Max will bring back its thriller series Pretty Little Liars for a second season with the May 9 premiere of Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.

The sophomore campaign of the series follows the events of the Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin first season and focuses on the four main high school characters as they attend summer school. Amid their fun summer jobs and love interests, a new villain comes to town that will put them all to the test, according to Max.   

Series regulars Bailee Madison, Chandler Kinney, Zaria, Malia Pyles and Maia Reficco star in the second season, along with Mallory Bechtel, Sharon Leal, Alex Aiono, Jordan Gonzalez and Elias Kacavas. 

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School is executive-produced by Leslie Morganstein, Gina Girolamo, Marlene King, and Michael Grassi. 

Freeform will premiere the spinoff to its successful thriller series Pretty Little Liars on March 20, the network said during its Television Critics Association winter tour session on Tuesday.

Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists -- based on the novel The Perfectionists with characters from the Sara Shepard novel Pretty Little Liars -- follows the overachieving residents of a small town where the high-stakes environment eventually causes the murder of one of its residents, according to the network. Pretty Little Liars stars Janel Parrish and Sasha Pieterse (pictured above) reprise their roles from the new series. 

Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists is produced by Alloy Entertainment and Long Lake Media in association with Warner Horizon Scripted Television. I. Marlene King (Pretty Little Liars, Famous in Love) serves as executive producer with Charlie Craig (Pretty Little Liars, The 100), Leslie Morgenstein (Pretty Little Liars, The Vampire Diaries), Gina Girolamo (The 100, The Originals) and Joseph Dougherty (Pretty Little Liars). 

Freeform has ordered a pilot spinoff of its popular Pretty Little Liars series starring two characters from the original show, the network said Monday.

 The series, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, will star Sasha Pieterse and Janel Parrish reprising their roles as Alison DiLaurentis and Mona Vanderwaal respectively and is based on the popular book series The Perfectionists, written by Sara Shepard, who also penned the bestselling book series Pretty Little Liars.

According to Freeform, the series revolves around characters in the town of Beacon Heights where everything seems to be perfect until the stress of needing to be perfect leads to the town’s first murder.

“Pretty Little Liars was a cultural phenomenon so it's no wonder fans wanted more." said Karey Burke, executive vice president, programming and development, Freeform in a statement. "We can't wait to continue Marlene King's rich and revolutionary storytelling with a new crop of leading ladies from Beacon Heights who will hold just as many secrets and lies as Rosewood did."

The premiere episode of the final season of Freeform’s drama series Pretty Little Liars was the most social TV show on Tuesday, according to Nielsen.

The series, which will end its run in June after seven seasons, on Tuesday garnered 549,000 social media interactions from 350,000 unique Facebook and Twitter users to lead all entertainment-based shows, Nielsen said. NBC’s The Voice was second with 321,000 interactions, followed by USA Network’s WWE SmackDown, which pinned down 225,000 social media interactions.

Fox News Channel’s The O’Reilly Factor and Fox’s Prison Break rounded out the top five series and specials for the day.

Fox Sports 1 and Fox Deportes’ coverage of the UEFA Champions League soccer match between Real Madrid and FC Bayern Munich topped all live sports events for the day with 1.3 million Facebook and Twitter interactions. TNT’s Chicago Bulls-Boston Celtics NBA Playoffs telecast finished second with more than 1 million social interactions, according to Nielsen.

Pretty Little Liars’ seventh season, premiering in April 2017, will be the drama’s last, Freeform announced Monday (Aug. 29).

The last 10 episodes will conclude with a two-hour finale. The finale will be followed by the premiere of Famous In Love, a new series from Liars creator and showrunner I. Marlene King.

The news was announced during a Facebook Live interview with King and Liars cast members Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell and Sasha Pieterse.

The summer finale of Liars airs Tuesday on Freeform.

NBCUniversal's coverage of the Olympics across all its networks comprised the top seven TV shows mentioned on Twitter and Facebook last week, according to Nielsen Social.

The top show in social interactions on those two platforms was the Aug. 19 Olympics coverage, with 4,459,000 uniques (defined by Nielsen as "unique social media accounts that have authored original content related to a linear TV episode or engaged with that content"), followed by the Aug. 21 coverage, with 4,069,000 uniques; Aug. 18, with 3,971,000; Aug. 16 with 3,898,000; Aug. 15 with 3.891,000; Aug. 17 with 3,705,000; and Aug. 20 with 3,144,000.

In fact all of the top 10 TV shows in social media were sports programming, with the UFC PPV fight between Connor McGregor and Nate Diaz Aug. 20 coming in eighth (1,930,000 uniques), followed by a couple of NFL preseason games (Miami v. Dallas at 860,000 and Philadelphia v. Pittsburgh at 452,000).

The top non-sports TV offering in social last week was Freeform's Pretty Little Liars at 260,000 uniques.

Nielsen Social captures Tweets and posts about TV shows from three hours before through three hours after each initial telecast. Unique Tweet authors are defined as having a unique Twitter account that sent "at least one Tweet ascribed to a specific TV episode."

The Summer Olympics in Rio dominated TV-related social media posts on Facebook and Twitter Tuesday night (Aug. 16) with more than 3 million uniques, according to Nielsen Social.

"Uniques" are defined as "social media accounts that have authored original content related to a linear TV episode or engaged with that content."

The Olympics aired was across six networks -- CNBC, MSNBC, NBC, NBC Universo, NBCSN, USA Network -- over several hours, with 3,410,000 Facebook uniques and 488,000 Twitter accounts.

In fact, sports (and faux sports) programming took three of the top four social spots, with the Red Sox and Orioles game on MLB Network placing third, with 102,000 uniques, and WWE Smackdown on USA placing fourth, with 87,000 uniques

Second for the night was Freeform's Pretty Little Liars, with 260,000 uniques.

Episodes from Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars and MTV’s Scream generated the most tweets of any television show yesterday, according to Nielsen.

Liars garnered 65,000 tweets from 19,000 unique Twitter authors, while 6,000 Twitter users posted 34,000 tweets about Scream Tuesday night, according to Nielsen’s daily Twitter TV ratings.

NBC’s America’s Got Talent, OWN’s The Have and the Have Nots and POP’s iMPACT Wrestling rounded out the top five most tweeted shows on Tuesday.

Freeform will look to reach its young millennial audience beyond primetime with its first ever late night show, one of several news series, movies and specials announced as part of its 2016-17 programming slate, the network said in advance of its New York upfront presentation Thursday.

Three months after changing its name and brand from ABC Family, Freeform officials said it plans to offer new original content that reaches young viewers to air alongside its lineup of existing shows like Pretty Little Liars,Young & Hungry, Baby Daddy, Shadowhunters and Switched at Birth.

“Freeform is a brand built for the fresh taste of a modern generation who value open-mindedness, fluidity, immediacy and who don’t like to be fenced-in,” said Freeform president Tom Ascheim in a statement. “As we continue to evolve and deliver on our brand promise, it’s important that we put our audience at the center of everything we do and connect with them in all the places they are and in the ways they prefer – on our cable network, in the digital space and with ‘Freeform Fest’ IRL (in real life).”

Among the new shows the network will look to roll out over the next few months is Later Bitches, a half-hour comedic talk show focusing on pop culture featuring as yet named female hosts. The Daily Show producers Jennifer Flanz and Elise Terrell will consult on the series, which is described as late-night talk meets Sex and the City.

Freeform will team with Marvel Comics to develop a new series Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger, which chronicles two teenagers involved in an interracial romance who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love. Other new shows include Famous In Love, starring Bella Thorne as an ordinary college student who has to deal with a new life after getting a big role in a Hollywood blockbuster; and Issues, which takes a behind the scenes look at a women’s magazine based on the life of Cosmopolitan editor in chief Joanna Coles.

On the non-scripted series front, the network in August will launch Cheer Squad, which follows the World Cheerleading Champion Great White Sharks cheerleading squad; and Freeform Presents: Snapshot,” a two one-hour documentaries focusing on big pop culture moments from the producers of “30 for 30” and ESPN Films.

A sci-fi drama from executive producer McG, “Lore” tells the story of the lone survivor of an ancient race of paranormal beings who is abducted and forced to put his extraordinary abilities to work for the government. When an old nemesis resurfaces, this arrangement turns into an uneasy alliance, and the only hope for survival in a dangerous world of mystery and magic. The series is written by Zack Stentz (“Thor”) and executive-produced by McG, Mary Viola, Zach Stentz, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross.

Misfits

A drama based on a hit British series, a group of twenty-somethings are exposed to a mysterious chemical, and subsequently develop peculiar superpowers. The series is from ABC Signature Studios and executive-produced by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.

New People

Executive-produced by Joel Silver and writer/director Don Roos, in association with Lionsgate, this dramedy focuses on a middle class family who adopted identical twin boys at birth. One is all boy, one grew up trans. The series is inspired by the book “Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family.”

Nine Years Under

From executive producer Will Packer, “Nine Years Under” tells the story of a law school grad who blows off the bar exam to take a job at a funeral home after the sudden death of her mother.  Along with Packer, Korin Huggins executive-produces. 

Rising

Executive-produced by Selena Gomez, Mandy Teefey and Aaron Kaplan, this drama is set in a low-income Latino neighborhood, and is told through the eyes of an 18-year-old girl destined for greatness. Ana Cobarrubias will be a consultant on the project.

Alone Together

From The Lonely Island’s Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, two misfits from different backgrounds try to make their way into the vain and status-obsessed culture of Los Angeles. Along the way, they find salvation in their male/female, strictly platonic friendship.

Made in LA

From executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, along with Mila Kunis, “Made in LA” is a half-hour comedy set in the world of fashion, centering on two friends who join their different skill sets to become fashion entrepreneurs. The series is loosely inspired by the creators of fashion label Juicy Couture and the authors of “The Glitter Plan.” The series is from ABC Signature Studios.

Paige One

Elizabeth Banks executive-produces this single-camera comedy that follows the insulated life of a children’s book author who hates children. Her life is turned upside down when her brother shows up on her door with his two young daughters.  The show comes from Warner Horizon TV, and executive producers Banks, Max Handelman and Susan Jaffee.

A series of short videos acquired from School of Doodle, an organization that creates inspiring content for girls and women. This series will celebrate the arts and provide the audience the tools to turn creative potential into success. 

Millennial-targeted series dominated the TV twitter ratings last night, led by Freeform's drama series Pretty Little Liars, according to Nielsen.

Pretty Little Liars generated 131,000 tweets reaching 1.5 million unique Twitter users Tuesday night, making it the most talked about TV show on Twitter, according to Nielsen’s daily Twitter TV ratings for Jan. 26.

MTV’s horror-themed series Teen Wolf drew 124,000 tweets to finish second, followed by superhero-themed shows The Flash (CW) and Marvel’s Agent Carter (ABC).

NBA TV’s live coverage of the Oklahoma City Thunder-New York Knicks NBA game was the most tweeted live sports telecast of the night, drawing 81,000 tweets reaching a unique audience of 3 million Twitter users, said Nielsen.

ABC Family’s long-running drama series Pretty Little Liars drew 3.1 million viewers Tuesday as viewers tuned in for a much-anticipated character reveal.

The summer season finale for the series, which finally revealed the identity of “A”,  pulled in its best audience in 18 months and ranks as the series’ second most watched summer finale on record in the network’s core 18-34 and 18-49 demos, according to network officials.

 Summer to date, Pretty Little Liars is cable most watched series among  Women 18-34 and Females 12-34 and is the top scripted cable TV series among  Adults 18-34 and Viewers 12-34, said the network.

On the social media front, the Pretty Little Liars finale was the most tweeted TV series telecast of thus far this summer and the third most tweeted cable TV series episode on record, generating more than  1.6 million tweets, which were seen by a Twitter TV audience of 6.2 million unique users and generated over 68 million Twitter TV impressions, according to Nielsen.

The episode easily topped HBO’s Hark Knocks: Training Camp With the Houston Texans, which reached a Twitter TV audience of nearly 2 million unique users, said Nielsen.

Fox Broadcasting’s 2015 MLB All-Star Game telecast hit a home run on Twitter last night, drawing more than 600,000 Tweets, according to Nielsen’s daily Twitter TV Ratings report.

The game, which the American League won 6 to 3 over the National League, drew 606,000 tweets reaching more than 7 million unique Twitter users topping all sports and entertainment programming for the night, according to Nielsen.

The series, in which a secret governmental agency uses a young woman to hack into the brains of dead people to help solve crimes, finished as cable’s second biggest launch of the 2014/15 season among females 12-34 behind AMC’s Better Call Saul, according to ABC Family.

Stitchers benefited from its lean-in, the sixth season debut of Pretty Little Liars which averaged 2.3 million viewers, according to Nielsen. The premiere was slightly below last year’s season five premiere episode, which drew 2.7 million watchers.

Pretty Little Liars also drew strong numbers in key demos including females 12-34 (1.2 million viewers), adults 18-34 (945,000), adults 12-34 (1.4 million), women 18-49 (1.1 million) and adults 18-49 (1.3 million), according to Nielsen.

ABC Family will preview the Jan. 6 winter premiere episode of Pretty Little Liars on social media service Snapchat, the network said Monday.

Fans of the series can tune in to Snapchat to watch the first three minutes of tomorrow’s episode in short “snaps” throughout the day until 7 p.m., an hour before the premiere of the series, said network officials.

Pretty Little Liars is one of the network’s most social show. The series is the top ranked scripted series on Instagram, the top scripted show on Pinterest and represents the top six most tweeted episodes for a scripted series, according to the network.

Santa, of course, will come down the chimney in many ways during ABC Family's annual stunt, but the "25 Days of Christmas" gambit will feature holiday-themed episodes of four of the network's key original drama series for the first time.

Running from Dec. 1-25, this year's “25 Days of Christmas” will feature the holiday-episode debuts of Pretty Little Liars, The Fosters, Switched at Birth and Chasing Life during the week of Dec. 8. They will join holiday versions of comedies Melissa andJoey and Baby Daddy.

 The holiday cheer continues with the network television premieere of Arthur Christmas, featuring the voices of James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie and Jim Broadbent as Santa, on Dec. 6 at 9 p.m.  (ET/PT) and the ABC Family debut of the new special Toy Story That Time Forgot the following night at 8 p.m.
