Netflix continued its awards season success Sunday, dominating SAG Awards wins in both the television and motion picture categories during a televised primetime ceremony.

The streaming service won four SAG Awards in the television category to lead all distributors, doubling the take of second place Pop TV's two award wins.

Netflix was once again led by The Crown, which repeated as the top choice in the outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series category. The Crown star Gillian Anderson also won a SAG Award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series.

Pop TV’s Schitt’s Creek won two awards in the comedy category, including outstanding ensemble as well as best actress in a comedy series for Catherine O’Hara.

On the movie front, Netflix won three awards, including two for original movie Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom stars Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boesman, who took home SAG Awards for outstanding lead female and male actor in a motion picture, respectively.

Netflix was the big winner at the 78th Golden Globe Awards, bagging top drama with The Crown and best limited series with The Queen’s Gambit, and with those series’ stars racking up prizes too. Schitt’s Creek, which premiered on Pop TV but built a mass audience on Netflix, got top comedy. 

Tina Fey hosted the primetime event from the Rainbow Room in New York and Amy Poehler from the Beverly Hilton, where a collection of vaccinated first responders were in attendance. 

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association awards the Golden Globes, and the consortium took some heat in the weeks leading up to the Feb. 28 affair. That there are but 90 members that vote for the Golden Globes has long made for oddball picks now and then, but the Los Angeles Times also reported that none of the voters are Black. 

Midway through the three-hour production, HFPA brass addressed the criticism. “Just like in film and television, Black representation is vital,” said VP Helen Hoehne. “We must have Black journalists in our organization.”

Black artists were nonetheless well-represented among the winners. The first prize, for supporting actor in a drama film, went to Daniel Kaluuya for his work in HBO Max’s Judas and the Black Messiah, about the battle between the chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, Fred Hampton, and the FBI. Kaluuya played Hampton. 

Kaluuya’s remote response initially had connectivity issues, setting an ominous tone for the virtual awards. Eventually his words came through. “We’re here to give until we’re empty, and I gave everything,” Kaluuya said. 

John Boyega got the next award, for best supporting actor in a series. He was in the Steve McQueen-directed Small Axe on Amazon. Later on, Chadwick Boseman got best actor in a motion picture drama for his work in Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Boseman died in August, and his widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, spoke on his behalf. “He would say something beautiful,” said an emotional Ledward. “Something inspiring.”

Receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award, Jane Fonda cited Small Axe and Judas and the Black Messiah, among others, as projects that gave her empathy and opened her mind across this difficult past year. She pushed Hollywood to be more inclusive. “Let’s all of us make an effort to expand that tent so that everyone rises,” said Fonda. 

Norman Lear got the Carol Burnett Award for TV achievement. “He paved the way for all of us who follow,” said Tina Fey of the 98-year-old producer. 

“I’ve never lived alone,” Lear said. “I’ve never laughed alone.”

Catherine O’Hara got best actress in a comedy for her work in Schitt’s Creek and Jason Sudeikis got best actor in a comedy for Apple TV Plus’s Ted Lasso. 

Best actor in a limited series went to Mark Ruffalo of HBO’s I Know This Much Is True and best actress in a limited series went to Anya Taylor-Joy of Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit.

Best actress in a drama went to Emma Corrin of Netflix’s The Crown, Corrin beating out Olivia Colman from the same series. Corrin plays Princess Diana. Best actor in a drama stuck with The Crown, as Josh O’Connor got the prize. He plays Prince Charles. 

The show was again saluted when Gillian Anderson got best supporting actress for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher. 

Best TV drama went to, yes, The Crown, beating out HBO’s Lovecraft Country, Disney Plus’s The Mandalorian and Netflix’s Ozark and Ratched. 

Upon getting best TV comedy for Schitt’s Creek, Eugene Levy called the award “a lovely vote of confidence in the messages the show stands for,” such as inclusion. Schitt’s won against Netflix’s Emily in Paris, HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant, Hulu’s The Great and Apple TV Plus’s Ted Lasso.

Netflix did well in terms of the movie awards. Its The Trial of the Chicago 7 won best screenplay and Rosamund Pike won best actress in a comedy for I Care a Lot.

Best actor in a motion picture comedy went to Sacha Baron Cohen for Amazon’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. He joked that Donald Trump was contesting the result amidst reports of dead people voting. 

Borat then took best comedy movie. “This movie couldn’t have been possible without my co-star,” Cohen said. “I’m talking, of course, about Rudy Giuliani.”

Andra Day got best actress in a motion picture drama for her work in The United States vs. Billie Holliday.

Best motion picture drama was given to Nomadland (which, like Billie Holliday, is on Hulu). Director Chloé Zhao called the film “a pilgrimage through grief and healing.”

“We don’t say goodbye,” Zhao added. “We say, see you down the road.”

Netflix continued its successful 2021 awards season run, picking up the most Critics Choice Awards wins within the television category during Sunday night's virtual awards ceremony. 

Netflix took home eight Critics Choice Awards to lead all broadcast, cable and streaming services. Netflix was led by The Crown, which won four awards, including best drama series, best actor in a drama series (Josh O’Connor), best actress in a drama series categories (Emma Corrin) and best supporting actress in a drama series (Gillian Anderson). 

Netflix's performance follows its domination of the Golden Globes Awards ceremony last weekend.

Apple TV Plus’s Ted Lasso won three awards, including best comedy series, topping Pop TV’s Schitt’s Creek, which won two awards in its final season. Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit also won two awards, including best limited series. 

Overall, streaming services took home more than half of the awards in the TV categories. 

HBO took home two awards, one each for drama series Lovecraft Country and limited series The Undoing.

Netflix also won six awards in the film category, including three for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which included a best actor nod for the late Chadwick Boseman’s performance in the film. The Trial of The Chicago 7 won two awards including best acting ensemble. 

Amazon Studios won three awards, including a best supporting actress win for Maria Bakalova in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and a best editing statuette for Sound of Metal.

Netflix was a huge winner in the Golden Globe Awards' television category, grabbing more than half of the awards presented during Sunday night's ceremony.  

Led by its drama series The Crown -- which swept the Golden Globe awards in the TV drama category -- the streaming service garnered wins in six of the 11 television awards during the mostly virtual and often glitchy live event on NBC hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Pop TV was the only other cable, broadcast or streaming service to garner multiple awards with two for its comedy series Schitt’s Creek. 

Overall, streaming services won eight of the 11 awards in the television category, with Apple TV Plus and Amazon Prime each taking home a Golden Globes statuette. Netflix won 10 trophies overall.

Streaming companies were well represented in film categories, too--Amazon's Borat Subsequent Moviefilm took best motion picture comedy or musical prize, while the movie's star, Sacha Baron Cohen, won the comedy/musical actor trophy.

Along with winning best TV drama series, The Crown won for best television actor in a drama series (Josh O’Connor) and best television actress in a drama series (Emma Corrin). Series star Gillian Anderson also won for best television supporting actress. 

Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit won two Golden Globes, including best television limited series. 

Schitt’s Creek in its final year of eligibility won a Globes statuette for best comedy series, while series star Catherine O’Hara won for best television actress in a musical/comedy series. 

The streaming service also won hardware on the movie front. Netflix's Trial of the Chicago 7 won best movie screenplay, while the late Chadwick Boseman won for best actor in a motion picture for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Also, Rosamund Pike won the best actress in a motion picture comedy award for her role in Netflix's I Care A Lot.

Netflix's Mank, which led all motion pictures with six nominations, was shut out of the winner’s circle. 

Outside of Netflix, Hulu's The United States vs Billie Holiday won best actress in a motion picture for Andra Day’s lead role as the R&B singer, while Daniel Kaluuya, star of Judas and The Black Messiah -- which debuted on HBO Max -- won the Golden Globes award for best supporting actor in a motion picture.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took the virtual stage at the Golden Globes, hosting on a split screen from opposite coasts. The spartan gathering was an “audience made up of smokin'-hot first responders,” said Fey. “We are so grateful for the work that you do."

Poehler shared what the crowd usually looks like at the Globes: “Meryl Streep, like, hammered, can’t remember what movie she’s there for,” she said. “Quentin Tarantino, crawling under tables, touching people’s feet.”

Fey poked fun at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, for its “90 international, no-black journalists” and a German member who might just be a sausage with a face drawn on it.

Laura Dern awarded the best supporting actor in a motion picture. The prize went to Daniel Kaluuya for HBO Max’s Judas and the Black Messiah.

Kaluuya initially had connectivity issues, then came through. He thanked director Shaka King “for your vision.” He said, “We’re here to give until we’re empty, and I gave everything." 

Angela Bassett awarded best supporting actor in a TV series, with John Boyega of Amazon Prime’s Small Axe getting honored. Boyega apologized for wearing track bottoms, and thanked director Steve McQueen for his leadership. “I’m absolutely shocked,” he said.

Christian Slater named the best actress in a comedy, with Catherine O’Hara of Pop TV’s Schitt’s Creek winning. She singled out creators Eugene and Daniel Levy. “They created an inspiring, funny, beautify family love story,” she said. 

Tiffany Haddish awarded the best animated feature, with Soul winning.  “Little did we know that making a film about jazz, jazz would teach us so much about life,” said one producer.  

 Best actor in a limited series went to Mark Ruffalo of HBO’s I Know This Much Is True. “Thanks to my family who lets me go off and bring these crazy people home,” he said of his characters. 

He singled out showrunner Derek Cianfrance. “My brother, my partner, my director,” he said. 

“Let’s be courageous together,” Ruffalo urged viewers, imploring them to treat the earth, and each other, better. 

Cynthia Erivo was out next to award the best motion picture screenplay. Aaron Sorkin of Netflix’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 got the honor. “This is very nice but it can’t top the honor of being nominated alongside these four screenplays,” he said of Mank, Promising Young Woman, The Father and Nomadland. 

The HFPA acknowledged its shortcomings in terms of the association’s diversity. “Just like in film and television, Black representation is vital,” said VP Helen Hoehne. “We must have Black journalists in our organization.”

Norman Lear got the Carol Burnett award for TV achievement. “By changing television, he changed America,” went the narration of his intro. 

“He paved the way for all of us who follow,” said Tina Fey. 

“It knocks me out to be introduced by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey and to accept this award named for Carol Burnett,” Lear said, adding, “nobody made me laugh harder” than Burnett. 

Lear thanked “Sony Pictures Television, one of the greatest, most able groups of executives I’ve ever worked with.” 

On the cusp of 99 years old, Lear said, “I’ve never lived alone. I’ve never laughed alone.”

Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon came out to name the best actress in a TV drama. Emma Corrin of Netflix’s The Crown got the honor, ahead of Olivia Colman from The Crown, Jodie Comer from Killing Eve, Laura Linney from Ozark and Sarah Paulson from Ratched. 

“Thank you to my incredible cast and crew for being by my side,” she said, and praised Princess Diana for teaching her empathy. 

Tracy Morgan awarded best song from a movie to "IO SI" from Netflix’s The Life Ahead. He awarded best movie score to Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste for Disney Plus’s Soul. “I think this is the first piece of art I ever made in my life that I can show my kids,” said Reznor. 

Sterling K. Brown and Susan Kelechi Watson from This Is Us came out for best actor in a TV comedy. Jason Sudeikis from Apple TV Plus’s Ted Lasso was picked. “That’s nuts,” he said. 

Sudeikis mentioned reading Tolstoy’s short story The Three Questions to his son, which made him “kind of reject the premise” of best actor, saying everyone he acts with should share the honors. They may not make him the best, he added, but they make him better. 

Best comedy went to Schitt’s Creek, the big winner at the Emmys in September. Daniel Levy thanked the show’s “amazing” cast and crew for their work in taking the show to “places we never thought possible.”

He called the Globe honor “a lovely vote of confidence in the messages the show stands for,” such as inclusion. 

Ben Stiller showed off the Golden Globe trophy he baked, he said after learning to bake during COVID. After taking a satisfied bite, he gave the best actress in a motion picture comedy prize to Rosamund Pike for Netflix’s I Care a Lot. 

She thanked the HFPA for “recognizing the dark side of comedy” and Netflix for “giving us an audience.” 

Pike also thanked “America’s broken legal system for making it possible to make stories like this.”

Anthony Anderson gave out best actor in a TV drama. Josh O’Connor from The Crown beat out Jason Bateman of Ozark, Bob Odenkirk of Better Call Saul, Al Pacino of Hunters and Matthew Rhys of Perry Mason. Of the Crown cast, he said, “every day, working with you was a master class.” 

O’Connor singled out co-star Emma Corrin for being “extraordinarily talented, funny, and a brilliant player of rock-paper-scissors.”

Gal Gadot was out next for foreign language motion picture. Minari won. Director Lee Isaac Chung described the film as about “A family trying to learn a language all its own,” adding, “a language of love.” 

Kenan Thompson gave out best TV drama to The Crown, beating out Lovecraft Country, The Mandalorian, Ozark and Ratched. 

“I’m just sorry that I’m sitting here in my tragic little office,” said Crown showrunner Peter Morgan as he saluted his cast. 

Jane Fonda was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award. “I’m so moved to receive this honor,” she said. 

She cited the essentiality of storytelling in tough times. “For all our adversity, we are humans first,” she said. 

Fonda mentioned Minari, Small Axe, Judas and the Black Messiah and Rami, among other series and films, for giving her empathy and opening her mind. She pushed Hollywood to be more inclusive. “Let’s all of us make an effort to expand that tent so that everyone rises,” said Fonda. 

Jamie Lee Curtis came out to salute the best supporting actress in a movie. Jodie Foster got the honor for The Mauritanian. “I think you made a mistake,” she said. “I’m a little speechless. I just never expected to be here again.”

Foster mentioned author Mohamedou Ould Salahi, who wrote the book that predated the film, and thanked him for sharing his story.  

Christopher Meloni saluted the best TV actress in a supporting role. Gillian Anderson of The Crown won for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher. She called out showrunner Peter Morgan, “for imagining I could inhabit Mrs. T.”

Rosie Perez was out next to salute best actress in a limited series. Anya Taylor-Joy of Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit won. “Thank you for letting us make the show that we want to make,” she said of Netflix. 

“I would do this project again and again and again,” she added. “I learned so much.”

Best limited series went to The Queen’s Gambit. Showrunner Scott Frank mentioned the producers securing the film rights to the Walter Tevis novel “three years before Anya was born.”

Of Anya Taylor-Joy, he wondered how someone who is “such a joy to work with” can go by the name Joy.  

Renee Zellwegger was out next for the best film actor in a drama prize. Chadwick Boseman of Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom got the honors. Boseman died last year. His wife Taylor Simone Ledward spoke on his behalf. “He would thank God,” she said. “He would thank his parents. He would thank his ancestors for their guidance and their sacrifices.”

She added, “He would say something beautiful. Something inspiring.”

Best film director went to Chloé Zhao for Nomadland. 

“Thank you for making beautiful beautiful movies,” she said to her fellow nominees. She thanked her family “for keeping me sane all these years.”

Best comedy movie went to Amazon’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. Director and star Sacha Baron Cohen said, “This movie couldn’t have been possible without my costar. I’m talking, of course, about Rudy Giuliani.”

He added, “The revelation, the sensation, was Maria Bakalova.”

Cohen saluted cast, crew and producers for getting the film out before Election Day, “to show the danger of lies, hate, conspiracies,” he said, and the power of empathy. 

Awkwafina was out next to hand out the prize for actor in a comedy movie. Sacha Baron Cohen won for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. He said, “Donald Trump is contesting the result,” adding that the former president said dead people voted. 

Joaquin Phoenix came out to award best actress in a drama movie. Andra Day of The United States vs. Billie Holliday won. An emotional Day said she was “in the presence of giants” among her nominees. “You inspire me so much.”

Billie Holliday, she added, “just transformed me with this role and her presence and her spirit.”

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones gave out the Globe for best drama movie. Nomadland won. 

“I’m speechless,” said Chloé Zhao. 

She thanked star Frances McDormand “for trusting me to create the character with you.”

At its core, the film is “a pilgrimage through grief and healing,” she said. 

“We don’t say goodbye,” concluded Zhao. “We say, see you down the road.”

Coming off its record-setting Emmy haul of nine wins and a sweep of the comedy category, Schitt’s Creek is making its debut in broadcast syndication on Monday. The Canadian-produced show, which is sold in all-barter deals for two years, is cleared on Fox-owned stations in the country’s largest markets as well as on stations totaling 95% of the country, including on Sinclair, CBS and CW-Plus-owned stations.

“What begins as a fish-out-of-water story quickly develops into a nuanced love letter to family, delivered with warmth, humanity and perfect comedic timing,” said Debmar-Mercury Co-Presidents Ira Bernstein and Mort Marcus in a statement. Lionsgate-owned Debmar-Mercury sold the show into domestic broadcast syndication. “With a gifted cast and whip-smart writing, it’s easy to see why Schitt’s Creek appeals to Emmy voters, critics and viewers, and has built a loyal and passionate fan base.”

Over the next two weeks, Schitt’s Creek will begin airing on broadcast, cable and streaming platforms, which promises to grow its already substantial audience. On broadcast stations, the 80-episode series is airing as both a weekday strip and on weekends. Starting Friday, Oct. 2, Schitt’s Creek also has a run on ViacomCBS-owned Comedy Central, with the network stacking five episodes of the series on Friday nights from 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. ET. And the sixth and final season of Schitt’s Creek debuts on Netflix on Wednesday, Oct. 7, so Netflix subscribers will now be able to watch the series in its entirety on that platform.

With sitcoms such as Warner Bros.’ The Big Bang Theory and Disney’s Modern Family aging -- Big Bang premiered in syndication in 2011 and Modern Family in 2013 -- having a new sitcom like Schitt’s Creek promises to freshen up access and late-night line-ups. And all of the buzz surrounding the show after its history-making Emmy night doesn’t hurt. Last week, Debmar-Mercury sent stations an Emmy-focused spot around the show to lift its final week of marketing prior to premiere.

Schitt’s Creek got its start in the U.S. on ViacomCBS’ Pop TV in February 2015 where it slowly grew a following. That following exploded when the show became available on Netflix after season three. That’s also when Debmar-Mercury took it into domestic broadcast syndication to help raise money to keep the show in production.

“We found them enough money to do those extra seasons,” said Marcus, and those seasons made all the difference.

In the meantime, ITV, which owns global distribution rights to the show, had sold it to Netflix and that’s when it found a huge and dedicated audience, driving the show all the way to its Emmy sweep.

Schitt’s Creek stars Eugene Levy as Johnny Rose, a once wealthy video store magnate, with Catherine O’Hara starring as his spoiled and entitled wife, Moira. Their adult children, David (Daniel Levy) and Alexis (Annie Murphy), are equally entitled, thus the whole family is confused when they suddenly find themselves living in a rundown motel in a remote town they own, Schitt’s Creek.

Schitt’s Creek is produced by Not A Real Company Productions Inc., which was founded by the father-son team of Eugene and Daniel Levy and is now run by Eugene, Daniel and Fred Levy as well as Andrew Barnsley. The series is produced in association with CBC and Pop TV. It’s distributed in domestic broadcast syndication by Debmar-Mercury and internationally by ITV Studios Global Entertainment.

Canadian sitcom Schitt’s Creek, suddenly a global sensation and a newly minted Emmy record holder, is now also the prime example of what can happen when a well-crafted, albeit initially obscure series gains exposure on a digital platform.

On Sunday, Schitt’s Creek took primetime Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series, as well the top prizes for comedy writing and directing. It swept all four lead actor categories, with former SCTV castmates Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara winning “Actor” and “Actress” Emmys, and Daniel Levy and Annie Murphy taking the “Supporting Actor” and “Supporting Actress” statues. Before Sunday night, the series won “craft” Emmys for costumes and casting.

Say what you want about the declining relevance of the Emmy Awards, particularly in virtual format. This kind of sweeping, record-setting feat was never pulled off by M*A*S*H or Cheers or Friends or Seinfeld. (Read more about the show's night at the Emmys in this Mike Malone recap.)

Schitt’s Creek joined All in the Family, The Golden Girls and Will & Grace as only the fourth comedy series in which all the lead and supporting actors were recognized by Emmy. 

Based on Schitt's Creek and Schitt's Creek alone, Pop TV ranked third among all networks and platforms at the Primetime Emmys (behind only giants HBO and Netflix).

Where did this show come from?

Debuting in January 2015, Levy and his son Dan, the creative team behind Schitt’s Creek, envisioned some interest in this tale of a super-rich family who lose their fortune and are forced to move to a dumpy dead-end town they once purchased as a joke.

The Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) commissioned the series. Then, after pitching the comedy at Mipcom in Cannes prior to its launch, ViacomCBS-owned TVGN, soon to be rebranded as Pop TV, decided Schitt’s Creek would fit its goal of attracting the “modern grownup,” specifically those viewers in their 30s and 40s who came of age in the 1980s and 1990s.

Pop TV touted the immediate merits of Schitt’s Creek. There was no real historical programming model for comparison, after all. Launching on Pop TV in 2015, the sitcom experienced consistent double-digit ratings growth via the traditional Nielsen ratings. At the same time, the accolades started mounting, including Canada’s ACRTA and Canadian Screen Awards. It was the first Canadian comedy to be nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award. 

Word of mouth spread; from Mariah Carey to Elton John publicly espoused their praise; even former First Lady Michelle Obama touted the merits of the fictional Rose clan. And then came Netflix, which began streaming the series’ repeats in 2017 and turned the cult favorite into a mass appeal hit.

Upon accepting the Series Emmy Sunday night, Eugene Levy included a shoutout to Netflix, citing the streaming service “for the spark that seemed to, you know, start everything.”

As the seasons progressed, the series evolved beyond a fish out of water comedy, and as the characters in the ensemble developed, so did the relationship between David (Dan Levy) and Patrick (Noah Reid). At the beginning, Schitt’s Creek immediately attracted attention by featuring David as an openly pansexual character, where his sexuality is simply accepted by all in any given relationship. When Patrick enters the scene in the middle of season three, there is an attraction between the two and their first kiss by season end. By season four, David finds himself navigating his first long-term relationship. And, in the series finale, the two wed in an emotional ceremony.

In what could not be better timing, meanwhile, Schitt’s Creek will launch into national syndication across the country beginning Monday, Sept. 28. Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury owns the domestic broadcast syndication rights to the series, which produced 80 episodes (six seasons). And the final season of the comedy, which concluded on Pop TV in April, will be available for streaming on Netflix on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Schitt’s Creek can also be seen on the free CW Seed service and IMDb TV, while Comedy Central will air five consecutive episodes every Friday beginning Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. ET.

Netflix earned a record number of 2020 Emmy Awards nominations, but it was HBO who won the most hardware during a virtual Emmy Awards telecast Sunday night that saw Pop TV’s Schitt’s Creek sweep the comedy category in record fashion. 

HBO garnered 11 Emmy Awards during the Jimmy Kimmel-hosted event, including major wins in the best drama and best limited series category. The other big winner during the ceremony was Pop TV’s Schitt’s Creek, which set a record by winning all seven categories in the comedy genre. 

Netflix finished third for the evening with two awards. VH1, FX Networks and Apple TV Plus each won one award during the audience-less telecast.

HBO, which won 30 total Emmy Awards -- including 19 Creative Arts awards -- was paced overall by Watchmen, which took home four awards Sunday night and a total of 11 Emmy Awards, including best limited series or movie. Succession, a star of the primetime telecast, won seven Emmy Awards overall, tying it with Disney Plus’s The Mandalorian -- including outstanding drama series. 

The night included several surprise winners, including actress Zendaya, who at 24 years old became the youngest actress to win best lead actress in a drama series, for her role as troubled teenager Rue Bennett in HBO’s freshman series Euphoria. 

Also getting a surprise nod was Uzo Aduba, who won the outstanding supporting actress statuette for her role as Shirley Chisholm in FX’s Mrs. America. 

Not surprising was RuPaul’s Drag Race’s win in the Reality Competition Program category -- it's third consecutive win -- and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver’s fifth consecutive win in the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category. 

Actor/Director Tyler Perry was awarded the TV Academy’s Governor’s Award during the live ceremony, which aired on ABC.

Pop TV's Schitt's Creek swept the primetime Emmy Awards comedy category, winning best series, best actor and best actress awards. 

The series -- which ended its six-season run earlier this year -- won seven overall primetime Emmy Awards including best comedy series, beating out HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm and Insecure, Netflix's Dead to Me and The Kominsky Method, NBC's The Good Place, Prime Video's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and FX's What We Do in the Shadows. 

Catherine O’Hara won the first award of the evening, taking home the best actress in a comedy series, topping Christina Applegate (Dead to Me), Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Linda Cardellini (Dead to Me), Issa Rae (Insecure) and Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish)

Eugene Levy took best actor honors, topping Anthony Anderson (Black-ish), Don Cheadle (Black Monday), Ted Danson (The Good Place), Michael Douglas (The Kominsky Method), and Ramy Youssef (Ramy). It was his first acting Emmy.

Daniel Levy won best supporting actor in a comedy series, while Annie Murphy won best supporting actress in a comedy series. 

Schitt’s Creek, which was nominated for 15 Emmys this year, also won Emmys for best writing in a comedy series and best directing in a comedy series. Overall, the series garnered nine Emmy awards this year, including two Creative Arts Emmy awards.

Jimmy Kimmel kicked off the 72nd Emmys at an empty Staples Center, and acknowledged the elephant in the room, or at least the elephant watching from home. “Right now we need fun. My god, do we need fun,” he said of these COVID times. “This has been a miserable year.”

Kimmel spoke of the importance of television in the pandemic era, calling it “a friend who’s there for us 24 hours a day.”

Kimmel saluted Emmy winner Norman Lear, calling him a “miracle.”

“The only thing I’ll be producing when I’m 98 is phlegm,” said Kimmel.

Kimmel also praised Pop TV comedy Schitt’s Creek, and spoke about how network mandates said ABC has to put the show name on the screen whenever it’s mentioned, to avoid penalties for profanity. “Just in case you were wondering why network television is almost dead,” Kimmel quipped.

Jennifer Aniston gave out the outstanding lead actress in a comedy trophy. Catherine O’Hara of Schitt’s Creek won. 

“I will forever be grateful to Eugene and Daniel Levy,” she said, for giving her a character who gets to play “her ridiculous self.”

Netflix came in with 160 nominations, while HBO had 107. NBC had 47, ABC had 36, Fox had 33, Amazon had 30, Hulu had 26 and CBS had 23. 

Outstanding lead actor in a comedy went to Eugene Levy of Schitt’s Creek. “You see, I told you I was good,” he said. 

Levy thanked his wife and the cast, including O’Hara, who “evidently can make anyone she works with look good.” 

He saluted his children Daniel and Sarah, with Daniel taking “our show that we came up with and brilliantly guiding it to this little Emmy party tonight.”

Tracee Ellis Ross gave out the prize for outstanding writing for a comedy series. Daniel Levy of Schitt’s Creek got the honors. 

He thanked his father for “giving me the reins to this show...I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you.”

Levy thanked the writers for sharing their personal and often embarrassing stories, “so that the Rose family could be who they are.”

Next up was outstanding directing for a comedy series. Andrew Cividino and Daniel Levy of Schitt’s Creek got the win. Cividono saluted Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy, saying “their grace, their genius and their generosity bubbles through the entire set.”

Levy added that the show’s “incredible cast made it so, so easy to direct.”

Outstanding supporting actor in a comedy saw Daniel Levy once again claim the prize. “The internet’s about to turn on me,” he said. “I’m so sorry.”

He called Schitt’s Creek a “six-year master class” taught by “two brilliant comedic minds--my dad, Eugene Levy, and the magnificent Catherine O’Hara.”

Levy spoke about the show giving the cast the “safety and security to do what we wanted.”

Playing David Rose has been “the greatest experience of my life,” Levy added. 

Outstanding supporting actress in a comedy went to Annie Murphy of, yes, Schitt’s Creek. “The six years that I have spent working on this show have been the best six years of my life,” she said. 

Murphy said she’s “so proud to be part of a show that stands for love and kindness and inclusivity and acceptance.”

Jason Sudeikis honored the outstanding comedy series, which had HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm and Insecure, Dead to Me and The Kominsky Method on Netflix, The Good Place on NBC, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon, Pop TV’s Schitt’s Creek and What We Do in the Shadows on FX. 

Schitt’s Creek won. Daniel Levy said the show is about “the transformational effects of love and acceptance,” and how that’s something we desperately need today. He urged people to vote and apologized for getting political. 

Eugene Levy thanked Pop TV and Netflix, and his son Daniel, “who took our fish-out-of-water story and transformed it into a celebration of inclusivity, a castigation of homophobia and a declaration of the power of love.”

When Kimmel came back on, he noted how “The Canadians have won all the Emmys tonight,” and added how America still has the Stanley Cup.

Outstanding variety talk series was given out by David Letterman. Waiting for the “virtual applause to die down,” Letterman shared some jokes from hosting in 1986 that he said he found in the pocket of his tux. The Emmy went to HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. 

Oliver thanked producers Tim Carvell and Liz Stanton and said he was happy to be working these days. “We’ve all been very fortunate to be able to do our shows and not have to stop during the pandemic,” said Oliver. 

He thanked HBO and his wife and his staff. “I miss you so much and I honestly cannot wait until we’re in the same space together,” Oliver said of the Last Week Tonight staff.  

Outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie went to Regina King of HBO’s Watchmen. “This is so freakin’ weird,” she started. 

“It’s an honor to be in this category with you,” she said of her fellow nominees. “I truly love being a thespian.”

“Have a voting plan,” King added, urging viewers to “be a good human.” 

Lead actor in a limited series or movie was given to Mark Ruffalo of HBO’s I Know This Much Is True. Ruffalo thanked director Derek Cianfrance for “a great collaboration” and his fellow cast for bringing out the best in each other with their “career-defining performances.”

“I can’t be up here right now without you being there,” he added. 

Ruffalo credited the show’s crew for their “grit, determination, dignity and class.”
He said the show is about family. “We are stronger together when we love each other and respect each other’s dignity,” he said, urging viewers to “vote for love and compassion and kindness.”

Outstanding writing for a limited series or movie was given out by Randall Park. Damon Lindelof and Cord Jefferson won for their work on Watchmen. 

Jefferson singled out his therapist. “I am a different man than I was two years ago,” he said.

Jefferson also mentioned the African-American men and women who died in the Tulsa massacre of 1921. “I think we should never forget them,” he said. 

Outstanding directing for a limited series or movie was claimed by Maria Schrader of Netflix’s Unorthodox. “Being nominated for the Emmys already felt like a coronation,” she said. “I’m speechless.”

She credited Netflix and its execs for “accompanying it with so much knowledge and support.”

She described Unorthodox as “adventurous and powerful and at the same time a delicate story.”

Outstanding supporting actor in a limited series went to Yahya Abdul-Mateen II of Watchmen. He thanked HBO and Damon Lindelof “for your words, for your creativity.”

Watchmen is “a story about trauma, about the lasting scars of white domestic terrorism and police corruption,” he said, “and a guy who came down to Earth to reciprocate to a black woman all the love she deserved.”

“I’m so proud that i was able to walk into those shoes,” Abdul-Mateen added.

Outstanding supporting actress in a limited series or movie was given to Uzo Aduba of FX on Hulu’s Mrs. America. “I love you, ladies, you are all exceptional,” she said of her castmates. 

She offered a “tremendous thank you to FX,” to former Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, who she plays in the series, and “everyone who came together to tell this brilliant story.”

“Thank you beyond words,” Aduba added. 

Anthony Anderson gave out the Emmy for outstanding limited series. HBO’s Watchmen got the prize. Damon Lindelof thanked HBO and Warner Bros. “for their unblinking support.” 

He also thanked “every single person who invested nine hours of their life into Watchmen.”

Lindelof singled out the “victims and survivors in Tulsa in 1921.”

Kimmel noted Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s death, calling her a “tireless champion of equality and justice.” H.E.R. sang “Nothing Compares 2 U” as the tribute to Hollywood’s deceased rolled. 

Several times throughout the night, essential workers, not Hollywood stars, announced Emmy nominees. Those included a nurse, a UPS driver and a teacher. 

Next was outstanding competition program. RuPaul’s Drag Race on VH1 won. 

“We love making television,” said RuPaul. “It is an honor to make television. All the kids get to tell their stories on our show and it’s beautiful.”

Tyler Perry got the Governor’s Award from the Television Academy board. Chris Rock and Oprah Winfrey spoke on behalf of Perry. “It takes extraordinary grit and determination to navigate the rough terrain that often life can give you,” said Winfrey. “My friend Tyler Perry has done that against all odds.”

Rock spoke about Perry living in his car before he made it. “And of course Hollywood welcomed an independent black man with open arms,” said Rock. “Wait. I misread that.”

Winfrey called Perry a maverick and an innovator. 

Perry spoke about a quilt his grandmother gave him when he was a teen. He didn’t like it much and used it for odd jobs, such as drying off a wet dog. Years later, he saw a similar quilt in an antique shop. The shopkeeper explained how it was made of patches representing stages of the maker’s life. “I didn’t even recognize the value in my grandmother’s quilt,” said Perry. 

Perry said, “We all sew our own quilts with our thoughts, our behaviors, our experience and our memories.”

Speaking of his studio headquarters in Atlanta, Perry said, “We’re all coming together to add patches to a quilt as diverse as it can be.” 

Outstanding lead actor in a drama went to Jeremy Strong of HBO’s Succession. Strong, who plays Kendall, singled out the people who have “been there for me and believed in me when something like this felt basically impossible,” including family. 

He mentioned a Stephen Dunn poem about a book so good the reader finishes it for the rest of their life. “This job is that for me,” he said. 

Outstanding lead actress in a drama went to Zendaya of HBO’s Euphoria. “This is pretty crazy,” she said. 

Of the show’s cast and crew, Zendaya said, “I’m so lucky to go to work with you every day and so inspired by what you do.”

Amid these tough times, Zendaya said “there is hope in the young people.”

Kimmel quipped, “She’s younger than Baby Yoda.”

Outstanding writing for a drama went to Jesse Armstrong of Succession. 

“I love writing for this show so very much, and for this amazing cast and crew,” he said from London.

Outstanding directing for a drama went to Andrij Parekh of Succession. “The show’s been such a professional dream,” he said. 

Parekh dedicated his Emmy to “all the kids whose names, like mine, are difficult to pronounce.” 

Outstanding supporting actor in a drama was claimed by Billy Crudup of Apple TV+’s The Morning Show. He thanked “everybody at Apple for the wonderful opportunity.”

“I’m glad to have delivered something for you,” he said. 

Outstanding supporting actress in a drama went to Julia Garner of Netflix’s Ozark. 

“I’m shocked, to be honest,” she said. 

Garner made a point of showing “gratitude to all the women in this category. You are the reason why I’m acting in the first place.”

Finally, outstanding drama was given out by Sterling K. Brown. It was between Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, AMC’s Better Call Saul, Netflix’s The Crown, Stranger Things and Ozark, BBC America’s Killing Eve, Disney+’s The Mandalorian and HBO’s Succession. 

Succession got the honors. 

“This is such a very nice moment,” said Armstrong, who lamented not being able to share it with his cast and crew and fellow writers and producers. “This is a wonderful achievement for the whole group.”

Armstrong gave out a series of “un-thank you’s” to COVID, President Trump for his “crummy and uncoordinated response” to COVID, Boris Johnson for the same, “nationalist and quasi-nationalist governments” for getting in the way of combating the virus, and “the media moguls who keep them in power,” said Armstrong. 

 HBO, led by its drama series Watchmen, drew the most TCA Awards wins, the Television Critics Association announced Monday.

The TCA Awards, which are usually announced during a July live ceremony but this year was not held in person due to the COVID-19 pandemic, honored HBO with six awards, topping all other cable, broadcast and streaming networks. Pop TV was the only other network to earn multiple awards, drawing two awards for its comedy series Schitt’s Creek.

HBO’s Watchmen won four awards, including an Individual Achievement In Drama honor for series star Regina King as well as an Outstanding Movie, Miniseries, Or Special; Outstanding New Program, and the Program Of The Year award, said TCA. 

CBS’ iconic series Star Trek earned the organization’s Heritage Award, while longtime Jeopardy! Host Alex Trebek was honored with the Career Achievement award. 

“Entertainment and culture are intertwined and in this challenging year, never has that intersection been more crucial as both a mirror to examine tough reflections and a rabbit hole to escape the noise and scares outside our homes. The 2019-2020 television season was both a challenge and a balm,” said Sarah Rodman, TCA President and executive editor at Entertainment Weekly in a statement. “This year offered up many high-quality options appealing to a wide swath of audiences with eclectic subjects ranging from sports and superheroes, to side-splitting sitcoms, darkly fascinating dramas, insightful documentaries, kid-friendly series, and more. We are excited to see what the future of television has in store, and we look forward to celebrating in-person next year as we come together to honor this medium that means so much to all of us.”

Pop TV’s Schitt’s Creek and FX’s Pose were the big winners among television programs  during the 31st annual GLAAD Media Awards ceremony.

Schitt’s Creek took home the Outstanding Comedy Series trophy, while FX’s Pose was the top choice in the Outstanding Drama Series category during the July 30 virtual ceremony of the awards, which honor media for fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues.

“During this era of political and cultural division, LGBTQ images in media are crucial in accelerating acceptance for the LGBTQ community and countering the dangerous rise in anti-LGBTQ rhetoric,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis in a prepared statement. “This year’s award recipients, including Pose and Schitt’s Creek, continue to bring necessary mainstream visibility to diverse voices within the LGBTQ community, ultimately raising the bar for LGBTQ inclusion and representation in media.”

Cable network Logo on Aug. 3 will air a taped version of the GLAAD Media Awards.

Pop TV will will air a documentary around its original comedy Schitt's Creek which will premiere after the series' April 7 finale, the network said Thursday.

Best Wishes, Warmest Regards: A Schitt's Creek Farewell will debut immediately following the series finale and will feature never-before-seen footage from the series as well as interviews with cast, creators, journalists, and fans, said the network. 

“As we celebrate the end of Schitt's Creek, we couldn’t do it without creating a special TV moment to send this historic series out on top,“ said Brad Schwartz, President, Pop TV in a statement. “This must-watch behind the scenes doc is the perfect way to honor a series that has made an impact in so many people’s lives, with enduring characters and stories filled with heart, humor and honesty that will stand the test of time.”

Pop TV has released a teaser trailer for the final season of its Emmy-nominated comedy series Schitt's Creek.

The series, which stars Eugene Levy, Annie Murphy and Catherine O'Hara, will debut its sixth and final season on Jan. 7, according to Pop TV. 

The series received four 2019 Emmy Award nominations, including one for Best Comedy Series. 

When the Emmy awards nominations were announced, Pop TV comedy Schitt’s Creek had its named called four times. The nominations came in advance of the comedy’s sixth and final season, which happens in 2020.

Eugene and Daniel Levy created Schitt’s Creek.

Brad Schwartz, Pop TV president, said the gang was “over the moon, screaming-out-loud excited” when the nominations came down. He spoke with Multichannel News about the appeal of Schitt’s Creek, and which other original could break out. An edited transcript follows.

MCN: Were you surprised to get four nominations?
Brad Schwartz: I thought your question was going to be, were you surprised to get one? (Laughs.)

We certainly knew we were in the conversation. Everywhere they prognosticate these things, everyone had it in the “wouldn’t it be great if ” category. Beyond that, what we knew that I don’t think a lot of people see is the passion people have for the show, which is unlike anything on TV. When we did our Television Academy screening, there were 200 people who could not get in. When this cast did their tour, they sold out the Beacon Theatre at $150 a ticket in 48 hours. They’ve done a 30-city live tour and they sell out all their shows.

MCN: What about Schitt’s Creek appeals to people in such a way?
BS: The character development is as good, I think, as any show in history. These characters arrive in Schitt’s Creek a wealthy family who might not have really known what family is all about. Episode by episode, season by season, as they go through things and become closer, go through heartbreak and relationships and business ordeals, all those things impact who they become.

People who have gone on the ride have been able to see true growth and change in these characters.

And the show is just so joyous. We live in divisive times, in a polarized political climate. But there’s this show and this town that you can go to on a Wednesday night and just have it be happy and the way things should be.

MCN: How much of a role did Netflix play in bringing Schitt’s Creek to a wider audience?
BS: When we launched in season one, we did our best as a rebranded network, with the marketing funds we had, to tell people how fantastic this show was. In a peak TV era, when trying to get attention is hard, it’s even harder when it’s a network [people] haven’t heard of.

Being a network’s No. 1 show really benefits the show. If it were the eighth show on another network, it might not have gotten the love, support and passion the entire organization throws behind it.

Because we wanted to expose the show to as wide an audience as possible, we did a deal with Netflix. We knew we had something special and just wanted people to see it. Pop has more [U.S.] subscribers than Netflix. But the convenience of Netflix — for a show like this, Netflix really became more like a library. When people heard about the show and wanted to watch it, there were many places for them to go, be it Pop, video-on-demand, our app. There was also this platform that everybody is using called Netflix.

MCN: Why is One Day at a Time right for Pop?
BS: When we heard that One Day at a Time was going to be cancelled by Netflix, our instant reaction was, Oh my god, that is such a Pop show. It has much of the same emotional beats that made Schitt’s Creek such a hit. It can make you laugh, it can make you cry, it deals with important cultural themes, with family overcoming adversity, with acceptance and inclusion.

Although they are vastly different shows, they both felt like shows that work on Pop. We jumped at the opportunity to bring that show to Pop. We feel like that show has a lot of life left in it and it will be a huge hit.

MCN: What’s another Pop original with a chance to break out?
BS: Last year, we launched Flack with Anna Paquin. It’s a fabulous, fabulous show. [Pop ordered a season two.] We premiered Florida Girls [in July], a comedy from our former co-owners Lionsgate. That show has surprised the world. Everyone’s writing wonderful accolades about it. Much like the beginning of Schitt’s Creek, that could go on a nice season-after-season run, and just keep picking up audience.

Pop Network will end its successful comedy series Schitt’s Creek after its upcoming sixth season, the network said Thursday.

The series, with a cast led by Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Daniel Levy, Annie Murphy and Chris Elliott, was renewed for a 14-episode sixth season, which will air in 2020 on CBS-owned Pop and on CBC in Canada. 

Co-creators Daniel Levy and Eugene Levy announced the renewal and final season of the series, saying that they were “grateful” to finish the series on their own terms.

“We are so grateful to have been given the time and creative freedom to tell this story in its totality, concluding with a final chapter that we had envisioned from the very beginning. It’s not lost on us what a rare privilege it is in this industry to get to decide when your show should take its final bow," the two said in a statement. “We could never have dreamed that our fans would grow to love and care about these characters in the ways that you have.”

The series, produced by Not A Real Company Productions Inc., follows the riches to rags story of a failed video store magnet and his family who are forced to live a less glamorous life in a small town.

“Schitt’s Creek is that rare zeitgeist show that creates incredible fandom, catalyzes culture, and receives best-of-television critical praise for its intelligence, character development, laughter and heart,” said Brad Schwartz, President of Pop in a statement. “Schitt’s Creek has given all of us a joyous gift that, in my opinion, places the show among the very best.”

Schitt's Creek airs on Tuesday nights in Canada and Wednesday nights on Pop.

Debmar-Mercury has acquired the broadcast syndication rights to Pop TV’s Schitt’s Creek, which is created by and stars father and son Eugene and Daniel Levy. Season five of the series, which has been renewed by both Pop and Canada’s CBC, is currently in production.

The Lionsgate-owned company will shop the series to TV stations for a fall 2020 debut.

“It is not every day you can walk into a TV station with a comedy this good, with a cast this talented and be able to point to the kind of ratings growth, social buzz and critical acclaim that Schitt’s Creek has generated,” said Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein, co-presidents of Debmar-Mercury, in a statement. “We enter the off-network market as this renewed series is coming off of its highest-rated season in the U.S. and four consecutive seasons of audience growth.”

According to Debmar-Mercury, Schitt’s Creek out-delivered its season-one average by 116% in adults 18-49, 76% in adults 25-54 and 81% in total viewers through March 2018. That said, the show’s ratings on Pop TV are very low, with the series averaging a .08 among adults 18-49 and 275,000 viewers in season four, which concluded on April 11.

That can be an advantage when taking a show into syndication because the show hasn’t already been seen by many viewers, so it can serve almost as original programming for TV stations.

As studios back out of the business of producing first-run programs explicitly for TV stations, and the number of comedies coming off of broadcast networks continues to thin, stations need new ways to program themselves. That said, low-rated shows rarely turn into high-rated shows once they come to syndication.

Schitt’s Creek tells the story of a once-wealthy family who is forced to move to the small town they once bought as a joke. The show stars Eugene Levy, Daniel Levy, Catherine O’Hara and Chris Elliott, alongside breakout stars Annie Murphy and Emily Hampshire.

Commissioned by CBC, Schitt’s Creek is produced by Not A Real Company Productions Inc. and created by Eugene Levy and Daniel Levy. The executive producers are Eugene Levy, Daniel Levy, Andrew Barnsley, Fred Levy, David West Read and Ben Feigin.

Schitt’s Creek is produced in association with CBC and Pop TV, and distributed internationally by ITV Studios Global Entertainment.

Pop announced Tuesday that it has renewed comedy seriesSchitt’s Creekfor a fifth season.

The series, which stars Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara, will increase its episode order to 14 episodes in the fifth season from 13 episodes for the fourth season, according to network officials.

The announcement comes as the fourth season ofSchitt’s Creekis delivering its biggest season ever in terms of viewers and young adults in Nielsen L+7 ratings, scoring solid double-digit increases over season three, according to Pop. 

“It is rare to find a television series that continues to deliver fanfare, critical acclaim and audience growth season after season,” said Brad Schwartz, President of Pop in a statement. “This gem of a show and its amazing ensemble cast, including the brilliant Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara, bring Emmy-worthy performances to the screen that are both comedic and heart-warming. We couldn’t be more proud of how the show continues to find new viewers and creatively flourish into one of the finest series on television.”

Pop, a cable network joint venture of CBS and Lionsgate, has named Justin Rosenblatt executive vice president of Original Programming and Development. Rosenblatt, currently senior vice president, Alternative Programming at CW Network had previously held senior programming posts at MTV Networks. He will join Pop in September, reporting to president Brad Schwartz.

Rosenblatt succeeds Paul Adler, Pop’s current SVP, Original Programming and Development, who announced his decision to leave after 16-years tenure and the completion of the network’s rebrand. Adler will continue to serve as a consulting producer at Pop for select projects.

Pop, formerly TVGN, rebranded in 2015 and has expanded its scripted and unscripted programming lineup. With over 400 hours of original programming in 2016, Pop’s slate includes critically acclaimed comedy “Schitt’s Creek,” the scripted comedy series “Nightcap” produced by Lionsgate Television, and a cappella docu-series “Sing It On.”

“Justin is the perfect executive to build upon our network’s rapid growth with bold new original programming that breaks through the clutter and resonates with passionate fans and younger, socially-engaged viewers,” Schwartz said in a statement. “His experience from The CW and MTV Networks in both scripted and unscripted programming is exactly what we need for the next phase of our evolution. He will join Pop at an optimal time, taking over the reins from Paul, who has had a remarkable run at the network and has been a great leader and contributor to our successes.”

 In his role at The CW, Rosenblatt oversees all elements of development and current programming. Prior to The CW, he was senior director of series development and programming for MTV2, overseeing shows like “Celebrity Death Match,” “Wildboyz,” and “Final Fu.”

“Pop has done an extraordinary job rebranding itself and is well-positioned as one of the fastest growing networks, supported by two industry leading parent companies, CBS and Lionsgate,” Rosenblatt said in a statement. “I’m fired up to be part of Pop’s evolution and creating the next generation of brand-defining content for the network.”

Looking to build on its original programming offering, Pop will add a new scripted series and reality series as it expands its original programming to more than 400 hours, the network said as part of the upfront presentation it will be making to clients.

The network that rebranded from TV Guide Network a year ago will launch a new scripted series Nightcap, this summer, going behind-the-scenes of a fictitious late-night talk show, according to the network. The series will join the network’s sophomore comedy series Schitt’s Creek, which launched its second season earlier this year, according to network officials.

On the unscripted front, the network in 2017 will launch Hollywood Darlings, which follows the lives of three childhood stars of the 1990s including Jodie Sweetin (Full House and Fuller House), Christine Lakin (Step By Step) and Beverley Mitchell (7th Heaven), said network officials. The series joins other launched or previously announced shows including Unusually Thicke, Rock This Boat: New Kids On The Block, Big Brother After Dark, Sing It On and Easiest Game Show Ever.

“We are heading into this upfront season with great momentum, increased distribution and a diverse portfolio of original programming that delivers on our brand promise of celebrating fan-driven content and exceptional talent,” Pop president Brad Schwartz said in a release. “One year following our rebrand, Pop is defying the industry trend with growth in ratings and growth in distribution, along with a programming line-up that is uniquely poised to capture our target audience of ‘Modern Grown-ups’— socially engaged, passionate entertainment fans who love celebrating the good times in life, both those behind you and those to come.”

Pop's first and most-watched original series, the sitcom Schitt's Creek, has been renewed for a third, 13-episode series, ahead of the 8 p.m. ET/PT Wednesday, March 16, beginning of its second season. SCTV alums Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy star as the luckless Roses, who lose a fortune except for a dumpy town and motel where they re-settle.

The show was co-created and is written by Eugene Levy and his son, Daniel, who also stars, along with Annie Murphy. (Here's our review from when it launched in 2015.) The third season will air in 2017.

Pop said Schitt's Creek was its most-watched original series in total viewers and was the biggest draw on the network overall among viewers ages 18-34.

The ensemble cast also includes Chris Elliott and Jennifer Robertson as Roland and Jocelyn Schitt -- and they also star in a faux talk show companion digital series, Wake Up With The Schitt's, now available on Funny or Die.

A year into its rebirth as Pop, the channel formerly called TV Guide Network continues to add original programming, its biggest show thus far being comedy Schitt’s Creek, returning March 16 for a second season. Other returners include the rock-cruise show Rock This Boat: New Kids on the Block, the Alan Thicke reality show Unusually Thicke; and the a capella singing competition Sing It On. Easiest Game Show Ever, hosted by Michael Ian Black, launches Jan. 22. Pop claims eight consecutive quarters of year-over-year gains, including a 30% lift in primetime among the core audience of women age 25-54 in fourth-quarter 2015. And it is adding distributors, with new ones this quarter lifting Pop to about 83 million homes from about 74 million now. Pop president Brad Schwartz talked up the fan-culture-based entertainment channel with Multichannel News editor Kent Gibbons and programming editor R. Thomas Umstead in New York, ahead of Pop’s Jan. 12 presence with CBS at the Television Critics Association tour in Pasadena, Calif. (CBS and Lionsgate own Pop.) Here are some edited highlights.

MCN:We hear you are adding new distributors.

Brad Schwartz: In the New Year, we’ll be adding over 8 million homes. What I think is really interesting about that is — the story that’s driving the dialogue in our business these days is how many people are losing subs. You read about ESPN losing 4 million subs, and it affects the stock price of 10 companies, and it’s just insane. So for an emerging network like ours to actually be gaining subs, I think it’s actually a story that is unique. We’ll be launching on Cablevision Jan. 16. We’ll be launching on WideOpenWest on Feb. 1 and we’ll be launching on AT&T U-verse on March 1. All top-10 distributors will carry us on digital basic or greater. That’s an exciting place to jump off of as we approach our first year as Pop. [Editor’s note: GCI in Alaska dropped Pop on Jan. 1, but RCN and Grande will add it later this year, the network said.]

MCN:What else is resonating with distributors?

BS: We’re very efficient. That certainly resonates with distributors. When you look at ratings per sub fee on every single distributor … we are either one of the top five or, at worst, top 10 most valuable networks. We think we provide a great product for the sub fee that they are paying.

MCN:Do you think the audience has a good sense by now of what Pop is?

BS: I think we have had a very, very successful first year. Rebrands are difficult, and a lot of times when you rebrand you take a step backwards in order to take steps forward. We’re proud to say in our first quarter we went up. I think we had a respect for how do we retain the audiences we already have while building something new. So it’s been a great year, but I think we still have a long way to go. There are still millions of people out there that have not heard of the channel. But what I know from just the results and statistics and everything, the people that have found the channel are enjoying the channel. Our length of tune is up; our frequency is up; our new viewership is up — all three things that create a Nielsen point.

MCN:Do you gain from cross-promotion by CBS?

BS: I have lots of conversations with the Showtime guys — I’m like, how do you get spots on CBS? Those are huge businesses, and if there’s promo time available, they have huge businesses to take care of. But they have been very, very supportive. We get a lot of support from CBS Digital. Like when we launched Schitt’s Creek last year, CBS has this Times Square billboard over by the Port Authority [Bus Terminal in New York], they gave us inventory on there. They give us a lot of VOD advertising through all of their VOD platforms. I haven’t gotten a spot for us on the network yet — not that I haven’t asked — but they are very supportive.

MCN:You’ve added TNA’sImpact Wrestling. How does that fit in with the rest of Pop?

BS: It’s funny, when that opportunity came by, your first reaction is, “Wrestling?” And then when you really start digging into it, it’s like, OK, we’ve built this very passionate, exciting brand where we like to say it’s all about the fans. That’s the personality. Our personality is not housewives or rich kids; it’s fans. If we’re going to talk passionately about being a network for fans, that champions fans that go to music festivals like Coachella or fans that go to Comic-Con or fans that go to New Kids on the Block cruises, if that’s going to be the personality, then why can’t we also champion these amazing wrestling fans?

Pop (the former TVGN) renewed its first original scripted series, the Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara comedy Schitt's Creek. The sitcom, about a spoiled formerly-rich family forced to make do living in a motel in a depressing town the dad bought years ago as a joke, will come back in 2016 with 13 episodes, the network said.

Created by Levy and his son, Daniel Levy, who also stars, the cast also features Chris Elliott and Annie Murphy. The show, produced in Canada and airing on the CBC (which commissioned it), is distributed by ITV Studios Global Entertainment.

With SCTV’s Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara and, to a lesser extent, Chris Elliott on board, Canadian import Schitt’s Creek is a must for comedy fans. It’s well-written, nicely acted and directed and overcomes any trepidation you might have about the title. (Each episode is preceded by a warning from Pop, the former TVGN, about “scenes with coarse language.”) Levy’s son, Daniel, co-stars, and they are co-creators.

The Rose family were upper-1% rich but lost it all to a corrupt accountant — except for a depressing town called Schitt’s Creek that Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy) bought as a joke. They are forced to live there until they can, maybe, sell it to some other sucker.

Chris Elliott is the annoying mayor, Roland Schitt, to give you an idea. It’s Green Acres or Newhart revisited, with clever dialogue and the occasional broad joke, like in episode three, when Levy confronts Elliott over a road sign that’s unintentionally funny and vulgar. Levy and O’Hara’s bad parenting and the 20-something spoiled kids’ squabbles make a fun dynamic when they’re forced to live in adjoining rooms in a crappy motel, where the doors go missing or won’t lock.

Pop network will debut in 2015 its first scripted comedy series Schitt’s Creek, said network officials.

Pop, the rebranded TVGN network, will commission 13 episodes of the series, starring Eugene Levy (American Pie, Best In Show, SCTV), Catherine O’Hara (Home Alone, Best In Show) and Chris Elliott (How I Met Your Mother). The series centers on a formerly filthy rich video store magnate, his soap opera wife and their two kids who suddenly find themselves broke and forced to live in a small, depressing town, said network officials.

Eugene Levy, Daniel Levy, Andrew Barnsley, Fred Levy and Ben Feigin will serve as executive producers of the CBC-commissioned series produced by Not A Real Company Productions Inc.

“This show answers the question — what would the Kardashians do if they woke up one day, completely broke?,” said Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment and Media, POP in a statement. “Not only is this project a clever cultural commentary where the 1 percent is suddenly the 99, but it fits right in the heart of everything we’re building at our new network. It’s a dream cast, it’s hysterically funny, and it’s sure to pop.”
