Netflix on March 22 brings to life iconic politician Shirley Chisholm in its original film Shirley, starring Regina King as the groundbreaking U.S. Congresswoman.  

Actor Brad James, who plays Black Panther Party founder Huey Newton in the John Ridley-directed film, said it was a “heavy lift” to tell the story of the trailblazing Chisholm, whose 1972 run as the first Black candidate to seek a major party’s nomination for president is chronicled in the film. He added the cast – led by King, and including Lance Reddick, Lucas Hedges, Terrence Howard and Christina Jackson – was more than up to the task of putting in perspective the historical significance of Chisholm’s accomplishment. 

“The deck is stacked in terms of who we have in this film,” James said. “The caliber of work is paramount to telling an accurate representation of what historically happened.”

Netflix takes a shot at the western genre with its new original film, The Harder They Fall, which debuts on the streaming service Nov. 3.

The movie, co-written by Jeymes Samuel and Boaz Yakin, follows an outlaw who discovers that his enemy is being released from prison, so he brings together a gang to seek revenge, according to Netflix. The series stars Jonathan Majors, Idris Elba, Regina King, Delroy Lindo and Zazie Beetz.

Elba said that the movie takes a look at the Western genre from a different perspective. 

“I really feel in our community that there’s a real value to the film that restores or at least educates some folks on the history of America. Especially when it comes to Westerns, one thing that Jeymes and I spoke about was the history of Black towns in America,” Elba said in a Netflix press release. “It’s so deep and people don’t know, they’ve been wiped off the face of the map, practically, and so this movie explores that.”

The Harder They Fall, which debuted in select theaters Oct. 22, is produced by Samuel, Shawn “Jay Z” Carter, James Lassiter and Lawrence Bender.

Netflix has dropped a first-look trailer for its upcoming Western-themed original movie The Harder They Fall, starring Regina King and Idris Elba.

Netflix describes the action-filled film as follows: When outlaw Nat Love (Jonathan Majors) discovers that his enemy Rufus Buck (Idris Elba) is being released from prison he rounds up his gang to track Rufus down and seek revenge. Those riding with him in this assured, righteously new school Western include his former love Stagecoach Mary (Zazie Beetz), his right and left hand men — hot-tempered Bill Pickett (Edi Gathegi) and fast drawing Jim Beckwourth (R.J. Cyler)—and a surprising adversary-turned-ally. Rufus Buck has his own fearsome crew, including “Treacherous” Trudy Smith (Regina King) and Cherokee Bill (LaKeith Stanfield), and they are not a group that knows how to lose.

The Harder They Fall is executive produced by Shawn Carter, James Lassiter, Lawrence Bender and Jeymes Samuel.

ABC has revealed the presenters at the 93rd Oscars, which airs live on ABC Sunday, April 25. Angela Bassett, Halle Berry, Bong Joon Ho, Don Cheadle, Bryan Cranston, Laura Dern, Harrison Ford, Regina King, Marlee Matlin, Rita Moreno, Joaquin Phoenix, Brad Pitt, Reese Witherspoon, Renée Zellweger and Zendaya will present Academy Awards.

Jesse Collins, Stacey Sher and Steven Soderbergh are producing the event. “In keeping with our awards-show-as-a-movie approach, we’ve assembled a truly stellar cast of stars,” said the trio. “There’s so much wattage here, sunglasses may be required.”

Additional talent will be announced later. 

Best Picture is between Judas and the Black Messiah, Mank, Minari, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman, Sound of Metal, The Father and The Trial of the Chicago 7. 

The 93rd Oscars will be held at Union Station Los Angeles and the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and international locations via satellite. The event starts at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET. 

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hosts the Oscars. Glenn Weiss directs. 

Dan Levy, co-creator and star of Emmy magnet Schitt’s Creek, will host NBC’s Saturday Night Live Feb. 6. It will be Levy’s first time hosting SNL. Phoebe Bridgers is the musical guest that night. 

Schitt’s Creek got nine Emmys in September, with four for Levy. 

John Krasinski, who starred in The Office and directed and starred in film A Quiet Place, hosts Jan. 30, with Machine Gun Kelly the musical guest. It will be Krasinski’s first time hosting, and Kelly’s first time on the show as well.

Regina King hosts SNL for the first time Feb. 13. Her TV work includes Southland and American Crime, and she directed new film One Night in Miami. Nathaniel Rateliff is on the musical stage Feb. 13. 

Saturday Night Live is produced in association with Broadway Video. The creator and executive producer is Lorne Michaels. 

Every season of SNL is now streaming on Peacock.

AXS TV celebrity profile series The Big Interview with Dan Rather will return with four new episodes in January beginning with a profile of rock superstar Perry Farrell, the network said Monday.

Farrell, the front man for rock groups Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros, will sit with Rather for the show's Jan. 6 episode, followed by country music star Luke Combs on Jan. 13, said the network. 

Two other episodes in January will feature Academy Award winner Regina King and country music trailblazer Randy Travis, said the network. 

AXS TV said it will air more new episodes of The Big Interview in early spring.

HBO's The Watchmen was the big winner within the limited series or movies category, taking home four Emmys during the primetime telecast, including best limited series.  

Watchmen topped Hulu’s Little Fires Everywhere, FX’s Mrs. America, as well as Netflix’s Unbelievable and Unorthodox for limited series honors. Watchmen star Regina King won top honors nabbing the prize for lead actress in a limited series or movie -- her fourth Emmy win. She won in a tough category that included Cate Blanchett (Mrs. America), Shira Haas (Unorthodox), Octavia Spencer (Self Made) and Kerry Washington (Little Fires Everywhere).

The show also picked up Emmys for outstanding writing in a limited series or movie, as well as outstanding supporting actor in a limited series or movie for Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Overall Watchmen won 11 Emmys (including seven Creative Arts Emmy Awards.)

Mark Ruffalo won outstanding lead actor in a limited series or movie for his dual role in HBO’s I know This Much Is True, beating out Jeremy Irons (Watchmen), Hugh Jackman (Bad Education), Paul Mescal (Normal People) and Jeremy Pope (Hollywood).

Maria Schrader won the Emmy for outstanding directing in a limited series, special or movie  for Netflix’s Unorthodox.

Uzo Aduba won outstanding supporting actress in a limited series or movie for her role as Shirley Chisholm in FX’s Mrs. America.

Netflix has signed director, producer, and award winning actress Regina King to a multi-year first look deal, the streaming service said Wednesday.

King’s production company Royal Ties will produce films and series for Netflix, with King's sister Reina King serving as head of production, said Netflix. King most recently won an 2019 Academy Award for her role as Sharon Rivers in feature film If Beale Street Could Talk as well as an 2018 Emmy Award for her role as Latrice Butler in Seven Seconds.

“Regina King is a multi-faceted talent both behind and in front of the camera," said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer for Netflix in a statement. "She’s been a trailblazer for years, with boundless creativity and impeccable taste in projects, and we couldn’t be more thrilled that she will bring her formidable talents to Netflix.” 

Added Regina King, “I am beyond thrilled to join the Netflix family. They are at the top of their game and as an artist I am so excited to come play in this wonderful sandbox they have created for storytellers.”
