Showtime Sports will debut on January 6 a documentary series focusing on a Minneapolis-based high school football team in the aftermath of the police killing of George Floyd.

The four-part series, Boys in Blue, chronicles the North Community High School football team during the 2021 season as the players come of age in the aftermath of Floyd's death. The team, made up of mostly Black student-athletes coached and mentored by members of the Minneapolis Police Department, presses on as the officers and students find common ground on the field and kinship in the drive to win a state championship, according to Showtime. As players and coaches return to the field with visions of championship glory, their sense of normalcy and optimism are tested like never before, said the network.

Boys in Blue is executive produced by Peter Berg, Matthew Goldberg, Brandon Carroll and Rob Ford.

Berg said in a statement: "Having lived in Minneapolis/St. Paul, I could not reconcile the city I loved so much with the horrific murder of George Floyd, and I felt compelled to find a way to personally respond,” said Berg. “Spending a year with the North High Football team has provided me access into the soul of a beautiful American community that was deeply suffering. We have captured the wins and the losses, on the field and off. We have been trusted by so many teachers, coaches, parents and students, all living in the immediate wake of the George Floyd murder, and the complexities of trying to survive and find joy in very challenging times. I have so much love and respect for the Minneapolis North community and it is my hope that through Boys in Blue we may get fresh understandings of these issues and find paths to empathy and hope."■

HBO offered a first look trailer for its upcoming crime drama series We Own The City, which debuts April 25.

The six-episode series, based on the book by Baltimore Sun reporter Justin Fenton, focuses on the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force.

We Own The City explores the corruption and moral collapse that befell Baltimore in which the policies of drug prohibition and mass arrest were championed at the expense of actual police work, according to HBO.

The series stars Treat Williams, Gabrielle Carteris, Tray Chaney, Domenick Lombardozzi, Thaddeus Street, Jermaine Crawford and Nathan E. Corbett.

We Own The City is executive produced by George Pelecanos and David Simon, Reinaldo Marcus Green, Nina K. Noble, Ed Burns, and Kary Antholis.

AT&T is sending a clear signal that more needs to be done to correct systemic racism and that the current attention on the presidential election and pandemic should not obscure the needed, ongoing, focus on that issue.

In a blog post, Ken McNeely, president of AT&T's Western Region, who is heading up the company's social justice issues working group, said that more work needs to be done, particularly on the federal level, on the "critical need" for racial equality and police reform.

McNeely said the killing of George Floyd and others "led to a resurrection of the spirit of the civil rights movement, and that spirit instilled in many Americans an understanding of the need for equitable policing, and a new relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve."

While he said that AT&T has been a leader in civil rights advocacy, citing a half-dozen state efforts it has been involved with, including supporting hate crime bills and helping Black-owned businesses (was well as its $3 billion investment in Black-owned business suppliers). But he also said that was not enough, though it was a start.

"As valuable as state and local action are, successfully addressing this will require action at the federal level to achieve full and equal treatment for all Americans," he wrote.... [W]orking together we can redefine the relationship between law enforcement and those they serve," the vast majority of which, he said, "are dedicated public servants who do their work with courage and decency."

A&E has extended the season of its unscripted series Live PD to 21 episodes, the network said Wednesday.

The series, which follows live six police departments as they patrol their respective communities, is averaging 1.1 million viewers (Nielsen Live+7 ratings) since launching this past October, according to network officials. In addition, the network will offer two Saturday episodes on Feb. 4 and Feb. 11, said A&E.
