, A&E Network in a statement. “By presenting an unfiltered look at how our country is being policed and prompting the thought-provoking conversation that follows, we’ve tapped into the cultural zeitgeist in a way that no other show has before.”

For years, Hispanic television viewers have gotten to know telenovela actors primarily through the characters they've portrayed on TV.

Now, AMC Networks' WE tv is for the first time turning the cameras on the stars themselves — with an assist from Telemundo. My Life is a Telenovela, set in Miami and produced by Matador, will follow a group of "beautiful and fierce Latina actors working in this hyper-competitive world, which has captivated hundreds of millions of viewers."

WE tv has ordered eight hour-long episodes of the reality show, which is set to premiere later this year. As the series begins, several characters are vying for the same role on a Telemundo telenovela. WE tv hopes this will provide the fireworks necessary for compelling reality entertainment.

“WE tv is a network that was really built on diversity," WE tv president Marc Juris said. "It is bringing viewers personalities and programming that has historically been hard to find on the mainstream dial. This show continues that commitment to new faces and voices."

WE tv is a sibling of such networks as AMC, BBC America, IFC and SundanceTV and is available in more than 86 million U.S. homes. 

My Life Is a Novela is not the first star turn for telenovelas on U.S. English-language TV this year. NBC's Telenovela, which concluded its 11-episode run in February, featured superstars Jencarlos Canela and Eva Longoria in a fictional behind-the-scenes look at how a telenovela is produced.

Disney Jr. is betting that Fancy Nancy, the children's books sensation, will prove appealing as an animated TV series and telefilm.

The network has optioned the rights and plans to develop an original animated TV movie and series, while Disney's consumer products group will look to capitalize with attendant products. 

Created by Jane O'Connor and Robin Preiss Glasser, the Fancy Nancy stories are written for children ages 2 through 7, centering on a girl donned with an extensive vocabulary and elegant wardrobe. She's been the central character spanning 60 books that have been translated into 20 languages and  sold 28 million copies worldwide.

Fancy Nancy publisher HarperCollins and Disney Publishing will collaborate on books based on the television series.

"Children have been captivated by Fancy Nancy's wit and irrepressible spirit for a decade and we are very eager to give her an even bigger stage on which to perform" said Nancy Kanter, executive vice president, original programming and general manager, Disney Jr. Worldwide.

Looking to broaden its programming purview, INSP is launching an original productions division.

The announcement from INSP chairman and CEO means the network is looking to enter the telefilm realm, as well as in original series production.

“This is the next logical step in the progression of INSP,” said Cerullo.  “Since transforming the network focus to family-friendly, positive entertainment in 2010, we’ve taken a series of intentional steps to build a solid foundation that will resonate with viewers.  We have accomplished this in large part by focusing on acquired movies and series. As a result, INSP has become one of the fastest-growing networks today, in terms of both distribution and viewership. Creating original content has always been part of our long-term strategy. The formation of this new division is an important step in the process.”

Last year, INSP hired Craig Miller, the former RIVR Media and Scripps Productions who has been involved with the launch of some 50 series,  as vice president of original non-scripted programming. The company expects to announce a head of the original movies division shortly.

“With the establishment of an original film division, coupled with the original programming division created last year under Craig’s direction, INSP is positioned as the premier destination for values-based entertainment,” said Cerullo. "We are committed to recruiting top caliber staff to ensure our original product is being developed by some of the best creative minds in the industry. 2015 will be a historical year as we move forward with a growing library of original content and a clear strategy to accelerate series development.  We see unprecedented potential for continued ratings and audience growth.  This is all part of a master plan strategically implemented over the last several years. We know where we’re going, and we are moving forward at an uninterrupted pace.”

FX has ordered a second season of its drama series Tyrant, the network said Thursday.

The network has commissioned 13 episodes of the series, from executive producer Howard Gordon. The series averaged 5.1 million viewers (live +7) during its 10-episode freshman series run, said FX.

Production of Tyrant is scheduled to begin next spring with the second season returning in the summer of 2015.

“We’re so proud of Tyrant’s performance throughout its first season,” said Nick Grad, president, original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions in a statement.  “Howard Gordon is one of the best and most successful producers in this business.  His ability to combine intelligent, edge-of-your-seat storytelling with events from the current geopolitical climate is truly groundbreaking.  We look forward to seeing how Tyrant grows in season two.”
