HBO has renewed its drama series Perry Mason for a second season, the network said Wednesday.

The series, a reimagining of the classic 1950s and 1960s CBS series of the same name starring Raymond Burr, debuted on HBO June 21. The first episode of the series has been seen by more than 8 million viewers, according to the network.

Perry Mason stars Mathhew Rhys as the iconic defense lawyer.

“It has been an exciting journey to work with the immensely talented team behind Perry Mason,” said HBO Programming EVP Francesca Orsi in a statement. “Viewers have relished being transported back in time to 1930’s Los Angeles each week, and we are thrilled to welcome the show back for a second season.”

Rhys plays Mason in the HBO series. 

Amanda Burrell, Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, Ron Fitzgerald, Joe Horacek, Rolin Jones and Timothy Van Patten are the executive producers. 

HBO will premiere its re imagining of the classic Perry Mason drama series while Showtime and AMC bring back two of its most popular series during the week heading into the official start of summer.

HBO’s Father’s Day (June 21) premiere of Perry Mason will resurrect the character made famous by actor Raymond Burr in the series that ran on CBS in the late fifties and early sixties. In the reboot, Mason is played by Matthew Rhys (The Americans) who, as a young private investigator, works on a child kidnapping case.

Series returning this week include the June 21 premieres of Showtime’s The Chi and AMC’s NOS4A2, as well as the June 17 second season debut of Netflix comedy series Mr. Iglesias.

Also in the cast for the HBO series are John Lithgow, Tatiana Maslany, Juliet Rylance, Chris Chalk, Shea Whigham, Stephen Root, Gayle Rankin, Nate Corddry and Veronica Falcon.

HBO has set a June 21 premiere date for its Perry Mason reboot, the network said Thursday.

The series, which follows the origins of the legendary criminal defense lawyer Perry Mason -- most famously played by Raymond Burr in the CBS series of the same name from 1957-1966 -- stars Matthew Rhys, John Lithgow and Tatiana Maslany, said the network.
