Series featuring drag queens and drag shows have an elevated presence on TV. Season two of Queen of the Universe debuted on Paramount Plus March 31, and April 14 sees the season 15 winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race crowned on MTV. RuPaul’s Drag Race has also spawned a number of spinoffs.

Season three of We’re Here, the unscripted HBO show that sees drag queens venture to smallish towns across America and put on a lavish drag production there, premiered November 25.

As these shows flourish, so too does anti-drag legislation in a number of U.S. states. On March 2, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee signed a bill into law that restricts adult cabaret performances in public or in the presence of children, and also bans such gatherings within 1,000 feet of schools, parks and places of worship. (A federal judge blocked the law hours before it was set to go into effect, siding with a group that filed a lawsuit claiming the law violates the First Amendment.)

Similar bills are in the works in as many as 14 other states, reports Time, including Kentucky, Texas and Oklahoma.

It’s “an entirely different universe” for drag participants and fans than it was when We’re Here launched in 2020, said co-creator Stephen Warren. “When we created the show, we were living in a world where it felt like progress was being made,” he said. These days, “Homophobia, transphobia, drag phobia — everything is more intense than it ever was. It’s a very different world.”

RuPaul At the Center of It All

There is considerable demand for the various drag-themed shows. Linda Ong, founder and CEO of consultancy Cultique, noted how RuPaul’s Drag Race launched on Logo in 2009, then shifted to VH1 in 2017 and ended up on MTV for season 15, which began in January. “It has migrated through growing popularity,” she said. “Logo was a niche play, VH1 was less niche and now MTV.”

All are part of Paramount Global. Drag Race’s progression to bigger, broader networks “is a clear sign of drag culture’s compatibility with the industrial logics of the modern television industry,” Myles McNutt, Old Dominion University associate professor of communication, said.

Shangela, Eureka and Bob the Drag Queen protest at a “Just Say Gay” rally in Brevard County, Florida, in the HBO series We're Here. (Image credit: Greg Endries/HBO)

When We’re Here premiered, AV Club said the unscripted show “charms with personality, stage presence, and a little small-town magic.” Season three saw Bob the Drag Queen, Eureka O’Hara and Shangela put on their show in Granbury, Texas; St. George, Utah; Brevard County, Florida; Jackson, Mississippi; and Sussex, New Jersey, inspiring “drag daughters” in these towns to express their true selves in front of their families, friends and colleagues.

Warren said politicians pushing the anti-drag legislation want to stress how they, and their constituents, are much different than the performers on the drag stage. We’re Here deploys a different approach. “We try to show the opposite — we are the same,” he said. “They say, we’re not the same, we’re better.”

Queen of the Universe, hosted by Graham Norton and executive-produced by RuPaul, follows the world’s most talented drag queens as they battle it out with musical performances for the title, and countries go head-to-head as they spotlight their top talent. Judges are Mel B, Michelle Visage, Vanessa Williams and Trixie Mattel.

RuPaul’s Drag Race spinoffs have included RuPaul’s Drag U on Logo, RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars on Logo and then VH1, and RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race on VH1.

Outside the world of drag competitions, RuPaul Charles also hosts CBS’s prime game show Lingo. RuPaul was not available for comment.

More to Come?

Time will tell if we’ve hit the high-water mark for drag-themed shows. Ong suspects the success of the existing shows will prompt other studios and producers to create their own and the anti-drag legislation will spark greater viewer interest. She added that the bills and laws make drag more of a “flashpoint for culture.”

“There are so many new flashpoints people are sensitive to now,” she said. “It creates an urgency for these voices to be represented and seen.”

The various drag shows both entertain and educate viewers, according to McNutt, and their role in educating viewers is growing. “It's important to understand that while these shows embrace the high drama and elaborate performance that define drag culture, they often take on consciously educational frameworks in acknowledgment of the fact that some viewers tuning in may not have a nuanced understanding of what drag is,” he said. “The burden of responsibility on these shows is increasing amidst ongoing legislation that seeks to outlaw and vilify drag and drag queens, but these shows have always understood drag through the lens of inclusion and understanding, making it a genre well-suited to rising to the occasion amidst the drama.”

Shangela, Eureka and Bob the Drag Queen of HBO’s ‘We’re Here’ at Walt Disney World. (Image credit: Greg Endries/HBO)

Over the course of its three seasons, We’re Here on HBO has brought drag out of its liberal enclaves on the coasts, and shown the humanity behind those participating in the drag shows. Warren said drag has been around since Shakespeare, and is as American as apple pie.

Co-creator Johnnie Ingram said such shows encourage dueling parties — be they family members or political adversaries — to sit and discuss their differences. “The only way to really bridge the gap is to sit with someone and have a conversation and talk through your differences,” he said. “We’re actually a lot more alike than we think.”

Asked what the We’re Here creators might say to a politician looking to outlaw such shows, Warren responded, “Watch a few episodes of our show and call me after. I’d love to talk.”

The main headline coming out of the Television Academy’s Emmys nomination announcement Tuesday is the dominance of the streaming services. With shows from streaming services representing eight of the top 10 most nominated shows, it’s clear that the online platform resonated with viewers, critics and Emmy voters.

With that said, there were a few highlights that traditional television distributors can hang their hats on heading into the Sept. 19 Emmy Awards show telecast. Here are several takeaways for cable and broadcast networks from Tuesday’s 73rd Emmys nominations announcement.

Read Also: Streaming Shows 'The Crown,' 'The Mandalorian,' 'WandaVision' Lead Emmy Awards Nominations

• Along with 18 nominations, HBO’s recently cancelled Lovecraft Country became the first series ever to have Black actors nominated in both the drama best actor (Jonathan Rogers) and best actress (Jurnee Smollet) categories. The horror-themed show also has the distinction of having Black actors nominated in six of the seven drama acting categories. Overall, actors of color drew four of the six nominations in the best actor in a drama series category and half of the nominations for the best actress in a drama series award.

Read Also: 'Lovecraft Country' Creator Outlines New Season Plot Despite Series Cancellation

• NBC’s Saturday Night Live continues to rack up Emmy nominations. The late-night series drew 21 nominations — one off its record 22 nods for a variety show garnered in 2017— and now has a record 306th Emmy nominations overall. It was one of the few bright spots for the broadcast networks, which found itself either shut out or with only one nomination in the outstanding drama, comedy and limited series categories. NBC led all broadcast networks with 46 nominations.

• HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show is the only show that stands in the way of Saturday Night Live winning its fifth straight Emmy in the Outstanding Variety Sketch Series category as only two shows qualified for the award.

• FX was the most nominated basic cable network with 16, nine of which were generated by Pose, including a lead actress in a drama nomination for MJ Rodriguez — the first ever in the category for a lead trans person. VH1 (11) and National Geographic (10) also generated double-digit nominations. Overall 16 cable networks garnered Emmy nominations, matching the number of online services with Emmy nods.

• HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver will look to make it six Emmy wins in a row in the Outstanding Talk Series category, while VH1’s RuPaul’s Drag Race will go for four straight wins in the Outstanding Competition Program category.

Deep State has begun on Epix. The drama centers on Max (Mark Strong), an ex-spy whose past comes back to haunt him when he’s summoned from his new life in the Pyrenees by the head of a covert operation, who convinces Max to return to the field to avenge the death of his son.

Michael Wright, Epix president, said Deep State is “elevated” and “entertaining,” with the smart, high-quality vibe of a premium cable series.

Deep state is defined as “a body of people, typically influential members of government agencies or the military, believed to be involved in the secret manipulation or control of government policy.” It’s a phrase that’s picked up in popularity since President Donald Trump moved into the White House.

Trump factors into Deep State, at least per the Boston Herald. “If Donald Trump produced 24, it would look like Deep State,” it said. “Epix’s new conspiracy thriller might be the first drama with the president squarely in mind — and as it turns out, a significant character, albeit off-screen.”

The show “speaks to the notion of people who work behind the scenes who may not have the same agenda as our elected officials,” Wright said.

Just as Deep State takes off, RuPaul’s Drag Race is heading toward its fizzy finale. The reunion special happens June 21, and the season ten closer is June 28. Host RuPaul Charles promised a season where the “shenanigans are off the mother-tucking charts,” and has pretty much delivered.

"RuPaul’s Drag Race"

The show shifted from Logo to VH1 last season. Drag Race is on pace for its highest ratings yet, said Pamela Post, senior VP of original programming, MTV, VH1 and Logo. “I’m constantly surprised by the audience and how it responds year in and year out,” she said. “It’s been a bit of a phenomenon.”

RuPaul’s Drag Race used to emulate pop culture, Post said, but now pop culture emulates Drag Race, evident in the show’s catchphrases — say, sashay away, or shade — popping up in conversation and on t-shirts. “It all becomes part of current-day language,” Post said.

RuPaul’s Drag Race was nominated for eight Emmyslast year, including outstanding realitycompetition series. RuPaul won for hosting.

Which contestant stands out in season 10? Post said they all do, including Eureka, who left season nine due to injury; Aquaria, who started watching the show as a kid; Kameron, “a force to be reckoned with”; and Asia, who “all around delivers the goods.”

How many more seasons for Drag Race? “Hard to say,” said Post. “Ru is going strong. We haven’t seen the show slow down, we’ve only seen it grow.”
