MGM Plus will bring back its sci-fi/horror series From for a third season, the network announced. 

The series will continue to follow the mystery of a nightmarish town that traps all those who enter, according to the premium service. The 10-episode third season is expected to return in 2024. 

“The first two seasons of From captivated critics and terrified and engaged fans, who have formed a thriving online community that is trying to put the pieces together week by week as the secrets of the nightmarish town – and possibly beyond – are slowly revealed,” MGM Plus Head Michael Wrights said in a statement. "We can’t wait for fans to see the surprises ahead in season three, which promises more scares and mysteries but also more answers.”

From stars Harold Perrineau as well as Catalina Sandino Moreno, Eion Bailey, Hannah Cheramy, Simon Webster, Ricky He and Chloe Van Landschoot.

Two science fiction-themed original series highlight the list of show premieres launching this week on cable networks and streamers. 

MGM Plus’s sophomore series From debuts April 23 and continues to follow the lives of residents trapped in a small town who are forced to survive monstrous threats from the surrounding forest, according to network officials. The series stars Harold Perrineau, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Eion Bailey, and Elizabeth Saunders.

Peacock on April 20 debuts Mrs. Davis, a drama series starring Betty Gilpin as a nun who relies on her faith to battle an artificial intelligence threat, according to the streamer. The eight-episode series also stars Jack McDorman and Margo Martindale.

FX brings author Octavia E. Butler’s sci-fi novel Kindred to the small screen in an eight-part series premiering on Hulu December 13.

The series, executive produced by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, revolves around a young, black writer who settles down in Los Angeles and eventually time travels between the present and a pre-Civil War period where she encounters slavery while meeting her ancestors.

Hulu will debut all eight episodes of the series, which stars Mallori Johnson, Micah Stock, Gayle Rankin and Ryan Kwanten.

Jacobs-Jenkins, a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist who has worked on such television shows as HBO’s Watchmen and Prime Video’s Outer Range, said adopting Butler’s groundbreaking 1979 novel was something he had worked toward for years.

“This was one of the first and only books where I closed it and thought to myself this is about me, my family and my history,” he said. “It’s about coming of age as an American and having to reckon with the legacies of the history that makes up this country’s narrative.”

Kindred debuts during an unprecedented time for content produced by people of color to be seen and experienced on television, according to Jacobs-Jenkins.

“There’s more work for creators of color than at any point in history,” he said. “There are just so many options as viewers, and I feel very lucky to be operating in this moment. I don’t have to feel the pressure about being the only Black content creator interested in this and other material. It’s an embarrassment of riches.”

At the same time, he hopes that Kindred can contribute to the authentic and accurate discussion and media portrayal of slavery in America.

“Nothing has done more damage to the way we think and talk about slavery in this country than TV and film,” he said. “I’m trying really hard to see if we can repair that – how do we refresh our thoughts about the people who lived during this period, the choices that were made and what it takes to survive? Ultimately those lessons are the lessons for how we survive now.” ■ 

FX will develop a new science fiction series for Hulu dubbed Never Let Me Go, starring Tracey Ullman.

The series, inspired by a Kazuo Ishuguro novel, follows a rebellious teenage clone who escapes from a boarding school, setting in motion events that will spark a revolution and test the boundaries of what it means to be human, according to the network.

Along with Ullman, Never Let Me Go stars Viola Prettejohn, Kelly Macdonald, Aiysha Hart, Spike Fearn, Shaniqua Okwok, Gary Beadle, Kwami Odoom, Susan Brown, Keira Chanse and Edward Holcroft.

Melissa Iqbal will serve as executive producer along with Marc Munden, Alex Garland, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, Maria Fleischer and Ishiguro.

The series will be produced by DNA Productions, Searchlight TV and FX Productions.

Epix will bring back its sci-fi horror series From for a second season, the network announced April 24.

The series, which follows mysterious events inside a town that traps all those who enter, will begin production of its 10-episode second season this summer, with an expected return to the network in 2023, Epix said. 

The first season of From debuted Feb. 20 as the premium channel’s most viewed original series premiere ever, and finished as the second most-watched original series behind Godfather of Harlem.

“The first season of From mystified, enthralled, and terrified fans and critics alike with its haunting world, vivid characters and thrilling scares,” said Epix president Michael Wright in a statement. “We have been delighted by the social conversation generated by the From community and can’t wait to unravel more of this mysterious story with our passionate fans in season two.”

Apple TV Plus has renewed its sci-fi drama Invasion for a second season, days ahead of its first season finale.

The streaming service’s character-driven series, which follows an alien invasion through different perspectives around the world, ends its 10-episode first season on Dec. 10. Invasion stars Golshifteh Farahani, Shamier Anderson, Shioli Kutsuna, Firas Nassar, Billy Barratt, Azhy Robertson, Tara Moayedi, Daisuke Tsuji and Sam Neill.

“I’m profoundly grateful to Apple for being so supportive every step of the way, and trusting us to make a deeply human, emotional alien invasion story. And most of all I’m thankful to our amazing fans, without whom we wouldn’t have this opportunity to continue the invasion. I’m super excited about what we’re planning for season two, expanding our universe in the most intimate and epic ways,” said series co-creator and executive producer Simon Kinberg.

HBO Max Tuesday released a first-look teaser video at its new original sci fi series, Station Eleven, debuting Dec. 16.

The post-apocalyptic series, based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Emily St. John Mandel, tells the stories of survivors of a devastating flu as they attempt to rebuild and reimagine the world anew while holding on to the best of what's been lost.

Station Eleven stars Mackenzie Davis, Himesh Patel, Daniel Zovatto, David Wilmot, Matilda Lawler, Philippine Velge, Nabhaan Rizwan and Lori Petty, said the streaming service.

The series is produced by Paramount Television Studios and executive produced by Patrick Somerville, Scott Steindorff, Scott Delman, Dylan Russell, Jessica Rhoades, Hiro Murai, Jeremy Podeswa and Nate Matteson.

Freeform has renewed its sci-fi series Motherland: Fort Salem for a third and final season a day before its season two finale, the network said Monday.

The series, which is set in an alternate, present-day America where witches ended their persecution over 300 years ago by cutting a deal with the U.S. government to fight for their country with supernatural tactics and weapons, stars Taylor Hickson, Jessica Sutton, Ashley Niciole Willams and Amalia Hol.

Motherland: Fort Salem is executive produced by Eliot Laurence, Will Ferrell, Adam McKay Kevin Messick and Amanda Tapping.

Apple TV Plus Thursday dropped a video trailer for its sci-fi-themed original series Foundation, which debuts on the streaming service Sept. 24.

The series, based on the Isaac Asimov book series of the same name, chronicles a band of exiles on their monumental journey to save humanity and rebuild civilization amid the fall of the Galactic Empire, said the streaming service.

Foundation is produced by Skydance Television, with David Goyer, Robyn Asimov, Josh Friedman, Cameron Welsh, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross serving as executive producers.

Netflix’s popular sci-fi series Stranger Things will return four its fourth season in 2022, marking nearly three years since its last season ended, the streaming service announced in a recent tweet. 

Netflix released a tweet Aug 6 alerting viewers that “in 2022 The Global Phenomenon Returns” amid scenes from both previous seasons and early clips from season four. Netflix did not provide a specific premiere date. 

The third season of  Stranger Things debuted on July 4, 2019. The series stars Millie Bobby Brown, David Harbour, Winona Ryder, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Finn Wolfhard and Noah Schnapp.

BBC America will kick off the New Year with the return of its action-adventure series, Doctor Who.

Jodie Whittaker returns as Doctor Who, resuming her time-and-space travels with friends Ryan (Tosin Cole), Yasmin (Mandip Gill) and Graham (Bradley Walsh), according to the network. 

Epix will unveil its version of HG Wells classic story War of The Worlds on Feb. 16, the network said Thursday.

The eight part series is a contemporary re-telling of the classic sci-fi tale in which an alien force comes to earth and wipes out all of mankind with the exception of a few pockets of humanity, said network officials.

War of the Worlds features an ensemble cast including Gabriel Byrne, Elizabeth McGovern, Léa Drucker, Natasha Little, Daisy Edgar Jones, Stéphane Caillard, Adel Bencherif and Guillaume Gouix.

The drama series is produced by Urban Myth Films, in partnership with CANAL+, Fox Networks Group (FNG) Europe & Africa and AGC Television, and executive produced by Howard Overman, Julian Murphy and Johnny Capps for Urban Myth Films.

“We at Epix are thrilled to be working with the teams at Urban Myth and Studiocanal to showcase Howard Overman’s masterful take on this classic story,” said network president Michael Wright in a statement. “We can’t wait to bring this cinematic and addictive series to our audience.”

Netflix Friday rolled out a new trailer for the third season if its  sci fi series Stranger Things, which returns for its third season on July 4. 

The new season of the series continues to follow the exploits of five friends on the cusp of adulthood trying to figure out how to grow up without growing apart who eventually come together to fight evil enemies both old and new, according to Netflix.

Netflix Tuesday announced the July return of its Emmy-nominated drama series, Stranger Things.

The sci-fi/fantasy series will debut its third season on July 4. according to the streaming service. Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Winona Ryder and David Harbour star in the series, which initially debuted on Netflix in 2016.

Netflix will debut its reboot of the 1960’s sci-fi series Lost In Space on April 13, the streaming service said Wednesday. 

The reimagining of the original series – which aired on CBS from 1965-68 – is set 30 years into the future, with the Robinson family forced to survive in a dangerous alien environment after their ship veers off course from its original destination.

Netflix has already made the series available for viewing in space, with the streaming service providing NASA with access to the pilot episode for astronauts at the International Space Station to view, said company officials. 

Lost In Space stars Molly Parker, Toby Stephens, Max Jenkins, Parker Posey and Ignacio Serricchio.

Add “Dust” to a growing group of multiscreen services that is focused on short-form sci-fi fare from both emerging and established filmmakers.

Dust, a service from Gunpowder & Sky, is launching today across YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and the web.

The offering, billed as a “destination for binge watchable sci-fi featuring short films, series and behind-the-scenes content,” is launching with an exclusive debut of a thriller called Where The Shadows Fall that’s directed by Kate Phillips and written by Will Welles.  DUST has also begun production of Product Wars, its first original.

Dust, which has tapped the help of producer Steve Tzirlin (late of Lucasfilm and Fox Filmed Entertainment), said it is starting off with a curated selection of more than 100 sci-fi films. It’s also producing factual programming around sci-fi and technology topics.

Dust is just the latest multiplatform OTT focused on the genre. Last month, a service called Recursor launched with a focus on short-form, “hard” science fiction fare developed by independent filmmakers and content creators.

“Sci-fi shorts, as well as the overall sci-fi culture, is reminiscent of the renaissance in music videos at the dawn of MTV in the 80s,” Van Toffler, CEO of Gunpowder & Sky, said in a statement. “Dust is yet another great avenue for Gunpowder & Sky to partner with emerging as well as established filmmakers paving the way in the sci-fi genre.”

WGN America will add to its original scripted series lineup with the deveopment of two new shows, the network announced Monday.

The network has greenlit to pilot Roadside Picnic, a sci-fi series based on the novel by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky in which aliens have come and gone on earth, leaving humans to explore the mysteries left behind in the remains of the alien culture, said network officials. Jack Paglen (Transcendence, Alien: Covenant), Alan Taylor (Mad Men), Vivian Cannon (Preacher) and Neal Moritz (The Fast and the Furious) will serve as executive producers on the project.

Scalped, based on the DC Comics grahic novel series written by Jason Aaron, takes palce in the world of a Native American Indian reservaion led by an ambitious Chief who has to deal with a renegade who has returned home after years away from the reservation. Doug Jung (Banshee) and Geoff Johns (The Flash) will serve as executive producers on the project, said network officials. 

AMC will debut its summer sci-fi series Humans on June 28, the network announced Thursday.

The series, based on Sweedish sci-fi drama Real Humans, follows the relationship between humans and synths, highly developed robots that are a must-have gadget for families, said network officials.

The series is produced by Britian’s Channel 4 and Kudos (Broadchurch).

“Humans is a series that is both incredibly entertaining and engaging on a character level, and a very timely exploration of the kind of impact the A.I. technology being developed today might have on our everyday lives,” said Joel Stillerman, AMC’s executive vice president of programming, production and digital content in a statement.  “You don't have to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy this story. As the title implies, it's very much about the human side of the topic.”

Having found massive success with Game of Thrones, the HBO fantasy epic that premieres its fifth season on April 12, writer George R.R. Martin is looking to expand his TV fortunes.

The Game of Thrones author, who has an overall deal with HBO, is on board as a producer for a science fiction period drama with the pay cabler, a move first reported by Entertainment Weekly.

The series is tentatively called Captain Cosmos and centers on a young science fiction writer in 1949, at the dawn of the TV age. Z Nation coexecutive producer Michael Cassutt is writing the series, which is in the early stages of development.

Syfy will develop an original, space-themed series Dark Matter for debut in 2015, the network announced Wednesday.

The 13-episode series, based on a graphic novel Dark Matter by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie (Stargate), follows the crew of a derelict spaceship that is awakened from stasis with no memories of who they are or how they got on board, but have to work together to survive.

Dark Matter will be produced by Prodigy Pictures and will air on Syfy in 2015.

“Dark Matter is a refreshing and entertaining space opera that blends an intriguing premise with fast-paced suspense, said Chris Regina, senior vice president of programming for Syfy. “It will be a terrific addition to our prime time schedule next year.”
