Netflix Inks Production Deal With Ryan Murphy

Prolific producer, director and writer Ryan Murphy is the latest big name talent to defect to Netflix from the television industry, signing an exclusive multi-year production deal with the streaming service.

The groundbreaking deal calls for Murphy, who has produced such Emmy Award-winning shows as FX's The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, Feud and American Horror Story – as well as breakout new Fox broadcasting series 9-1-1 – to produce new series and films exclusively at Netflix beginning July 1, according to the service.

Murphy’s move from traditional television and cable networks to the digital streaming service follows producer/creator Shonda Rhimes, who signed an exclusive deal with Netflix in August after producing such shows as Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder for broadcast network ABC.

Netflix is already slated to premiere two new Murphy-produced original series, Ratched and The Politician.

The deal comes two months after 20th Century Fox agreed to sell key content assets to the Walt Disney Co., including its movie and television production studios and cable networks FX, FXX and National Geographic. While Murphy's current FX and Fox shows will repotedly remain on their respective channels, his depature is a major loss for the company.

Murphy in a statement said: "The history of this moment is not lost on me. I am a gay kid from Indiana who moved to Hollywood in 1989 with $55 dollars in savings in my pocket, so the fact that my dreams have crystallized and come true in such a major way is emotional and overwhelming to me. I am awash in genuine appreciation for Ted Sarandos, Reed Hastings and Cindy Holland at Netflix for believing in me and the future of my company, which will continue to champion women, minorities and LGBTQ heroes and heroines, and I am honored and grateful to continue my partnership with my friends and peers at Fox on our existing shows."

HBO, FX Lead TCA Awards Noms

HBO and FX generated the most nominations for this year's TCA Awards, the Television Critics Association announced Wednesday.

HBO garnered 12 nominations and FX drew 11 to lead a list five broadcast networks, 12 cable networks and streaming service Netflix nominated for 2016 TCA Awards.

USA Network’s thriller Mr. Robot and FX’s limited series The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story earned four TCA Awards nods each to lead numerous cable and broadcast shows nominated in a variety of categories including News and Information, Youth, Reality, Drama and Comedy, said the TCA.

Winners of the TCA Awards will be announced Aug. 6, during the TCA Summer Press Tour, at a ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Jane The Virgin star Jaime Camil will host the event, according to TCA officials.

FX to Air 'O.J. Simpson' Episodes Commercial Free

In the wake of potential new evidence in the 20-year old O.J. Simpson murder case, FX tomorrow will run the first five episodes of it’s the People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story series commercial free, said network officials.

FX will begin its March 5 marathon of the series, which chronicles the infamous 1995 Simpson murder trial, at 10 p.m. and will run it without commercial interruption, said network officials. The programming decision comes as theLos Angeles Police Department. announced Friday that it is testing for DNA evidence a knife allegedly found at Simpson’s home years ago tha was recently turned in by a retired police officer.

The weapon used to kill Simpson’s ex-wife Nicole Simpson and friend Ronald Goldman was never recovered.

The 10-part limited series stars Cuba Gooding Jr. as O.J. Simpson, John Travolta as Robert Shapiro and Courtney B. Vance as Johnnie Cochran.

'O.J. Simpson' Series Sets FX Ratings Record

FX's The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story set a network ratings record for a series premiere in Live+3 Nielsen ratings, according to network officials.

The Feb. 2 premiere episode of the series, based on the book The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson by Jeffrey Toobin, drew 8.3 million viewers, besting the previous recored of 4.8 million viewers set by The Shield and Justified, according to network officials. The episode drew 5.1 million viewers in Nielsen Live+same day ratings.

The 10-episode limited series, which stars Cuba Gooding Jr. as O.J. Simpson, also set a network record among adults 18-49, averaging 4.2 million viewers within the demo. With added replays, the episode drew a total of 12 million viewers.
