National Geographic Channel Friday will air a documentary special, Rise Up: The Legacy Of Nat Turner, that coincides with the theatrical release of Birth Of A Nation.

The documentary, produced by Birth of A Nation executive producer Nate Parker and hosted by the film’s star Roger Guenveur Smith, showcases the life of Turner, who led a slave uprising in Southampton County, VA. in 1831.

Fox Searchlight Pictures’ The Birth Of A Nation, which tells the dramatic story of Turner’s historic liberation movement, debuts in theaters Friday.
