Disney Plus Tuesday announced a September 8 premiere date for its live-action retelling of the classic Disney film Pinocchio as part of a teaser trailer for the movie. 

The movie, which will debut as part of the 2022 Disney Plus Day celebration, stars Tom Hanks, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, Cynthia Erivo, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Keegan-Michael Key, Lorraine Bracco and Luke Evens, according to the streaming service.

Robert Zemeckis will direct the film, which retells the classic story of a wooden puppet who embarks on a trilling adventure to become a real boy. Jack Rapke, Alexandra Derbyshire and Jeremy Johns serve as executive producers of Pinocchio.

Disney Plus said it will announce more Disney Plus Day premieres from Disney, Pixar, Marvel Studios, Star Wars and National Geographic.

Streaming platforms are using Christmas Day to launch high-profile projects. On Disney Plus, Pixar film Soul goes live Dec. 25. Jamie Foxx leads the cast in a movie about Joe, who lands the gig of his dreams at the hot jazz club in town. A misstep puts Joe in a fantastical place called The Great Before. He teams up with soul 22 (Tina Fey) and they find answers to some of life’s biggest questions. 

The animated film, a mix of comedy and fantasy, is rated PG.

HBO Max has Wonder Woman 1984. The sequel to the 2017 movie, Patty Jenkins directs and Gal Gadot and Chris Pine star, along with Kristen Wiig. Wonder Woman 1984 goes live at noon ET Dec. 25 and is available on the platform for 31 days. 

The Warner Bros. film is rated PG-13.

Netflix, meanwhile, has the series Bridgerton, based on Julia Quinn’s novels, premiering Christmas Day. Shonda Rhimes is behind the show, a London-set period piece about eight siblings looking for love and happiness in high society.

“This smart feminist take on Regency England romance unveils the glittering, wealthy, sexual, painful, funny and sometimes lonely lives of the women and men in London's high society marriage mart as told through the eyes of the powerful Bridgerton family,” according to Netflix. 

Phoebe Dynevor, Jonathan Bailey and Nicola Coughlan are in the cast. 

Chris Van Dusen is executive producer alongside Rhimes and Betsy Beers through Shondaland.

The Walt Disney Co. said that the new Pixar film Soul will have its exclusive debut on the Disney Plus streaming service on Dec. 25.

The film will be released theatrically in international markets where Disney Plus isn’t available.

Because the COVID-19 pandemic has closed theaters, media companies are releasing films on streaming platforms as a way to draw new subscribers to those services. Soul had been scheduled to be in theaters on Nov. 20.

“We are thrilled to share Pixar’s spectacular and moving Soul with audiences direct to Disney Plus in December,” said Disney CEO Bob Chapek. “A new original Pixar film is always a special occasion, and this truly heartwarming and humorous story about human connection and finding one’s place in the world will be a treat for families to enjoy together this holiday season.”

Soul features the voices of  Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Phylicia Rashad, Ahmir Questlove Thompson, Angela Bassett and Daveed Diggs.

It comes from filmmaker Pete Docter, who directed Inside Out and co-director/writer Kemp Powers.

Disney will make its animated film Onward available for digital download today (March 20) and on streaming service Disney+ on April 3, the company said Friday.

The Pixar-produced film, which debuted in theaters March 6, is the latest film Disney is offering via on demand or through its streaming services well within its traditional 90-day theatrical window in the wake of recent closing of major movie theater chains to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.  Disney last week moved up the premiere of Frozen 2 on Disney+ to March 15, three months ahead of its originally scheduled premiere.

“While we’re looking forward to audiences enjoying our films on the big screen again soon, given the current circumstances, we are pleased to release this fun, adventurous film to digital platforms early for audiences to enjoy from the comfort of their homes,” said Onward director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae in a statement.
