HBO and Prime Video will look to scare up viewers with two new sci-fi shows that highlight this week’s show debuts.

HBO on April 10 will premiere the Joss Whedon-produced series The Nevers, which follows a group of women with unique abilities -- and their detractors -- in Victorian-era England. 

Prime Video on April 9 will debut the Lena Waithe-produced series Them, which follows a African-American family in the 1950s who move from the Jim Crow south to California for a better life, but encounter horrors both real and supernatural, according to the streaming service.

Queen of the South is back on USA Network April 7 with the start of season five. It will be the final season and there are 10 episodes. 

Queen of the South tells the powerful story of Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga), who is forced to run from a Mexican cartel and seek refuge in America, and her eventual rise to power over her own drug trafficking empire.

“For five incredible seasons, Queen of the South has captivated us with brilliant storytelling and bold, powerful characters,” said Frances Berwick, chairman, Entertainment Networks. “This series broke boundaries for the genre, and we are so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with this incredible team of creators, cast and crew along with our studio partners at 20th Television and UCP.  As we close this final chapter, we look forward to a great season culminating in a finale that will give our fans the ending they deserve.”

The series is based on the novel La Reina Del Sur, by Arturo Pérez-Reverte. 

“We could not be prouder of our entire cast and crew that joined us on this magnificent journey,” said executive producers Dailyn Rodriguez, Ben Lobato and David Friendly. “Queen of the South began shooting in Mexico City, brought us to faraway places like Malta and Colombia and finally landed in New Orleans. We cannot wait to share the explosive final season with our devoted fans. And, of course, we could not have made this show without the talented and tireless Alice Braga, who brought our queen to life."

Queen of the South is USA’s top series among 18-49 and 25-54 demos, the network said. 

The Weekly, from FX and The New York Times, has begun. The series offers a closeup of a Times story, showing exactly how the reporter and editor get a truly impactful narrative together.

The day after episodes premiere, they stream on Hulu.

The Weekly is something of an extension of the Times podcast The Daily. “Television felt like the next frontier for us,” Sam Dolnick, NYT assistant managing editor and Weekly executive producer, said. He hopes The Weekly will “reach lots of new people who don’t necessarily read The New York Times, or think The New York Times is not for them.”

The Times folks pitched the show in Hollywood, and Dolnick said FX emerged as the unlikely partner, since the network isn’t about news or unscripted. “We ended up really connecting with them in the room,” Dolnick said.

John Landgraf, FX chairman, noted how reading the newspaper is an intellectual experience, and sought to make the series an emotional one. Dolnick calls him “our key ally.”

The Times is pumped to also have Hulu on board. “It would be crazy to sit out the streaming revolution,” Dolnick said.

The Weekly launches at a time when President Donald Trump speaks frequently of fake news. Viewers will “see the lengths reporters go to find stories, and the lengths they go to to get the stories right,” Dolnick said. “When you see that kind of journalism up close, I think it’s really hard to dismiss what these reporters do as fake news.”

And season four of Queen of the South begins on USA Network June 6, another chapter in the saga of trafficking kingpin Teresa Mendoza. After three seasons in Dallas, the new one is set in New Orleans. Everyone got a kick out of shooting in the Big Easy.

“It’s hard to fake cities for other cities,” executive producer David Friendly said. New Orleans is “a little more mysterious, a little more dangerous. It’s a great place to set the show.”

Season two of La Reina del Sur, which translates to, yes, Queen of the South, is under way on Telemundo. Friendly said there is much respect for what’s going on over at Telemundo, as that series does 65 episodes per season. Both touch on a similar theme: “The American Dream turned upside down,” Friendly said.

The unofficial motto for season four of Queen? “Heavy is the head that wears the crown,” shared Friendly.

His highlight of the season comes early, when Mendoza, played by Alice Braga, flies around on a Ducati motorcycle. “It fits the show like a glove,” Friendly said. “I think we’re opening with a bang.”

What appealed to USA Network about the telenovela format – in the form of upcoming drama Queen of the South – is what appeals to viewers of Spanish-language, action-oriented “super series” and the new category of bio-musicals on Telemundo: compelling heroes and stories that attract young, multicultural audiences.

“We look for really distinctive, noisy concepts that we feel like will break out,” Alex Sepiol, senior vice president, original scripted programming, at USA Network said during a panel session at the Hispanic Television Summit on Thursday at the Park Central Hotel in New York City. “Stories that have urgency to them, that have really memorable characters at their core. Which is why we’re so excited about Queen of the South with Teresa Mendoza. It’s such an incredibly memorable character, she’s so bold and fun and just unique, that we feel like she will make a tremendous impression on the marketplace.”

Queen of the South is adapted from a novel, but that novel was previously made into a hit novela, La Reina del Sur, on Telemundo. The lead character, Teresa Mendoza (played by Alice Braga, pictured, in the USA version), starts out as a victim whose boyfriend, a drug dealer in Mexico, is murdered. She flees to America, though, and ends up learning the trade and becoming a power in the drug cartel.

Perla Farias, Telemundo’s vice president of novela development, shared the panel stage with Sepiol and talked about how the novela genre has over time morphed into several categories in the network’s primetime. They include, along with telenovelas and super series, bio-musicals (like Telemundo’s new hit Celia), bio-dramas and romantic comedies, she said.

The NBCUniversal-owned Spanish-language broadcaster currently has 12 different stories in different stages of development, including the faster-paced, shorter-running super series that Farias and Telemundo are credited with creating. They are heavy on action, but have melodramatic elements, Farias said. This past April, the season-three return of El Señor de los Cielos (Lord of the Skies), a super series about an imprisoned drug lord, set a record for a Telemundo series premiere.

“We like to say amongst ourselves that the [super] series is ‘los narcos también lloran,’ which means ‘the narcos also cry,’ ” she said. “We get to see these violent characters, but at the same time we get to see the human frailty and passions. I think that’s what makes them so compelling.”

Alan J. Sokol, a former Telemundo and InterMedia executive who’s now CEO of Hemisphere Media Group (which has Spanish-language cable channels including telenovela channel Pasiones), said Telemundo deserved applause for championing faster-paced iterations of the genre.

“The way people live today doesn’t necessarily lend itself to watching six months of five-day-a week novelas,” he said. Unitarios that present a self-contained story within an hour are also a format with great potential, he said.

USA Network Tuesday added to its scripted cable lineup with the pick-up of drama Queen of The South, the network announced Tuesday.

The 13-episode series, produced by Fox 21 Television Studios and Universal Cable Productions and set to premiere in 2016, stars Alice Braga (City Of God) as a widow of a major drug dealer who becomes the eventual leader of the cartel. The story is an adaptation of La Reina del Sur, the highly successful Telemundo novela.

“From script to inception, Queen of The South had us hooked,” said Chris McCumber, President of USA Network. “Alice Braga does an outstanding job playing Teresa Mendoza, a determined woman who defies all odds, to not only survive, but to thrive in an unfamiliar world.”
