Notably, according to Nielsen, about 25% of Netflix users streaming Seinfeld were born after the so-called “Show About Nothing” ended its groundbreaking nine-season “Must See” NBC run in May 1998.

Seinfeld was only the second most watched off-network show in subscription streaming for the week, with Netflix’s enduring kids series Cocomelon once again leading Nielsen’s sub ranking of “acquired series."

Taking the No. 9 spot was Apple TV Plus signature series, Ted Lasso, with 507 million viewing minutes for the week ending Oct. 10. Ted Lasso, which won seven Emmys in September, including Outstanding Comedy Series, dropped its second-season finale on Apple TV Plus on Oct. 8.
Netflix has set an Oct. 1 date for the debut of Seinfeld.

The top subscription streaming service inked an undisclosed but undoubtedly lucrative five-year deal with Sony Pictures TV for exclusive streaming rights to 180 episodes of the classic 1990s-era sitcom, which has been a huge performer in broadcast syndication, off-net cable and video streaming for the last two decades.

The show departed Hulu back in June.

Seinfeld will unfurl on Netflix in 4K resolution.

“This is the first time we’ve taken a risk of this nature, going all in on 9 seasons at the jump,” Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said in a statement. “But Jerry [Seinfeld] has created something special with this sitcom that nobody has ever done. I truly think he and [creator Larry David] have enormous futures ahead of them, and I’m thrilled Netflix could be the home for them to grow their fan bases.”

“Larry [David] and I are enormously grateful to Netflix for taking this chance on us. It takes a lot of guts to trust two schmucks who literally had zero experience in television when we made this thing,” quipped series co-creator and star Jerry Seinfeld, in a statement. “We really got carried away, I guess. I didn’t realize we made so many of them. Hope to recoup god knows how many millions it must have taken to do. But worth all the work if people like it. Crazy project.”

Seinfeld ran for nine seasons on NBC, starting in the summer of 1989 as a lightly regarded, almost experimental comedy, starring its titular up-and-coming New York-based standup, and masterminded by show-runner David, previously best known for struggling to break through on Saturday Night Live.

It departed what became NBC's vaunted "Must See" Thursday night schedule nine seasons later, in May 1998, watched by 76 million viewers and having transformed the art of TV comedy writing.

While Sony and Netflix never disclosed deal terms, the Los Angeles Times reported earlier that the Seinfeld deal surpassed NBCUniversal's $500 million pocket-to-pocket transaction to move The Office off Netflix at the beginning of this year and put it onto Peacock.

To mark the debut of Seinfeld on its platform, Netflix has compiled this teaser:

After watching two of its biggest performers, off-network comedies The Office and Friends, walk out the door and onto other subscription streaming platforms recently, Netflix is about to welcome a proven breadwinner.

Sony Pictures TV’s Seinfeld will end its exclusive domestic SVOD run on Hulu June 23 and will migrate to Netflix, where it will be available in 4K and reside under the same roof as star Jerry Seinfeld’s standup specials, ostensibly on an immediate timeline (although the top subscription streaming service hasn’t yet announced a premiere date.)

The move is tied to a deal Netflix signed with Sony in 2021 to acquire global rights to all 180 episodes of Seinfeld, which has become the most profitable show in television history. Neither Netflix or Sony have released deal terms, but the Los Angeles Times pegged the value of the agreement as surpassing the $500 million pocket-to-pocket transaction executed by NBCUniversal to take The Office back from Netflix and put it on Peacock at the beginning of this year.

Programming performance metrics in video streaming are, of course, tough to come by. But based on the nascent measurement program initiated by Nielsen in September of last year—one tracked weekly and closely by Next TV—it was clear that The Office was consistently Netflix’s top performing show before it left the platform at 11:59 p.m. on December 31 of last year.

Likewise, Warner Bros. TV’s Friends departed Netflix precisely a year earlier as the platform’s most popular show of 2019, following WarnerMedia’s own $425 million pocket-to-pocket deal to put the classic NBC Must-See Thursday Night sitcom on HBO Max.

As the media conglomerates, still slack-jawed that they allowed Netflix to exceed their own market capitalization on Wall Street by providing it with their family jewels, continue to close ranks, other venerable off-net comedies have been pulled back to their mother ships, as well—such as Warner Bros.’ Chuck Lorre series The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men, which are also on HBO Max as part of a pocket-to-pocket deal reportedly worth $1.5 billion.

So that leaves the so-called “Show About Nothing,” which debuted 32 years ago and elevated creator Larry David and star Seinfeld to the exalted level of comedy icon/geniuses, described by one critic recently as the TV sitcom equivalent to John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Netflix remains streaming’s most powerful platform for off-network shows—comedies like the Emmy-winning Schitt’s Creek and New Girl routinely routinely draw 400 million or more streaming minutes in a given week, according to Nielsen. And procedural dramas like NCIS and medical melodrama Grey’s Anatomy are often the most popular shows among the major U.S. SVODs on weeks in which no big original series breaks through.

And certainly, in the aftermarkets, Seinfeld has been unrivaled, entering into an unprecedented fifth contract cycle of broadcast syndication in 2015, the year in which the Financial Times calculated its total revenue haul to have reached $3.1 billion. According to Broadcasting & Cable data, Seinfeld generated $2.3 billion in its first three syndication cycles alone. Cable channel deals to outlets like TBS have generated another $379 million.

Then came video streaming—with Hulu paying a now-seemingly-very-affordable $160 million in 2015 for six years of exclusive U.S. subscription streaming rights to Seinfeld.

The question now is, more than 21 years after Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer signed off in the show’s baffling May 1998 finale, how many more laughs can classic gags like "The Soup Nazi," "Schmoopie" and "The Close Talker" generate? Will new generations, raised in a world in which Seinfeld's pioneering brand of comedic storytelling has been widely assimilated, be interested in the original recipe?

There's probably no better platform than Netflix to find this out.

“Seinfeld is the television comedy that all television comedy is measured against,” Neflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said in 2019, at the time of the acquisition. “It is as fresh and funny as ever and will be available to the world in 4K for the first time.”

The rapid takeover of the television business by video streaming companies appears ready to claim one of the most venerable models of traditional linear TV, the half-hour network sitcom.

In a broad-skewing report outlining the trend, veteran Deadline Hollywood TV writer Nellie Andrea says that independent studios (i.e. those not vertically integrated with a Big Four broadcast network) are looking to exit the business because of what are now unfavorable economics.

Most notable case in point: Sony Pictures TV, producer of venerable sitcom hits including Seinfeld, Married…With Children and The Goldbergs, has “informally” advised its network TV partners that it will no longer be making half-hour comedies using the traditional business model. (Note: This isn't something Sony has formally announced.)

Deadline also reported that Lionsgate TV is in talks with Disney/ABC to develop a new business model for the sitcom, which has fallen into disrepair as streaming not only siphons away the first-run broadcast TV audience, but also off-network syndication.

The traditional sitcom model calls for production studios to absorb most of the risk for a hoped-for aftermarket goldmine should a popular show exceed about four seasons and 100 episodes.

With only three new sitcoms introduced in the fall of 2019 renewed for a second season, and beleaguered broadcast and cable networks no longer spending hundreds of millions of dollars on repeats, deficit financing comedies isn't a viable model, producers are finding.

“Downstream economics have changed drastically,” one industry insider told Deadline.

As for Sony Pictures TV, its Seinfeld—the most profitable sitcom in history—helps illustrate the point.

Sony began selling Seinfeld into off-network syndication in 1995, just over five years after the series began its landmark nine-season network run on NBC. Seinfeld generated a reported $4.7 billion for Sony through 2017, exploiting not only numerous cycles of off-network syndication deals with broadcast station groups, but also licensing agreements with cable networks like TBS, which agreed in 1998 to pay $1 million an episode for the basic cable repeat rights to the show.

For Sony, the Seinfeld gravy train has never stopped.

Last year, ViacomCBS took over linear off-network rights to Seinfeld after Netflix paid $500 million to steal the streaming rights away from Hulu.

That Seinfeld has been able to sustain its asset value speaks not only to the enduring quality of the show, but also to its scarcity—few TV programs are able to rise to that level of zeitgeist stature anymore, much less survive long enough to put 180 episodes in the can.

Indeed, Seinfeld ran in in the last era of broadcast TV primacy, one which not only preceded the explosion of viewing choices wrought by streaming, but the rise of basic cable in the late-'90s and aughts.

For her part, Deadline’s Andreeva notes that only a few shows over the last 10 years—Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory—have reached anywhere near this kind of after-market gravitas.

Meanwhile, further challenging the sitcom model, comedies don’t have near the international value that dramas do. Networks used to start underwriting the cost of successful shows right around season four, but that's happening less and less. And networks demand “stacking rights” in their first-run model, making it difficult to double dip into streaming with concurrent SVOD rights deals.

As Andreeva also notes, perhaps more than anything, streaming companies like Netflix are offering much better deals for independent distributors, paying licensing fees beginning in year one that often cover all of the production costs. Producers aren't in line for vast profitability in success. But don't go broke waiting to find gold, either.
