Disney Brings Back 'Phineas and Ferb', Disney Plus Premieres 'Bono & The Edge' St. Patrick's Day: TCA

PASADENA, CALIF. — Disney is bringing back Phineas and Ferb, which debuted 15 years ago on Disney Channel, Ayo Davis, Disney Branded Television president, said at the Television Critics Association press tour Friday. Creator Dan Povenmire joined Davis onstage and said, “A whole generation of kids and parents really took this show into their hearts and it still means so much to them.”

Disney and Povenmire agreed on two seasons and 40 episodes as part of an overall deal. Povenmire's Hamster & Gretel also got a second season order.

“I just can’t wait to really dive into and get back into these characters,” Povenmire said.

Davis also announced Disney Plus’s “next big musical event,” Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, with Dave Letterman, debuting March 17. The special, which sees Letterman in Dublin with the U2 members, explores the “friendship and creative partnership” between the musicians.

“Recently, I won a radio contest,” said Letterman. “Winner gets to visit Dublin with Bono and The Edge (radio contest part not true, but I feel like a winner). They showed me around, introduced me to their musician friends, and performed some of their greatest songs in a small theater. It’s a great tour. Get in touch with them ― I’m told there are still availabilities. I’m the luckiest man on the planet. (There are no availabilities).”

Morgan Neville directs. From Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Documentaries, Neville’s Tremolo Productions, and Letterman’s Worldwide Pants, Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, with Dave Letterman is part concert movie and part travel adventure, with lots of Bono, Edge and Letterman.

Disney also announced it has ordered second seasons for Firebuds, Superkitties and Pupstruction on Disney Junior. Firebuds debuted in September. Superkitties started this week. Pupstruction debuts this summer. ■

Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe premieres on Disney Plus Aug. 28. The movie sees the stepbrothers set out across the galaxy to rescue sister Candace, who has been abducted by aliens.

Animated series Phineas and Ferb ran on Disney Channel until 2015, amassing 222 episodes across four seasons. The New York Times called it “a semiprecious gem of a Disney series about two STEM-adept stepbrothers and the teenage sister.”

Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh created and executive produced the series, and are behind the movie too. “We had to think--we’d done 200 episodes, what have we not done?” Povenmire told B+C. “Most have been about the boys building something. We never really put anybody in jeopardy. But Candace being abducted by aliens and the boys going to rescue her--we never really told that kind of story.”

Povenmire called Phineas and Ferb “a super-positive show,” suggesting that an upbeat movie starring the boys will go over well in this troubling year.

He said he “wouldn’t say no” to more Phineas and Ferb. Added Marsh, “I’m happy to have that discussion.”

Dead Pixels starts on The CW Aug. 18. It’s about Meg and Nicky, who are obsessed with an online fantasy game, Kingdom Scrolls, which at times gets in the way of their actual lives.

The show is created by Jon Brown and has Jesse Armstrong as an executive producer. Both are on the HBO smash Succession.

Brown called Kingdom Scrolls “maybe the third-best role-playing game around,” as gamers move on to more state-of-the-art stuff like Warcraft.

“There’s something that quite appealed to me about people that have an attachment to a world and are not quite ready to let it go,” he said.

Brown delved into a concept called sunk cost fallacy, which pertains to the tons of hours, and cash, that gamers may have invested in a game, which makes quitting it that much more difficult. “That’s something a lot of people can relate to, whether it’s a relationship or a job,” he said.

Dead Pixels has aired in the U.K. on E4. Brown said a summer 2020 release in the U.S. makes the series “accidentally timely.”

“In a way, it couldn’t be any more perfect,” he said. “We’re all living the lives of the characters — stuck inside, connected through virtual worlds.”

Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe premieres August 28 on Disney Plus. The animated series, about step brothers who take on grandiose projects, ran for four seasons on Disney Channel before wrapping in 2015. It is back with a movie.

The movie sees Phineas and Ferb set out across the galaxy to rescue sister Candace, who has been abducted by aliens.

The main characters weren’t jerks or idiots, which all the shows were when we were making Phineas and Ferb. That’s what’s needed right now.”

Might there be more Phineas and Ferb? “I wouldn’t say no to it,” said Povenmire.

Added Swampy, “I’m happy to have that discussion.”

Disney Plus Releases Video Trailer for New 'Phineas and Ferb' Movie

Disney Plus Wednesday dropped a promo trailer for its original movie, Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe, which premieres Aug. 28.

The movie, based on the Phineas and Ferb animated series, which ran on Disney Channel from 2007-2015, follows stepbrothers Phineas and Ferb as they set out across the galaxy to rescue their older sister Candace, who was abducted by aliens, according to the streaming service.

Voice talent reprising their roles from the original series and movie include: Ashley Tisdale as Candace Flynn; Vincent Martella as Phineas Flynn; Caroline Rhea as their mom, Linda; Dee Bradley Baker as Perry the Platypus; Alyson Stoner as Isabella; Maulik Pancholy as Baljeet; Bobby Gaylor as Buford; Olivia Olson as Vanessa Doofenshmirtz; Tyler Mann as Carl; and Povenmire and Marsh as Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz and Major Monogram, respectively. David Errigo Jr. joins the cast as Ferb Fletcher.

‘Phineas and Ferb’ to End in June

Disney XD’s long-running series Phineas and Ferb will come to an end on Friday, June 12, at 9 p.m. The network will air a 73-hour hour marathon of the show leading up to the finale episode, “Last Day of Summer.”

The series capper, marking its 126th installment, will also be simulcast on the flagship Disney Channel.

But the finale won’t be the last Ferb fans see of fan favorite character Perry the Platypus. A standalone hour-long special titled The O.W.C.A. Files featuring the animal secret agent debuts in the fall.

Producers Dan Povenmire and Jeff "Swampy" Marsh are also scheduled to premiere a new Disney XD animated show, Mikey Murphy’s Law, in 2017. The cartoon will be about the great-great-great-great grandson of the Murphy's Law namesake.

“It's a coup for Disney XD to continue working with this talented duo on their latest creation, Mikey Murphy's Law’” said Marc Buhaj, senior vice president, programming and general manager, Disney XD. "We're looking forward to another great creative partnership."
